Chapter 193: An aggrieved wife

Abrielle was surprised, it was so obvious she couldn’t hide it. He did send a letter. A sad smile graced her lips wondering why the hell Cedric would send her a letter.

"He must have been busy, I am sure he is fine." Abrielle shrugged, picking up her spoon to scoop some soup. She took a sip that tasted bland in her mouth. Her tongue suddenly lost its sense of taste.

"Too busy to send a letter to his wife. I guess he thought you would not care less." Alfonso drew, he could sense it despite how Abrielle hid it.

She dropped her spoon, her face going stoic. "I would appreciate it if you keep your nose out of my marriage. I understand my husband more than you do. Cedric didn’t want me to worry much knowing about my health by telling me about how difficult his journey was." She firmly said; her voice was domineering, and it took Alfonso unaware.

She tried to act natural but her actions spelt one thing to him. A wife was furious at her dear husband. She was expecting a letter from Cedric but he didn’t bother writing one.

"I will take your words but my eyes see something different."

This was getting more annoying, he was here to piss her off. "Your eyes must be blind." Abrielle retorted at him.

Alfonso chuckled, her hand froze mid-way at scooping her soup. She glanced at him, confused about what made him so amused. His hazel eyes glimmered as his laughed. He was truly having the time of his life getting on her nerves.

"I had no idea my face was hilarious Prince Alfonso." She clicked her tongue in distaste. Alfonso was not hungry in any way. He came here to confirm something.

Cedric didn’t send a letter to Abrielle and it did tick him off at how insensitive that bastard can be. Abrielle was expecting a letter too. "Your face is amusing. You have an expressive one that can easily be read."

"You do admit my face is amusing." She clicked her tongue. Alfonso pursed his lips. "I am not Cedric. If you are mad at him feel free to send him a letter expressing your grievances." Alfonso sneered at her.

He gets more annoying the more he speaks. She could not chase him out the door because he had information that could lead to her death. She had no choice but to entertain him tonight.

She did wish for company at times but not this kind of company. "I can see you intend to make this meal as unpalatable as ever for me, dear brother-in-law." Abrielle sneered and was barely able to enjoy her first course. If not for her appetite being pretty good tonight she would have skipped this one out.

"That’s unfortunate, I do enjoy this meal better than most. Just sharing it with a beautiful lady." Alfonso complimented; for the first time, she didn’t like to be called beautiful.

"Maybe you should have dinner with your mother, I am sure she would be more than happy to chat with her only child." Abrielle kindly suggested to Alfonso.

"That is a good suggestion but I prefer having it with you."

"I thought your mother was the most beautiful woman ever, yet you chose a stranger over her. That is uncalled for you Alfonso." The main meal was rabbit-based. Nothing beats the tender bite of rabbit meat. Which Abrielle was trying to enjoy.

She missed Cedric. At least he wasn’t a chatterbox, although he started acting like a chatterbox recently. She had concluded that everyone wanted to get on her nerves.

"Don’t put words into my mouth Abrielle. I never said my mother is not beautiful. Just tired of her endless nagging. I am sure you relate as an only child."

Abrielle’s lips curved into a smile as distant memories of how Abrielle was treated as a child. Rebecca loved her to spoil; it was truly a shame such an excellent lady had horrible taste in men to choose Cedric as her groom.

"You should value your mother at least she isn’t miles away like mine." Her words had a deeper meaning.

In the original plot, after Alfonso was killed by a nobleman for having an affair with his wife, Lady Karissa passed on shortly, unable to live with the grief of losing her only child which she has been going against Eleanor for years.

Her death was a good thing for the plot, as Karissa was a minor antagonist in the story. "Do you miss your parents?" Alfonso suddenly asked. Abrielle was a bit puzzled by his question, she wasn’t expecting it.

"It has been months. I guess I miss them, but we exchange letters regularly." It was an honest answer. There was no need to lie.

"You should have travelled back home with Cedric. I am sure they would have loved a surprise visit." Alfonso’s words did sound sincere, but it wasn’t worth being stuck with Cedric for weeks. Maybe they did need a bit of distance to get their acts together.

It was getting hard to be in the same space as Cedric. "The journey was too long for my health to keep up." She answered, and besides, there was no need to go when they were coming to Vitalis for the spring festival.

"You are indeed a brave woman to let your husband spend so much time with another woman." Alfonso chirped in, Abrielle was not offended. Okay, there was a slightly bitter feeling, but why should she care?

"I trust Cedric; I can’t always be around. After all, he spends a lot of time with Callista during their investigation." Alfonso was watching her. He had been with a lot of women and one thing he knew was how to read women.

"It sounds more like you are trying to convince yourself. Callista loves Lucian, but Sapphire seems like someone who likes Cedric. After all, she did go to lengths to spread rumours about your miscarriage and convinced her brother to let her be in charge of the import agreement." Alfonso paused. His hazel eyes were still observing Abrielle.

One thing for sure was that she was a good actress and it made it more interesting. "It is obvious she wants to get closer to Cedric."
