Chapter 270: She is the true villain
Chapter 270: She is the true villain
The moon hung high above the palace gardens, casting a silver glow over the neatly trimmed hedges and marble pathways. The soft fabric of her evening gown fluttered in the cool night breeze.
The scent of roses and damp earth filled her senses, grounding her despite the unease creeping up her spine. She had come here under the pretence of needing fresh air, but she had known Alfonso would follow. Here she stood. He gave her an offer that wasn’t as hard as the task before her, but by the system, it was going to be problematic.
She was thrown into deep thoughts and there he was, her brother-in-law, standing before her with that ever-present, unreadable smirk.
He was the dark present that haunted her. His hazel eyes keenly studied her waiting for her reply. Alfonso, in dark formal attire, looked every bit the noble prince, but something was unsettling in his gaze tonight. Something that made her pulse quicken, though whether it was from unease or fear. It might be both.
In the corner of her mind, he intimidated her like Cedric. They weren’t that different. "I will give you an answer later. It depends on if I can get Cedric not to go with me." Abrielle finally spoke. It wasn’t a finite agreement, but he could work with it.
Alfonso’s smile didn’t change, but there was something triumphant in his eyes. He reached into his coat and pulled out two red roses. Abrielle immediately recognized it from the rose duel
Her breath hitched, recognizing the ever-bright petal enchanted by magic. "A seal of our agreement," he said smoothly, offering it to her.
"You don’t have to," she said, her fist still balled. "But I want to; the petals never fade. It will be a quiet reminder of our agreement." He insisted.
"If you don’t accept, the deal is off," Alfonso added. It was a silent threat. Her smile went stiff. He was still playing the dangerous game
Abrielle hesitated before taking it, the petals soft against her fingers. It felt heavier than a simple flower should.
"Good girl," Alfonso leaned forward to whisper close to her ears. The breeze blew across, ruffling her hair; he backed away, trying to fix the mess, her face turning away from the direction of the breeze.
Her gaze fell on the opposite entrance, different from the one she took to the garden. This one led to another part of the castle as the garden stood in a quadrangle. Her breath still, time seemed to have stopped for a second. "That’s a grand entry." Alfonso nonchalantly chimed, amusement written in his voice.
"Have fun, till when we meet again." He added then he stepped back, leaving her standing alone beneath the wisteria as the music from the banquet hall played on.
Abrielle could not pull her eyes away from the point she stared at neither could she move a step. Their eyes were locked for a brief moment but Cedric quickly averted like he hadn’t seen a thing.
He whispered something into Callista’s ears that was beside him, and they took a different path, avoiding Abrielle to the banquet hall. She watched them leave until he disappeared through the hall entrance.
Her eyes trailed to Callista; the priestess had fleeting emotions running through her eyes. Was it contempt or something else? Abrielle didn’t know.
Those were the longest minutes of her life. As soon as he was gone she finally released the breath that was caught in her Throat. Her hands tightened around the roses in her hold.
"When did he get there?" She asked herself, laughing out loud. This was crazy. Her laugh was far from bliss, with tiredness and exhaustion lingering in it. He saw her accept the rose. How long was he staring? She bet she and Alfonso look very intimate at that moment. This was just perfect.
"Abrielle, that’s enough for one night." She said again, she didn’t want to go back to the banquet. She remembered when their eyes met, his gaze was blank and unreadable. He was good at masking his thoughts behind that mask.
Or he wasn’t affected by the sight of his wife secretly meeting her lover to accept roses from him. Abrielle walked towards the fountain, her legs were getting tired. There was no justification anymore, She was a horrible person trapped in an unending web of lies.
She sat at the edge, her hands reaching out for the water surface. She was tempted to drop the roses here. "I can’t do that, he will know. That means more trouble." She continued talking to herself like she lost her nuts.
"The rose is innocent. Cedric isn’t so innocent." She sneered, she stirred the water; her reflection on the surface rippled and distorted under the moonlight.
She was getting used to this appearance. She was scared that she might forget the girl with auburn hair and dark obsidian hair. That is, if she lives long enough, her old self might be a distant echo.
"He goes missing the entire day and appears with Callista. I might not be the only one with an affair yet I am the villain." Abrielle scoffed, turning away from the water for a second. It seemed like Hazel was staring back at her.
She didn’t care about Cedric; she wasn’t jealous, not that she had the right to. She kept on repeating in her mind. "But where was he?" She asked herself an answer she didn’t have.
"Maybe you should ask him instead of soliloquizing." She heard a baritone voice chiming. Startled, her eyes snapped to him, surprised to see Sebastian. Why were the men in this world always sneaking up on her?
"Sebastian," she gasped.
He smiled at her, taking steady steps. "May I?" He requested to sit beside her. She nervously nodded. Sebastian was dressed in royal blue which made his silver hair stand out. "You look rather disturbed." He stated the obvious: his voice was steady.
"I am just tired," she answered, Sebastian’s gaze was not on her. He was staring at the fountain trying to see what made her lost in it. "I guess the roses have something to do. From my guess, they are not from Cedric."
A weak smile graced her lips. "I don’t want to talk about that, Sebastian. I just want to admire this lovely view under the moonlight. It is not much to ask for."
