Chapter 66: The Web of Mysteries

"Two hundred? How old are you guys exactly?" Annalise asked as she took another pouch from the bag and restarted collecting herbs.

"Almost around... five hundred years," Kenric answered while thinking back to the years he and his brothers had spent in the Midnight Realm and outside of it.

"WHAT?"

The force with which Annalise turned her head around to look at the man, she almost got whiplash in return. If not for Kenric who was immediately there to catch her, she would probably have ended up on the ground.

"Is it that shocking?" Kenric asked as he pulled her into his arms and wrapped both his hands around her.

"Of course, it is. Ever since the Light Fae disappeared, their lineage has only been able to live a maximum of three hundred years or so. But you are saying that the three of you are already five hundred years old and you all still look so young. How’s that possible?" She questioned.

Kenric looked into her eyes as he smiled warmly. "We are not the same as others, Little Bird. We are the Dark Lords."

Annalise stared at the man as she couldn’t find any words to say in response. Their gazes were locked together and while she was just looking at him to see whether he was joking or being serious, he seemed to be trying to study her expression to see her reaction to the revelation. "Then... what are you?" She finally found herself asking after a few long moments.

A smile appeared on his full red lips as he brushed his nose against hers, causing her heart to jump inside her chest at the nearness between their faces. "You are asking too many questions, Little Bird. Do you want to get all your answers in just one day?"

Annalise opened her mouth to protest but then changed her mind when his next words fell into her ear. "I’ll let you find the answer to this question on your own. We are going to spend the rest of our lives together, you can take your time to learn about us and find out exactly... what we are."

Maybe his words didn’t but his eyes definitely carried the hint of a challenge and she found herself accepting that challenge as she nodded her head in confidence. "Alright, one day, I’ll surely find out all the mysteries surrounding the three of you."

The smile on his lips only bloomed further as he placed a kiss on the tip of her nose before speaking, "Good. It will be fun for all of us to try and solve the mysteries. Me and my brothers will sort out the ones surrounding you and you will do the same about the ones surrounding us."

"Me?" Annalise asked in surprise as she pointed her finger toward herself while looking at him with arched eyebrows in question. What sort of mysteries were surrounding her?

Kenric let out a small sigh as the smile on his lips dimmed and he became serious. "Yes, Little Bird. There are mysteries surrounding you too, it’s just you too aren’t aware of them yet. So, we will together work on solving them and finding the answers."

"Why do you think so?" Annalise didn’t wait even a second before asking that question. The thought of them seeing her as a mysterious person didn’t sit right with her for some reason, probably because it meant that something was wrong with her, or different that she wasn’t aware of at all.

"Can’t you feel it? The things that are now happening to you or around you that no longer look normal. Or are you still trying to blame everything on the castle and its curse?" Kenric questioned her and even though his voice was soft and still carried its warmth, Annalise felt chills running down her spine as her mind followed the direction of his words that almost sounded like accusations to her.

"I..." She opened her mouth to speak but there was nothing she could say in her defense. She couldn’t deny that there were indeed things happening around her that didn’t seem normal, or magically normal. It was not only about the incidents that were happening to her or the way the castle was reacting to her, but also the fact that she was slowly finding a new side of her - one that was more powerful than what she believed.

"Hey," Kenric called her softly as he cupped her face in his palms and made her look up straight into his smoldering eyes. "Let’s not think too much about it for now. Just like I said, we will find all the answers slowly in due time. Right now, we have a very important task at hand."

Annalise turned her face to look at the vast fields of herbs and a sigh left her lips immediately. So far, she hadn’t even collected even one-fifth of the total spiritual herbs that were growing there. "This is almost impossible. How about you help me too instead of just making those filled pouches disappear?"

Kenric raised his eyebrows at her accusation but didn’t say anything. Instead, his smile returned to his lips as he slowly nodded his head in agreement. "Alright, as you wish. I’ll help you."

Annalise finally felt a little bit relieved. Even though including him didn’t mean that they would be able to collect the herbs before night but at least, it would surely provide some help.

She took out another empty pouch from the bag that was hanging across her shoulder and moved farther toward the spiritual herbs growing on the other side of the pond. "Do we have to collect the spirit water too?" She asked and turned to look at Kenric when she didn’t find him beside her.

She noticed him standing inside the pavilion with his left hand raised high in the air and a re-entry covering his entire palm as he chanted some kind of spell.

The very next moment, she saw hundreds of empty pouches appearing in the mid-air and when he added his second hand to the spell, a single flick of his wrist resulted in a miracle.
