The Veil of Darkness -
Chapter 38: The Unexpected Encounter
Chapter 38: The Unexpected Encounter
Annalise found herself standing in the dark empty corridor located at the far corner of the east wing of the castle, an area that was still too foreign to her.
She had no idea how she ended up in that place. All that she could recall was that she was bundled up under the quilt on her bed with all of her husbands present in the bedroom. Her memory was too hazy for her to properly recall anything other than that little information.
As she looked around her surroundings, her ocean-blue eyes landed on a familiar structure - it was the pavilion that she noticed during the daytime. It was standing at the very end of the corridor.
She looked further and her eyes landed on the sky which was filled with millions of stars and a full moon which seemed quite odd because she recalled seeing a crescent just a couple of days ago. Based on that, it was too early for a full moon, still one was present right in front of her eyes.
"Isn’t it beautiful?" An unfamiliar but sweet voice spoke out of nowhere, startling Annalise and as she hurriedly turned to face the direction from where the voice had come, she found a young girl of around fifteen or sixteen standing there with a blue glow covering her from the head to toe.
She had pointy ears, long red hair, dark green eyes, and a very pretty face. She looked like a fairy that had existed only in stories ever since they also disappeared thousands of years ago along with the other pureblood seelies.
"W-who are you?" Annalise asked as she took several steps back only to find her back pressed against a pillar in the corridor, reducing her chances of escaping from the scene.
The girl smiled, her face becoming even prettier as a result. "Why are you looking afraid? I’m not going to hurt you." Her voice was so sweet that it almost made Annalise want to believe her words.
Thankfully, her mind was working rationally for once and didn’t get tricked by the sweetness in the girl’s voice or the delicate and harmless exterior that she was projecting.
"I asked who are you and what are you doing here?" This time, Annalise found her voice coming out much firmer than the first time.
The girl kept smiling as if she was completely unfazed by her questions and Instead of answering, she just raised her hand and pointed in the direction of the garden as if the answer lay there.
Annalise followed the direction she was pointing at and her eyes landed on the huge fountain that was now working perfectly unlike what happened in the afternoon. However, as soon as her eyes landed on it, the memories came rushing back.
Fear shook her body and she felt suffocation engulfing her as more and more memories of the incident flooded her brain. At a point, everything became too overwhelming for her to take in but right at that moment, she felt a soft touch on her arm and everything became quiet in her mind.
When she looked up, she found the girl standing right in front of her with a smile still decorating her face. She looked, even more, prettier from up close.
"My reason to meet you is to actually apologize for what happened this afternoon. No one wanted to hurt you but because the binding spell on the fountain broke apart all of a sudden, it went out of control and resulted in the incident." The fairy spoke in a tender voice as she kept holding Annalise’s hand with both of hers.
"Binding spell?" Annalise asked in confusion as her eyes took a sneak peek at the fountain as she was worried the bad memories would come rushing back all over again. But her surprise, nothing of that sort happened this time.
"Right. Everything in this castle is cursed that’s why it’s in this state. The curse was placed by a very powerful witch and no one ever succeeded in breaking it until... you appeared."
Annalise gawked at the girl with her mouth hanging open in surprise. "Me?" What did she have to do with the curse or when with breaking it?
"Hmm." The girl hummed as she nodded her head in response to Annalise’s question. "Something about you is changing this place, slowly untying the knots of the curse. Though I’m still not sure why you are the only exception to this curse, you are likely to finally change the fate of this place. You even succeed in reviving me back. It’s been thousands of years since I last open my eyes and looked at this world."
Her words seemed too honest for Annalise not to believe in. She observed the girl closely and noticed the way the latter’s eyes skimmed over their surroundings with emotions swirling in her emerald eyes.
"Who are you exactly?" She was almost tired of asking the same question again and again, and even though her previous attempts had been in vain, she still tried once more.
"I’m a garden fairy. I have been living in this castle ever since it was created and it was my job to keep the garden around this castle as beautiful as it ever could. I rarely interacted with the people living in it. Before you, there was only a little girl that saw me a couple of times before the castle was taken over by the curse." The fairy finally explained.
"You are a... garden fairy." Even saying it out loud didn’t help her believe in the words. She finally got to see a real fairy. "So... not everyone can see you?" She asked out of curiosity.
"Only those who can win my curiosity." The fairy answered with a smile.
"And I make you curious about..?"
"Didn’t I already tell you? The curse is finally lifting and the reason is none other than you. Of course, I’m curious about you. Besides, as I said, I wanted to apologize for what happened this afternoon. It was an accident that happened in my garden but I’ll make sure that similar things won’t happen in the future." She finally sounded a little bit serious.
"Now you should return to your sleep. Your husbands are becoming worried."
