The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 42: The Daughter of the Light

Chapter 42: The Daughter of the Light

When Annalise woke up the next morning, she found the other side of the bed empty as Kenric had already left. She looked outside the window and noticed the clear sky and the cool breeze that was being accompanied by the soft morning sunlight.

The view outside was completely opposite to the dark stormy night that had just passed. Though she didn’t ask any of the Lords to confirm it, she was still pretty sure that the weather of the previous night had something to do with one of her husbands - most likely Damien.

As her eyes wandered around her bedroom, she noticed how lively and cozy it had become in the past half month compared to when she first came to live here. Her gaze traveled further over the bookshelf, the cabinets, and vases, and then finally over the vines that were covering a major portion of the room and that’s when her eyes caught sight of something.

She climbed out of her bed and moved closer to the side wall with the open window to take a closer look at the vines and realized that what she just saw wasn’t just an illusion but there were indeed small flowers blooming on the vines.

Very small in size, with soft white petals and crimson red centers, they appeared nothing like any other flowers she had ever seen before in her life.

She brushed the tip of her index finger against one of the petals of a flower and felt an exchange of energy as a soft sizzling sensation worked up through her finger. She brushed her finger again over the flower to confirm the energy exchange and felt the same sensation all over again.

The tip of her index finger had turned sparkly bright red after touching the white petals of the flower - another sign that the flowers weren’t normal at all, or at least, not as normal as a flower should be.

"What secrets are you hiding?" She asked the flower as she gave its petals a last stroke with her finger before pulling away.

For the next couple of minutes, she searched through the room, looking for more flowers as far as the vines were spread, and she ended up counting over two dozen of the little beauties that had graced her bed-chamber with their arrival.

A knock on the bedroom door a couple of minutes later finally pulled her attention away. "Come in."

Sera walked in with a bucket of water and a towel in her hands. Just like every other morning, she helped Annalise in getting dressed for the day.

"My Lady, the Lords have left for the Capital City early this morning. They asked us to tell you that they will return before noon." Sera informed Annalise as she helped her into a silk lavender-colored dress.

"They went to the capital again?" Annalise’s question wasn’t directed to anyone in particular but Sera still answered, "Lord Kenric said that they would be having a meeting with the Grand Duke and Generals."

Annalise nodded her head in understanding, not asking any further questions as she was aware that Sera won’t be able to answer them.

Since she was now living in a castle far away from the capital city with next to no link with the outside world, she no longer had any knowledge about what was going on in the Seelie Realm.

After her marriage, she didn’t get to know much about the disappearance of the murder cases that had been going around in their realm but after seeing her husbands constantly visiting the capital to meet with the king, it seemed like the situation had only turned for the worse.

Everyone believed that her husbands could save their realm, or at least that’s what the High Priestess had told everyone, but the question was - how? How were her husbands going to save their realm? What it was about them that they had been hiding from her?

Shaking the thoughts out of her mind, Annalise turned her attention to getting ready before she left her from and headed downstairs to have her breakfast.

Miles and Miles away from the Cursed Castle, the Dark Forest, the Capital City, and the Seelie Realm, on the other side of magical wards, another realm existed. One that was ruled by different powers, and darkness lurked in the shadows of this place.

Midnight Realm

~

A woman sat on the high throne made of obsidian and gold molded together with hints of silver every now on then. It was a huge throne and an ancient one too. It was surrounded by immense power but not as much as the one sitting on it.

Her long black gown was wrapped around her curvaceous body like a second skin, and a crown sat on top of her head with rubies engraved in it. She radiated the aura of power and superiority, of a queen.

Her eyes were fixed on the magical mirror that was hovering in the center of the throne room. The crystalline glass filled with darkness that resonated with the very essence of the Midnight Realm.

The silver water shimmered through the darkness before an image appeared in the mirror. A beautiful young woman, with platinum blue hair and deep blue eyes, was busy reading a book under the centuries-old oak tree that was taking over a huge portion of the side garden near the south wing of her new home.

Her lavender dress fluttered in the soft breeze and a small smile played on her lips as she enjoyed the book.

A servant approached her with a tray of freshly brewed tea and a plate of pastries that she placed next to the woman before returning inside the castle.

The woman with the crown watched the other woman through the mirror, a small smile playing on her crimson-painted lips.

She turned her attention to the little black cat that was sitting on her lap, brushing her long nails through its fur.

"The daughter of the light, they have finally found her."
