The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 244: The Stronger One

Chapter 244: The Stronger One

Annalise couldn’t reject his proposal this time almost immediately even though she wasn’t really planning on accepting it. She just got slightly lost when he mentioned about the upcoming battles that she was supposed to face.

This wasn’t the first time she had heard something like this. There had been times and certain people in the past who had said the same thing as casually as if it was already set in stars.

"Why do you think I’ll be facing any sort of battle?" She couldn’t help herself from asking as she watched him closely, still trying to assess his expressions despite failing in them continuously from the very beginning.

Esme watched her return and the look in his eyes almost made it appear like he was impressed with her question but not in a good way, almost like he couldn’t believe she would ask such a stupid question.

"Are you still not aware of your destiny? I know that you still haven’t found out about real identity or exactly what sort of fate the stars have created for you... but I think it’s been pretty obvious from the beginning that you can no longer get away from the mission that you have started. There’s no going back for you, Annalise."

This was the very first time he had used her name but it almost felt like he wasn’t talking to her but someone else at that very moment, as if despite looking at her, his gaze was fixed on someone else.

Annalise took in a deep breath, realizing that he was talking about their current investigation and its fight. "Do you think... are all the bad things happening around our world related to each other?" She suddenly asked a question that probably neither of them was expecting.

"What do you mean?" Esme asked and it seemed like he was asking about what she wanted to know from him instead of what her question implied.

"I mean... is the same person behind all the bad things happening around our world?" Annalise asked her question, this time modifying it slightly to make the meaning clear.

"Of course, it is," Esme answered immediately in such an adamant tone that it almost surprised Annalise. "Whether anyone... or you... believe it or not but every bad thing or unhappy thing happening around in any part of this world is related to one single entity... the darkness."

Annalise was in a complete trance as she listened to him, his words sounded like abstract truth and she couldn’t find it inside her to deny his objective as a huge part of her knew that he was not just bluffing.

Esme let out a small chuckle before he relaxed in his seat and crossed his knees before resting his head against the back of the chair. "This just explains how important darkness is. This world just can’t exist without it."

Another statement that despite sounding so off, was an abstract truth, and Annalise couldn’t say anything against it. The world indeed couldn’t exist without darkness and light coexisting in it but...

"Darkness is important for the survival of this world but that doesn’t allow it to destroy that same world without any mercy." She spoke while looking at Esme, this time it was she who was staring at him with confidence as she continued speaking - "And since it has forgotten its boundaries, we need to remind it of them."

"Then what are you going to do?" Esme asked almost immediately, his tone brimming with excitement and curiosity as he waited for her to answer his question. "Are you going to destroy the darkness?"

The question almost made Annalise chuckle as she shook her head while speaking, "I’m no one to even think about destroying darkness. Besides, I don’t think it’s something that can be destroyed with any magic, spells, or weapons."

"What about the light then?"

"The light?" Annalise was just the slightest bit lost by his excitement-filled questions. It almost seemed like he was enjoying their current discussion on darkness way more than anything she had ever noticed which only made her question his identity more than ever.

Esme shrugged his shoulders as he modified his question before asking it again. "I’m asking what you think about the light destroying the darkness. Normal people indeed can’t do anything to the darkness no matter how powerful they are but the light is different, it’s just as powerful as the darkness, and some even believe... that it’s even more powerful than the darkness."

He whispered the last part while shifting his body forward in her direction as if he didn’t want anyone else to listen to that last few words except for... her.

"So, tell me about your thoughts. Do you think light can destroy the darkness?" He repeated his question while shifting in his seat once again but this time, both his tone and body language seemed like he was kind of testing her with that question.

Annalise couldn’t understand what the man exactly wanted to hear from her. Was it a test to check whether she was strong-minded enough to at least think about destroying the darkness that was plaguing their world? Or if it was for some other reason that she was completely overlooking? Nonetheless, she gave the answer that she believed was her sincerest.

"Your question doesn’t make any sense. Maybe the light is stronger among those two or maybe both the light and the darkness are equal but despite their differences, I don’t understand why light would ever try to destroy its own shadow. It’s not like light can survive without darkness or the other way around."

"So if you have the powers of the light inside you and you have the opportunity to destroy the darkness to save your world, will you not do it?" Esme asked the question abruptly.

"What are you..."

"Answer me! What would you do?"

"Even if I have the powers of light I will never destroy the darkness because despite what everyone thinks about destruction of the darkness being the solution to all the problems in our world, it’s far from the truth and it will only lead to the end of our world just like what happened to the Primordial Realm."
