Chapter 131: Sneaking out
The dimly lit room was illuminated by the soft lights of the fireplace; the golden light shone, followed by the soft crackling sound of the fireplace. It was a moonless night.
The time was around 4 hours to midnight; Cedric hadn’t returned yet to the palace. Everything was perfect for them to leave. Abrielle had instructed her maids to prepare her early for bed to make things easier. When she was gone, everyone would think she was asleep.
Abrielle sat in front of the fireplace with Yuki on her lap as she slowly rubbed its fur; she was worried and anxious. Although tonight was perfect throughout the day, she hadn’t gotten any sign of Zoltana.
The door creaked open, drawing the princess’s attention; her eyes fell on the maid with foreign origins. Zoltana got into the room dressed in her regular maid outfits. "Your Highness, I am sorry I didn’t inform you earlier because I was flooded with tasks. We are going tonight." She said with a sense of urgency as she placed the bag in her hand on the floor and started pulling out clothes.
"Am I going to disguise myself as a maid?" Abrielle asked, seeing the maid outfit that Zoltana pulled out. It would not be her first time doing that but it brought some unpleasant memories.
"Just while on the castle grounds, as soon as we get into the carriage we will both Change just to be safe," Zoltana explained. Abrielle nodded, dropping the feline on her lap on the ground. Yuki stared curiously at its master, not blinking its eyes once as Abrielle changed out of its sleeping garment into the maid outfit.
To be extra cautious, they tied up her ginger hair because, coincidentally, the princess was the only female ginger in the castle. After they were done, the princess squatted to rub her cat’s head. "Make sure to stay quiet and behave while I am gone." She instructed the animal who might not even understand her intentions.
Yuki meowed at Abrielle, taking quiet steps. They walked towards the door, Zoltana led the way as she peeked through. "We are clear." She informed Abrielle after looking at the empty hallway.
Abrielle left the room behind her and was stunned to see a guard leaning against the wall she almost whimpered. Zoltana’s eyes warned her to hold it in. "He is just asleep."
"Did you cast a spell on them?" Abrielle asked, their soft footsteps echoed down the hallway.
"I drugged their meal. Hopefully, they don’t observe any amidst while we are gone," Zoltana answered, surprising the princess a bit. After leaving the princess’s quarters they made their way towards the maid quarters that had an exit from the castle.
Nobody found anything strange about them, and Abrielle acted very naturally. It made Zoltana suspicious that the princess had tried something like this before. She was not nervous or trembling.
They exited the building, and from a distance, they could hear guards patrolling the area. "Carriage is close by." Zoltana’s voice was barely a whisper. It was snowing tonight and the weather was a bit cold. Abrielle hugged her arms as the coat Zoltana gave her was not as thick as the one she used. It was a poor-quality coat to match her disguise.
"Halt!!" They heard someone call from behind them causing them to freeze. Zoltana eyed Abrielle then instructed with a low voice. "I will take care of this, keep your head down while acting cold." She instructed, and then they both turned towards the person who spotted them out to avoid suspicion.
A smile beamed on Zoltana’s face as she looked at the person. It was one of the patrolling knights. "Liam, how are you doing tonight?" She chimed starting the greetings.
Liam was a bunky guy who knew Zoltana since she was a maid in the castle whose appearance stood out because of her golden skin complexion and silver eyes. "Zoltana, why does it look like you are sneaking out?" He asked, finding something suspicious about them.
Zoltana frowned with her lips a bit tilted, "Suspicious; I am not sneaking out. Just don’t want to be too loud. I am just going out to explore the city and maybe grab some drinks since the princess is asleep and the prince is out." Zoltana answered.
Liam frowned, "are you allowed to do that?"
"Come on Liam, there is nothing wrong with a maid leaving at night. Some of the maids even stay outside." Zoltana answered boldly that you would not suspect a thing.
"What about your friend? She doesn’t seem familiar." Liam spotted out, and Abrielle held herself. She was a bit scared.
"Oh she, of course you won’t know her. She works only in the princess wing so she isn’t popular and super shy. If you don’t mind, we might miss the ride. The wine boy is waiting." Zoltana explained, but Liam still found the maid suspicious.
"Oh really, let her lift her head. I need to confirm something." The guard requested remembering the hell they went through as training the time the princess snuck out. Abrielle’s eyes are wide. They were screwed.
"There is no big deal. She is just super shy." Zoltana made an excuse but Liam was unheeding. Abrielle’s heartbeat escalated as she raised her head, praying that the guard would not recognize her.
"Liam, what are you doing flirting with maids? Get back to your post?" Someone from the patrol team instructed. Liam glanced over recognizing the person. "I wasn’t flirting but wanted to.." he was about to explain but was rudely interrupted by the person.
"No buts, back to your station. The prince is out; we need to be extra cautious to ensure the princess’s safety." The person who was likely Liam’s superior said with a firm voice. Liam drew out a breath and started walking away.."don’t worry I will grab some snacks for you." Zoltana said, teasingly, watching Liam leave as she grabbed Abrielle’s hand. They started sprinting in the direction of the delivery carriages.
"We are here," Zoltana mentioned as they approached an old carriage used to carry barrels. She nodded at the coach boy as they climbed up to the back. Abrielle successfully got up followed by her. The coach boy closed the coach and then walked over to the front to start the carriage.
