Chapter 170: They are back
Abrielle’s brows furrowed, wondering what else there could be. "Another reason," she mumbled.
The fire was crackling softly; they were the only ones in here, and it was dark already. Under normal conditions, it wasn’t an idea for a married lady to be in a place like this, but Sebastian was a priest, so it was considered an exception.
"Yes, although it was something I overheard hearing father and uncle talking about relating your birth and mother." Sebastian went on, Abrielle’s grip subconsciously tightened around her cup, wondering if Sebastian had any idea about the fact her magic was sealed at birth.
"Now you are making me scared," Abrielle blurted. Sebastian sighed. He was dressed in all white in his official clothes; Sebastian was rather handsome, owing to the good traits of the Nightshade family. Abrielle’s looks were mostly from her mother’s side, including her magic too.
Her parents must have been disappointed when they saw her red hair. "I don’t know how to put it but I think your miscarriage is tied to the reason you are the only child. Before you were born, your mother suffered a lot of miscarriages. That’s why, to your parents, you are their little treasure after multiple failed attempts."
"I also heard the story, that’s why Mum was a bit scared of losing me, knowing how difficult her pregnancy was," Abrielle answered, her heart squeezed a bit knowing of her fate. Rebecca would be devastated by Abrielle’s death if that were to happen.
"Yeah, I was thinking, what if you end up having the same problem, it is obvious to take more from aunt’s side of the family? Inability to have children will be a serious problem being married to the royal family," Sebastian explained honestly, concerned about Abrielle.
Abrielle knew that children were important to Cedric, but she didn’t plan on having any for him, and with the system, she might not have it either. She knew her miscarriage was a result of the system and not her mother’s condition.
"I know but it’s still early. I will pray about it."
A short sigh left Sebastian’s lips. "I will also pray to and hope your luck is better but I honestly don’t understand why you married him. The darkness that swirls around him is affecting you, too."
"I guess I never got over my crush after the day he saved us." Abrielle weakly laughed. Something flashed in Sebastian’s eyes, remembering that day. He was with Abrielle that fateful day they got attacked by bandits who wanted to kidnap them but the prince then showed up.
"You have no idea what you got yourself into but it is too late now." He answered her. Abrielle took another sip of the tea before replying. "If I can’t have children, Cedric can just have another wife. He can’t kill me because of our family ", she reminded Sebastian, hoping he would stop worrying.
"That is hard knowing how nasty the rumours are. They are even dragging Aunty Rebecca into it. They are just jealous, and it is annoying how Eleanor made you sit behind."
"A priest should not be angry at the queen, Sebastian. It is fine, I didn’t even like the idea of sitting with her." Abrielle chuckled amused at how annoyed Sebastian was. He was still Abrielle’s close friend; his father was the second son of the Nightshade Mikhail, the current high pope.
He was the next in line for the duke position, so he and Abrielle were raised together. The original plan was to marry her off to her cousin, securing her position as the duchess if she was unable to find a good husband, but Abrielle had her eyes on Cedric.
Even Sebastian never had romantic feelings for his cousin and saw her more as his younger sister but he wished she had gotten married to someone else.
"I am not speaking as a priest but as your big brother."
A sudden loud knock echoed from the other door drawing their attention. "Excuse me," Sebastian clicked his tongue, irritated by the interruption. He got on his feet to answer the door.
Abrielle waited for him to finish while she stared blankly at the fire. It was warm here and Sebastian was taking an oddly long time.
She heard him close the door drawing her attention to him. Sebastian looked a bit worried about something. "Is anything wrong?" She asked him.
His lips parted, hesitant to answer. "Not really, the search team just arrived. They found Princess Ophelia Along with a foreign prince. I don’t know exactly what happened, but Lady Marinette is furious." He explained,
Abrielle got up from her seat, which meant Cedric was back. "How is Cedric?" She asked instinctively.
"Your husband is fine but I can’t say the same for the priestess. I think her name is Callista. She and some members of the rescue team are severely injured." Sebastian answered. Abrielle was confused; Callista was hurt, but how?
"Where are they?" She said already heading for the door. Sebastian sighed and followed behind her.
Abrielle didn’t like Callista but she had a feeling something bad would happen if Callista got hurt. Would Cedric hate her for being the reason he wasn’t there to help Callista? Was Cedric also hurt?
Her footsteps were fast, her hands lifting her dress as she rushed to the main entrance to see the state of things.
Her feet stopped at the door when her eyes went wide. Soon confusion filled her face. There was a crowd at the entrance followed by loud clashing sounds.
"What is going on?" She asked Sebastian at her side. "I have no idea." He said equally confused. Abrielle squeezed through the crowd to get to the centre. As soon as she saw the scene unfold before her, her heartbeat sank.
Cedric was furious and smeared in blood; she knew it wasn’t his blood that was not the issue but the fact Cedric was fighting Alfonso, who was on the losing side.
She was confused about what was happening, but from the look of things, Callista was trying to stop Cedric, who looked like he could kill Alfonso at any moment.
"Tell him to take back what he said." Cedric barked at Alfonso who was on one knee struggling to get up. Callista, who was injured, was clinging to Cedric, begging him.
Where was Lucian? That was the question on Abrielle’s mind because he was the only one who stood a chance against Cedric.
Alfonso finally got back staggering, and he laughed. "I will never take it back. Why are you scared? You know I am right." Alfonso taunted. Abrielle was confused about what they were saying but Alfonso successfully instigated Cedric. He broke free from Callista and lunged towards Alfonso.
Abrielle panicked. "CEDRIC!!!" She screamed.
