Chapter 392: It could have been her

The arena was filled with spectators who came to see the fall of a noble family. Ivana was on the ground, stones still falling on her. She could not move. When it got too much the soldier warned the people to stop.

She was tugged, pulling her up, her chain dragged, pulling her to the pole. Ivana’s death was one of the most gruesome at this time. To be burnt alive, it was chosen by the council under Lucian’s control. It was a punishment kept for witches and those who committed very shameful acts.

The entire royal family was present to watch. Abrielle sat calmly on her seat, her eyes watching the duchess. She has complex emotions watching Ivana and her heart squeezed but she didn’t understand why

A thought crossed her mind it could be her facing this death. "Being burnt to death must be painful," Evelyn mentioned.

Abrielle didn’t say a thing, her fate if Cedric hadn’t unexpectedly fallen for her would not be so different. Abrielle was to be beheaded by Cedric in a public execution after which her body was completely burnt.

The entire time Cedric watched, he didn’t flinch but watched to make sure the obsessed wife who troubled his beloved was dead.

No public speeches were made, Ivana was dragged to the post, her body bound to the pole surrounded by hay. Even close to death Ivana still had her proud look.

"You don’t have to watch if you can’t." She said, glancing to my side, Fiona was seated. Her face was pale. Abrielle wondered if she still had some form of affection for the woman who never regarded her

"No, I am fine." She lied, her eyes watching Ivana, who was in a very pitiful state. Her body was covered in bruises, wearing a white dress stained with her own blood and dirt.

After Ivana was tied securely, the executioner walked steadily like the god of death. A torch was in his hand, his face covered to prevent the victim from seeing her killer before passing to the afterlife.

Abrielle’s breath slowed, and the execution stood. It seemed like he had a conversation with Ivana that only made her mad as she spat at him. The execution glanced in Lucian’s direction waiting for the approval.

Lucian gave the sign and the torch was dropped. Instantly lighting up the hay in a burst of flames. Ivana’s scream rang, agony thick in her voice.

The flame blasted high, the executioner muttered a spell, runes circled the flames, and it intensified, turning blue, engulfing Ivana completely. Ivana’s scream grew louder and louder. It was too agonising to watch.

Fiona could not stand it, so she covered her nose with a handkerchief. "Please excuse me, I need to get some fresh air." She bowed then left. Abrielle’s eyes followed her until her back disappeared.

The princess wondered if the duchess was plagued by guilt over what happened.

Many others could not watch till the end and started to leave one by one. Abrielle sat there, watching until Ivana’s screams died off, until the flames died off, burning everything at the spot.

The flames were enforced by magic so Ivana was burnt to dust on the spot. Her ashes mixed with the hay ashes.

It was over. Abrielle wasn’t the only one who watched to the end. Callista, who was seated not too far from the princess, watched the entire thing. Abrielle wondered what was going through her mind.

"Let’s leave," Abrielle instructed Evelyn. She got on her feet and made her way away from the seat. In the long passage to the outside Abrielle was forced to stop when she heard footsteps running after her.

"Your highness," she heard Callista’s voice, causing her to glance behind her. Callista crouched as soon as she was close enough, bowing her head. "Greetings your highness." She said humbly.

"How may I help you, Your Holiness?" Abrielle asked patiently, her hands crossed in front of her. Abrielle didn’t know what exactly it was. Maybe it was because she was the villainess, and there was a misunderstanding between Cedric and her. She never liked Callista even when she tried to

Callista always puts her on the edge. "I am sorry to bother you but I want to inquire if you have heard anything from Cedric," Callista asked, Abrielle’s gaze was calm

"Nothing worth mentioning but he is well." She answered. Callista slowly raised her head. "I am glad to hear that. I pray they end the war soon, now that the rebellion has been discovered." Callista said then bowed again before walking away.

Abrielle didn’t say anything and continued on her part. She made her way from the tunnel at the exit she walked past Sapphire. No words were said, just a quiet exchange.

"Be careful who you trust. At least protect yourself if you want to help Cedric." Sapphire mentioned from behind her before walking away. A foreign princess. Abrielle’s brows furrowed but she didn’t stop moving until she got to her carriage

She sat down and the wheels started to roll on the stone road. "What was the meaning of that?" She asked, Evelyn who was beside her signed

"Princess Sapphire is a foreign diplomat, she might have access to information we don’t have access to," Evelyn explained. Abrielle nodded subtly understanding what Evelyn meant.

Was there any other thing she should be wary of? The war will soon be over and Cedric will be back. As long as Kaiden doesn’t die soon everything will be fine.

"I am tired," Abrielle said

On another carriage a bit far from the entrance, a pair of deep blue eyes close to purple watched the exchange between Abrielle and Sapphire.

"You seem to have caught an interest in the prince’s consort." A voice said beside the man who watched quietly

"She is interesting." The man answered. He was the diplomat and the stranger who helped Abrielle during the attempted assassination at the ball.

"Do you plan on delaying your return home because of her? We are not certain and it can just be a coincidence." The aide said. The man sighed then glanced away.

"Her eyes remind me of her but it might still be a coincidence. We will return home soon. Darconia is about to face internal strife." The stranger said, his eyes sharp and calm.

It all depends on fate.
