Chapter 150: Chaos for power

Abrielle was flabbergasted because why would someone want to get married to Prince Cedric Von Drakkar? It seemed like something was wrong with her head.

Cedric chuckled, taking her words lightly, and it made her shut up. Sapphire bit back whatever words she wanted to say before. "It seems like you want Galvia to burn. Just because we were gracious enough to establish diplomatic relationships doesn’t mean we can do what we are best at."

It was a threat that sent chills down their spines. "Be mindful of your words," Ryker drawled, causing Cedric to smirk at him.

"I was never on the table for the negotiation. I have no intentions of taking another wife anytime soon, so Sapphire should be the one to be mindful, or we might see between my wrath and your strength which is greater." He spoke like a true tyrant, this peace banquet was so unappetizing the only one who still had an appetite was Abrielle.

Sapphire’s fingers curled into fists; his words were ruthless, and he could not care any less how they felt. "You sound like you want a war." Ryker sneered, not intimidated by Cedric. Ryker was a few years older than Cedric so he could not be intimidated by a younger one despite his murderous intent.

"Trust me that was what I suggested at first." Cedric’s eyes were sharp and intimidating. It wasn’t an empty threat.

"Sapphire is the daughter of the queen and can’t be a second wife," Ryker argued; he didn’t expect the Darconia royal family to go back on their word so easily.

"The first princess of Darconia born from the queen is married to a general, are you saying my daughter has little value compared to Sapphire." Eleanor was the one who spoke this time around, her words laced with anger. Ryker realized he had made an excuse.

"I didn’t mean that but it is a disappointment that Darconia is going back on their agreement." Abrielle was sipping some wine, her gaze trailing to Callista, who was very silent, barely touching her meal. She wasn’t the only one in that state.

"A marriage was agreed and you will get it. Since we can’t find a suitable match for Sapphire we are ready to offer Ophelia to the prince." Kaiden finally spoke, Ryker’s jaw clenched, his gaze trailing to Ophelia, the daughter of the king’s favourite wife.

Ophelia was beautiful and didn’t hold much value but a marriage to her would protect Galvia from a possible war and strengthen their relationship. Sapphire tugged Ryker’s shirt, drawing his attention. He nodded at her. "We will need to think about it and send word home," Ryker said. Eleanor released a long breath as the tension relaxed.

"In that case, let’s bury the hatchet and enjoy the feast," Kaiden announced. Eleanor signalled the maid, and the door was opened; dancers came filling the room to entertain the guests as the soft music started to play.

Although the atmosphere was a bit down under Eleanor’s guide, she was able to lift the room’s atmosphere, and the room became more comfortable. "I want to step out for a breather," Abrielle whispered into Cedric’s ear. She was bloated from stuffing herself and needed a walk.

"Do you want me to accompany you?" Cedric suggested tired of all the politics he had been talking about. He wasn’t a talker but the occasion demanded it of him.

"No need, you are needed more here." Abrielle refused his suggestion and then stood up, ignoring the curious gaze of Eleanor. Cedric sighed, his eyes following her back until she left the room.

The music faded as the doors closed; Abrielle released a tired breath, and the room was suffocating. She kept on feeling the sharp gaze of Astrid and, weirdly, Sapphire. Why was the princess of Galvia getting interested in Cedric in the first place?

Sapphire was a smart woman whose goal was to secure her future. Abrielle felt like laughing because she could read Sapphire’s mind. She thought that if Cedric had her support, he would be able to succeed to the throne.

It was so ridiculous that she was ready to throw her life into chaos for power. The hallways were quiet; Abrielle strayed until she found herself outside in one of the numerous gardens in the palace. The wind howled, and she shivered; she wasn’t wearing a coat and knew it was time to turn back.

Walking back, her ears seemed to have caught the sound of a whimper, her brows furrowed, confused about what was happening. She slowly walked towards the sounds of the whimpers; her eyes went wide, her hand covering her mouth before she made a sound that would lead to her being caught.

Squatting behind a bush, her eyes caught the sight of Callista crying. The tears kept on pouring, and she seemed to be talking to someone who Abrielle could not see clearly, but she was sure it was a woman.

Instinctively she knew this was somewhere she was not meant to be. Curiosity killed the cat; she carefully turned around, keeping her head low. As soon as she was through the door she bolted away.

Her eyes kept on glancing behind her hoping they didn’t catch her. The last thing she needed was to get involved in a new scheme.

She accidentally ran straight into someone she didn’t see coming, knocking her backwards. Luckily, the person quickly pulled her back before she fell.

A strong masculine scent rich in cinnamon is different from the sandalwood, vanilla mix Cedric had invaded her senses. "Are you alright?" She heard him ask. Her heart started to beat fast, her gaze slowly drawing to those similar yet different gold eyes. "Lucian," she muttered; she was still stunned at how much the male lead looked like her crush.

It was like she was in her Lucian arms as she envisioned but this felt wrong. "Did you see a monster or something?" He asked, staring back at her puzzled blue eyes. This was the woman his mother wanted him to marry if not for her obsession with Cedric.

Abrielle’s lips parted to answer him but was interrupted by a soft tone that seemed hurt. "Lucian,"

Abrielle glanced behind her to see Callista who looked broken. That was when she realized how intimate she seemed to be with Lucian.
