Chapter 64: The Secret of Mountains
Chapter 64: The Secret of Mountains
Annalise watched as they drifted deeper into the mountains. It had already been half an hour since they left the castle and they still were wandering in the mountains behind the castle. She wondered exactly where that Herb Valley was located.
"You said that the Dark Forest isn’t really located behind the castle. What does it mean?" She asked her husband as she was curious to know more about the mystery of the Dark Forest, especially after what Kenric mentioned at the beginning of their journey when she was afraid of entering the back mountains.
"These mountains aren’t as simple as they look, Little Bird. Forests and mountains in our realms hide the greatest secrets." Kenric told her as he led the horse towards a narrow valley that was located between two high cliffs but it was definitely not the Herb Valley looking at its barren state.
Annalise opened her mouth to tell him that he hadn’t answered her question but stopped when he continued soon after. "That Dark Forest, it’s not a part of these mountains. It’s a hidden realm that is linked with the castle. You can’t enter it from anywhere else but only from the backyard of the castle."
"It’s a different realm?" Annalise asked as she turned her face to look at Kenric from over her shoulder.
"Right, it’s made from primordial energy and the creatures lurking in its shadows are the ones that are created from that energy," Kenric explained, and the images of the red-eyed monsters immediately popped up in Annalise’s mind.
"Primordial energy? The one that is rumored to be the reason behind the extinction of the Seelie Bloods... or more like the Seelie Realm." She remembered reading about this said energy in one of the history books.
"That’s right," Kenric confirmed as they strode deeper into the narrow valley. The deeper they went, the darker it was becoming around them.
"I thought the primordial energy was pure, but then why it’s rumored to be the reason behind all the bad things that happened in the past?" Her question wasn’t directed to Kenric. It was more of a thought that she spoke out loud. Regardless, she still got an answer from him.
"The primordial realm was destroyed around twelve thousand years or so. It is said that not one but two types of energies came out from that realm and spread across the other realms. The Light Queen caught the pure primordial energy in an immortal flower and took it to the Seelie Realm. As for the dark energy, it went after the Queen to find its other half - the pure energy."
"That was how both the energies ended up inside the Seelie Realm. But while the dark energy was left in freedom and the pure energy was confined, it destroyed the balance between light and darkness. The rumors say that what happened to the Seelie Realm was the result of this imbalance."
Annalise listened silently, finally learning something about the Seelie Realm, and to her surprise, it was Kenric who was providing her with this knowledge. She expected him to know so much about the history of the realms, he just didn’t look like that type of person.
"What happened to the two energies after that?" She asked as the question popped up in her mind.
"It’s said that the pure energy is still locked inside that divine flower and hidden somewhere deep in the Seelie Realm. And as for the dark energy, most of it was also locked inside the Seelie Realm but over the years, it has been seeping out into other realms through the gaps and cracks in the wards that surround the Seelie Realm." Kenric answered.
Annalise remained silent for a while as she thought about all that she learned. They were already at the end of the valley and what waited for them ahead was a dense forest. "I’m sure that the pure energy is so powerful. Did no one try to get their hands on it?"
This time, Kenric remained silent for a long time that she almost thought he won’t be answering the question, but then he did - "The divine flower containing the pure primordial energy is said to be hidden somewhere deep inside the Seelie Palace and it was the late Fae Queen herself who hid it before her death. Not just anyone can manage to break the spells and wards set by such a powerful being."
He stopped to take a deep breath before continuing, "And even if someone is bold enough to try it, he or she will have to face the dark energy first to even reach the Seelie palace. The home of the Seelie Bloods is not a small place. It’s said to be the second biggest realm out of all the four realms, which means that the traps and dangers lurking in that realm will be too much for anyone to survive."
Annalise didn’t need him to explain further, she had already understood why no one ever tried to get their hands on the pure energy, it was a suicide mission.
"We are here."
She was pulled out of her thoughts when Kenric suddenly spoke after a couple of minutes. As she looked ahead, she found them standing at the edge of a stone bridge that was built over a stream, and on the other edge was a beautiful waterfall streaming down the cliff.
She tried to look around, trying to see a road or a path on the other side of the bridge but there was nothing but the waterfall and the cliff. "Wait, what’s going on?" She asked when Kenric jumped down from the horse before helping her.
"You will see when we will reach the waterfall. I told you that these mountains are hiding great secrets. Now, let’s go." The man took hold of her hand after trying the horse to a nearby tree and then he led her towards the bridge.
It was time for her to see for herself just what secrets these mountains were hiding.
