Chapter 271: Not his fault

An unusual silence broke between both of them. Abrielle could sense that Sebastian had something to say on his mind, but he was restraining himself from speaking.

The music was still playing in the background while she admired the moon that would be full in a few days from now.

"Is Cedric the problem ?" Sebastian finally asked, breaking the silence. Abrielle sighed then shook her head. It was hard to say the problem here was Cedric. Honestly, despite being a horrible person as she described in the novel and being destined to kill her, he has not done anything except act the way she wrote him.

"Things have been tense between you two. Your mother didn’t seem to believe my claims of him being a nice person. At least, that’s what she tells my mother." Sebastian answered, he was genuinely curious about the roses in Abrielle’s possession. He could not ask because she did not seem comfortable about that.

"Mother doesn’t like a lot of people and Cedric is among them. There isn’t much to think about honestly." Abrielle shrugged off not wanting to dwell on the topic too much. Despite her expression being calm her mind was in chaos. She has roughly 2 days left.

"That sounds like Aunt Rebecca. The only person she didn’t seem to hate was Adeline’s husband. At least he was good enough to be an in-law of the Nightshades." Sebastian chuckled; Abrielle had a wary smile, knowing the reason Rebecca sang praises of the foreign prince was to convince Ava to marry off Adeline in Abrielle’s place.

At that point the only good match Rebecca could think for her daughter was Lucian. This was funny because Abrielle didn’t want to imagine how messed up her life would have been if she had been married to the male lead.

Her faith might have been worse; Lucian was going to hate her, that was for sure.

"I don’t even know what the problem is. I want to ask a question. Not related to me just out of curiosity." Abrielle asked Sebastian, who sat quietly by her side. Sebastian’s blue eyes narrowed at Abrielle. He was certain what she wanted to ask was very much related to her.

"Ask away," he chimed.

Abrielle’s gaze drew to Sebastian, hesitation was lingering in the corner of her eyes. Her hand slowly twirls the roses whose thorns have been cleared.

"Have you heard any recent rumours from the court related to the queen?" She asked; currently, Abrielle was faced with a serious problem; she did not have much information or rather none from what was happening in the court and tried to rely on her knowledge from the novel, but that wasn’t enough.

Sebastian’s gaze dulled, and he was thrown into deep thoughts. The light wind blew across carrying the scent of blooms and wet soil, the sound of the running water echoing.

"I did hear something but I am not sure about it because the source isn’t verified. This is something that I haven’t mentioned to anyone because it didn’t seem important but yet it lurked at the back of my mind."

Abrielle’s breath still her gaze expectantly waiting for whatever he wanted to say. "I don’t know if you know a lady, Scarlett; her mother serves under the queen as a lady in waiting. Yesterday at the banquet, I was conversing with Scarlett because she seemed interested, but she was also wasted at a point. She started saying random things like the queen plans on framing someone, and the next meeting in the court after the festival, Queen Eleanor will issue the order to kill the person."

Abrielle’s expression did not crack but she felt like screaming. Eleanor was indeed going with the plan of framing her. "It is completely unrelated and Scarlett was wasted. She was babbling about this as I helped her to her carriage."

"That is indeed random. I guess we will be expecting some royal drama soon." Abrielle nonchalantly chimed like this was completely unrelated to her.

"The court is always filled with drama but I won’t be there to witness it. I have to travel to Vesper immediately after the festival is over. There is a lot I have to get my head around concerning this succession."

"I hope you do have a safe journey then." Abrielle wished him honestly. Sebastian nodded at her.

"Maybe you should consider taking on official duties as the prince’s wife. That way, you will be in touch with the court." It was a good suggestion but Abrielle was not interested in that. She didn’t have the time all she needed was to survive.

******

Back in the hall, this was the first night Cedric had actually joined the banquet. He had to part with Callista as soon as they appeared at the entrance.

She was quickly swept away by Lucian who seemed to have been waiting for her. They seemed rather in love, and the Priestess had mentioned her admiration at times for Lucian, but Cedric never understood while she spoke about it to him.

He didn’t care about their love life; he already had a lot on his plate, and now more was piled into his plate thanks to the voice that was getting out of hand.

He was a bit nervous earlier about how he was going to explain why he went missing with Callista, but he did not expect what happened earlier to happen.

And now Abrielle was too nervous to come to the banquet hall. She still lingers in the garden. His hold tightened on his glass.

"Your Highness," Cedric heard a female voice call, drawing his attention from his straying thoughts. It was Aurora, one of Cedric’s pawns.

His gaze fell on the lady who bowed slightly, her eyes hinting they should get to a private place to talk. Aurora walked off first with her glass making their greetings seem casual.

A few minutes later, in a quiet hallway far from the banquet hall, soft footsteps approached a slender figure that waited in a dark spot.

"Welcome, your Highness; I am sorry to have called you on short notice." Aurora politely said as she waited for Cedric to get closer. The prince didn’t say a word; he was a man of few words, as she knew.

She swallowed then went ahead to speak. "What you requested I investigated is true? The royal family does have ties with the sorcerers but the other I found no result."
