Chapter 111: She saved the queen
Chapter 111: She saved the queen
News about how the new prince consort, Princess Abrielle, saved the queen from poisoning quickly spread in the palace and not everyone was happy about it.
Some were genuinely stunned, like Cedric. Why would Abrielle take a risk to save the queen, knowing fully well she has sent assassins after her life? Cedric could never understand how Abrielle’s head functioned.
He was in the king’s study giving a report on yesterday’s incident when they were attacked by a group of ghouls controlled by sorcerers while tracking a possible lead on the case of a group of sorcerers’ cult working in Darconia.
It was the same thing as always the partial favouritism towards Lucian. In the past, there was actually a time when he was bothered by the way his father acted towards his children who had mothers and him.
He might have been the eldest, but he was invisible like an extra no one saw. That’s why he practised harder at every study just to get his father’s attention and favour, but it didn’t change a thing because Lucian was always there. They were just a year apart; after that, he gave up and just wanted to focus on not dying.
He was as good and even better than Lucian at some things, which threatened Eleanore, who saw his existence as a threat to her son to date.
"I am glad to hear the priestess was of great help. You did well." the king praised, and Cedric found himself subconsciously supporting Callista like it was what he was meant to do.
"Callista hasn’t just been of good help, but the entire operation is run by her. If not for her abilities we would be working blindly." He defended, which surprised the King at the fact his proud eldest son, who could never acknowledge his brother’s strength, was actually praising someone.
Before the king could answer, one of his private knights, the king’s men, came in with urgent news.
"Pardon my intrusion, your majesty. There is something that needs your immediate notice." The knight apologized with a slight bow. Lucian was surprised by this, but Cedric was interested and just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
"You can go ahead," the king gave the knight permission but continued, which he did.
"The Queen, Her Majesty, was saved from an assassination attempt a few minutes ago, and the culprit is in custody ", the knights informed. Cedric was disturbed by the news, not that he cared about the queen, but because he was aware the queen was with the royal ladies having tea, including Abrielle if Callista told the truth.
"How was the queen attacked in broad daylight within the palace grounds?" The king jolted from his seat, pissed; if that was the case, it meant there was a loophole in the security system their enemies had discovered and were now exploiting. The knights understood the king’s concern and quickly explained the situation to avoid misunderstanding.
"She wasn’t attacked, but there was an attempted poisoning, which the prince consort, Princess Abrielle, noticed and exposed the maid. The maid is currently under investigation to find out who was behind." The knight explained, leaving the king stunned, but Cedric had a feeling of unrest.
Why would Abrielle take risks to rescue the queen while knowing fully that the queen wants her dead? "Where is my wife now?" He asked if it was best he spoke directly to Abrielle rather than for him to make random speculations.
The knight was hesitant to answer Cedric’s question, and he didn’t like that in the smallest bit. "Have your ears gone deaf?" He scoffed trying his best to control his rage in front of the king.
"Pardon my behaviour; the princess is currently under the care of the royal physician in the Queen’s Castle." The knight replied, and the Atmosphere suddenly plummeted to an all-time cold. His body Instinctively reacted that way towards the news.
The knight shrank under the pressure, "Cedric, get yourself under control," the king’s words fell on deaf ears. This was the reason Cedric and the king never really got along. Whenever his rage acted, no command could go through to him.
Without laying a finger on the higher-skilled knight, he fell to the ground, losing control of his knees as he shook. The atmosphere around Cedric was truly terrifying. The king’s knuckles turned white; he knew without a doubt Cedric was the strongest Among his children and should be the crown prince, but a monster can never lead humans.
"Why is she under a physician’s care? Better speak, I don’t have much patience." Cedric warned the knights on a serious note.
"She lost consciousness on her way out of the castle, her condition is unknown." The knight was barely able to say while trembling and sweating profusely.
That piece of information didn’t make Cedric feel any better. His aura didn’t change; his jaw clenched and unclenched, and without the king’s permission, he walked out. He was a tyrant without a doubt.
After Cedric was gone, heavy pressure was lifted from the King’s shoulders as he could finally breathe and fell back on his seat.
Lucian’s gaze flickered then he gave his father a slight bow. "I will take my leave now to check up on the queen." He informed the king before leaving for his mother’s quarters. The king’s hands were still clenched.
Cedric was getting more terrifying with each passing day. The Cedric matched straight to the Queen’s Castle. The castle had a restricted entrance as it was the king’s harem. No one except the king could enter without the Queen’s personal approval, but Cedric could care less about that, and no one dared to stop him as he made his way through the castle walls.
He soon arrived at the Queen’s physician quarters, the physician was startled by Cedric’s appearance. "Where is she?" He asked the physician, who quickly straightened himself up.
"She is this way, but unfortunately, I can’t detect what is wrong with her. It’s like she is in a coma ." The physician explained that Abrielle’s condition was a mystery despite his years of practice.
