Chapter 253: The Wanderer
Chapter 253: The Wanderer
Abrielle stared blankly at the red rose; she slowly realized that he had never given it to Callista. Why did it give her a strange sense of solace?
*****
The second day of the rose duel was a one-on-one duel between the contenders and ghouls. They were more dangerous than the monster arranged for the first event
Ghouls were ghosts who refused to pass on and ended up turning into bloodthirsty monsters that survived on terror and destruction.
The goal was to defeat the ghoul within the stipulated time to prevent casualties. If a participant was unable to finish off his match within the stipulated time, the match would be forced to stop and assistance would be given to defeat the ghoul immediately.
The rules were simple, it was a battle of survival.
The arena was alive with deafening cheers, the energy of the crowd lifted the atmosphere. Nobles and commoners both roared in excitement, their voices blending into an overwhelming wave of sound. Status didn’t matter here.
Trumpets blared, flags bearing the royal crest and several important families of the kingdom fluttered in the wind, and petals rained from above, thrown by enthusiastic spectators along with several roses. The scent of sweat, earth, and blood lingered in the air, mixing with the crisp freshness of spring.
On the battlefield, a knight stood victorious, his sword still gleaming with the remnants of his slain opponent, a ghoul that had met its end without so much as a struggle.
He has a rose in between his lips, his award for winning the death-threatening duel. He had fought with precision, skill, and unwavering focus, ending the battle in a matter of moments. The crowd loved it, chanting his name, praising his prowess. It was one of the most mind-blowing battles.
"Hail the dragon!!!"
"Hail the dragon!!!"
"Hail the dragon!!!"
They continued cheering excitedly; the ladies’ hearts were beating wildly seeing such an excellent performance.
At the edge of the arena, waiting for his turn, Cedric remained unmoved. He was the next and just wanted this to be over as soon as possible.
He only did this out of duty, Kaiden had demanded all the princes participate. Seated atop his black stallion at midnight, Cedric watched with cool indifference as the knight rode towards the exit. The remains of the ghoul slowly turn into ashes leaving nothing of its existence.
As the knight approached the exit, Cedric’s gaze met his. He knew that Cedric was the next knight. That cold indifference ticked him off.
Alfonso’s hazel eyes dulled, and his brown stallion grunted at the sight of Cedric.
The youngest of the royal brothers, the one who had always been overlooked and overshadowed by his brothers, until rumours began circling about his involvement with Abrielle. Neither of them spoke, but the weight of unspoken words hung between them. A silent understanding, a challenge either voiced aloud.
Finally, Alfonso broke the silence, his voice as casual as ever. "Abrielle is missing. I could not help but notice that she was absent."
Cedric’s grip on the reins tightened slightly, but his expression remained unreadable. "That is none of your concern," he replied flatly.
Alfonso smirked but said nothing more. He pulled his reins riding off, leaving a trail of dust behind him. Alfonso’s gaze flickered to Cedric’s arm.
An embroidered handkerchief, neatly tied around his wrist. The rough, delicate threadwork is unmistakable. Abrielle’s work. Only the princess could make just mediocre hand work and Cedric would proudly wear it.
A bitter feeling twisted in Alfonso’s chest, but he swallowed it down. Without another word, he rode off, disappearing into the crowd.
Cedric, unfazed, turned his attention back to the arena. It was finally time. He sighed and then urged his horse to ride forward.
The gates creaked open, and he urged his stallion forward, stepping onto the battlefield. The cheers grew louder as the announcer called his name, his title echoing across the arena. It was time to see the bloodlust demon in the Battlefield.
A part of Cedric wanted Abrielle here, but he still preferred her being away from the chaos and away from Alfonso. Until he could figure out what was the deal between his wife and Alfonso.
The opposite gates open, and a low-level ghoul emerges, baring its teeth at Cedric. A strong wind hit Cedric startling his horse. "Steady boy," he tried to control the horse that was shaken by the ghoul. It was a bit stronger than what he expected, but nothing compared to the chaos he had defeated.
"This will be over in no time," Cedric said, trying to steady his horse. He pulled out a blade that glittered under the sunlight. The ghoul roared again ready to attack.
Suddenly, an unnatural chill swept through the arena, silencing the crowd in an instant.
The air turned thick and heavy with something ominous threatening even the ghoul. A very dark aura filled the air and the sky darkened with heavy clouds.
The ghoul screamed; Cedric’s eyes flickered between black and gold, and his body sensed it. Then something sinister materialized, devouring the ghoul in a second like it was nothing.
Then the size doubled; it was a high-ranking ghoul a few grades below the khaos. This creature was different. Larger, its decayed body radiates an eerie, malevolent energy. Its eyes burned an unnatural crimson, filled with hunger and fury. This was no mere combat ghoul. This was a beast that had no place in a festival match.
A wanderer, some call it. Evil ghouls that hunt its kind and destroy everything in its part wherever it was SUMMONED. Cedric smiled, it was another assassination attempt.
Gasps rippled through the stands, murmurs of confusion and fear spreading like wildfire.
Cedric remained still, his sharp eyes locked onto the monster before him. He wasn’t scared in the least way. No matter what they send he would defeat it. His smile widened with an evil smirk. Unfortunately, he couldn’t use the majority of his magic here, but he was going to end this by hand.
Kaiden, who was seated, jolted from his seat. "Send help immediately," he barked, sensing the danger in Cedric’s life.
Someone had sent this creature here. Someone had done this on purpose.
And as the ghoul let out a bone-chilling screech and charged forward, Cedric prepared himself, because this was no duel but an actual fight for survival.
