Chapter 188: An angry mother
Chapter 188: An angry mother
Things were rather peaceful without Cedric. At least Abrielle didn’t have to move on eggshells with him gone. She has been busy these days managing the household during the winter.
The job was more tasking than she had imagined. Cedric owned a couple of businesses that were profitable if Eleanor was not being a pain in the ass.
Abrielle did her best to stay positive, carrying her task and avoiding every invitation to the castle with the excuse she was recovering due to her miscarriage health issues
The miscarriage ended up being more advantageous than she had imagined it to be. It helped her get out of a lot of sticky situations.
That aside, she had also been improving her spells. It turned out Zoltana was able to get a book, more like steal a book about Heliosian magic from the temple that detailed some training spells which she had been using to teach the princess, and they have been making steady progress.
There was a light knock on the door, drawing Abrielle’s attention from the paperwork she was handling. It was regarding some fabrics she had ordered to improve the clothing store’s collection.
"The door is open," she answered, dropping the quill pen in the ink bottle while her attention was drawn to the door. The door was pushed open and Jubilee stepped in.
"Good afternoon, your Highness; I am sorry to interrupt, but there is a letter from Vesper," Jubilee informed Abrielle. The princess’s eyes immediately sparkled thinking it was a letter from Cedric. But it was a bit early. Did he rush the trip to arrive at Vesper?
Abrielle was confused, it would take at least a month for Cedric to arrive at Vesper and his letter back to her. Regardless, she still accepted the letter, and Jubilee stood by her side.
Abrielle’s smile went stiff immediately when she saw the stamp was the Nightshade family stamp. It was a letter from her parents. She was a bit hesitant to open the letter.
She broke the wax seal and brought out the folded handwritten letter. Dear Mrs Rebecca Nightshade had taken her time to write to her, as she had expected, Sebastian had sent word to her parents about her affairs.
The more Abrielle read the letter the brighter her smile. It was pretty heartwarming, and she would describe it as a mother’s hard love.
~~~~~~~
To My Most Stubborn Daughter,
Abrielle, or should I say princess Abrielle because ever since you got married to that boy, you seem to have forgotten you are Abrielle Nightshade. The holy daughter of the Nightshade family who has parents who care about her because how could you not tell me?
How could you suffer something so terrible and keep it from me, your own mother? Did you think I wouldn’t find out? That the whispers of the court wouldn’t reach me? You lost a child and didn’t even know you were carrying one? I can barely hold this quill with how furious I am. Furious and heartbroken.
How can a grown-up woman of 20 years old not know she was pregnant when girls your age have already given their mother a grandchild or two?
I wanted to storm to your side the moment I heard. I still want to. If not for your father, I would have already torn through the palace doors demanding answers. Pierre was the only thing that calmed me. He reminded me that you have suffered enough that you are likely blaming yourself when you should not. Your father is a wise man so I listened this time around.
He reminded you you were already bearing the weight of those wretched rumours, whispers of curses and ill omens because it happened on the holy mountain of Lunarias. Superstitious fools, a daughter of the holy family can never be cursed even if your husband might be but that’s not the topic.
You are so bright even Cedric can’t hold you back; no girl is more perfect than the Abrielle I carried for 10 long months. Those annoying wives whose husbands have a couple of secret mistresses are just being hateful.
Do not let their words reach you, Abrielle. You are not cursed. You are my daughter, the only one I ever carried to full term after years of heartbreak and praying for a blessing. You are stronger than this. I will not have you wilting because of cruel tongues.
Sebastian told me everything. Yes, Sebastian, because you refused to write to me yourself. And would you believe what he had the nerve to say? That your husband is not as wretched as we all thought.
I will be the judge of that myself when I arrive, and yes, I am coming earlier than planned. I will be there to give you an earful of scolding once the icy roads melt, and it will be safer for us to travel. Your father will also be travelling earlier. He is just as worried as I am, though he hides it behind his calm words.
Your husband is to visit our home, so we shall all travel together. Do not argue. I will not allow you to waste away in sorrow while those petty noble wives dare to speak against you. When I arrive in Vatalis, I swear upon my name, I will make them regret ever uttering your name in scorn.
Expect me within a few weeks. And next time, you will write to your mother. Do you understand me? If not, I will have to educate you on valuing your parents, who think day in and out of their rebellious daughter who wanted to marry the annoying first prince.
With all my love (and my rage),
Your Mother, Rebecca Nightshade.
The letter made her day; it would not be bad to spend a few days with her parents before she disappeared from their lives. She was busy missing her first family, forgetting the new family she was granted.
Abrielle chuckled and then brought out another piece of paper to write back before Rebecca sent another letter, fuming about her not replying to the letter.
