The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 122: Into The Memories

Chapter 122: Into The Memories

Being left behind while the dark lords would head to visit the Queen of the Mer Court, definitely didn’t seem like a good plan to Annalise. She was also curious to see the Mer court and meet the Seelie blood that seemed to have survived the great tragedy ten thousand years ago.

Yet looking at her husbands’ reaction, it was pretty clear that they had no plans of taking her along with them, and Valerius’ next words only confirmed her guess. "Not today, Annalise. We have something important to take care of right now. How about you look around the town in the meanwhile and meet the locals here? This place is protected by the powerful wards of the Mer Queen, so you will be safe here."

Annalise let out an unhappy sigh as she watched her husbands ride away on their horses as they headed in the direction of the mountains right behind the town where the magnificent waterfalls were located.

Suddenly being left all alone in a such non-familiar place, she had few options left in her hands. She could either use Valerius’ idea and take a look around the town, or she could just return to her room inside the inn and wait for her husbands’ return.

Letting out another sigh, she gave a last look at the departing figures of her husbands before she returned inside the inn to rest for a while. The long journey and multiple unexpected incidents over the past couple of days had tired her out and the first thing that her body and mind wanted the most was nothing else than a proper rest, one where her body didn’t need to move, her mind didn’t need to think, and her powers didn’t have to be on alert all the time to protect her.

Changing into a comfortable gown, she hurriedly laid down on the warm and comfortable bed. It didn’t even take her too long to feel deep in the slumber.

-

When Annalise opened her eyes again she found herself standing in a very unfamiliar place that was filled with white fog and nothing else. Even the floor where she was standing couldn’t be seen because of the thick fog.

Her heart picked up speed as she realized that something really wrong was going on and unfortunately, she was once again all alone to deal with it. Just as she was about to lose her mind, her gaze landed on the snow beast that had suddenly appeared in front of her.

She crouched down to look closely at the baby beast as she rubbed its fur-covered head, "So, it’s not a dream, right?" If it had only been her, she would have out ruled the situation as a dream but the presence of the baby snow lion changed her theory as she could sense its strong magical essence that wasn’t possible in a dream.

The little beast purred as it happily rubbed its head against her palm. It seemed to really like her and something told her that it had more or less to do with her being its savior.

’This place contains my memories.’ The snow beast suddenly spoke and his sweet melodic voice ranged in Annalise’s head which her scurry away from the little beast as she stared at it in pure shock.

Since master wanted to know exactly what happened in the Millerville Portal Hall two decades ago, you will find the answers here in my memories.’ The snow beast continued as if it hadn’t seen the dumbfounded reaction of its so-called master.

"Y-you can... s-speak..." Annalise murmured through her shock as she stared at the little beast that was barely a little big bigger than the size of both her palms combined. Talking beasts weren’t abnormal but they hadn’t been seen outside the Midnight Realm ever since the great tragedy of the Seelie Realm. Who would have thought that she would get to meet one like this?

The little lion gave her a look that appeared like it was the least impressed by her reaction. ’Is it that weird to hear me talking? Besides, I can’t really talk but since I’m now connected to you through the master-subject bond, we can communicate through our shared mind link.’

Annalise hurriedly shook her head in response to its question while she tried to wrap her mind around the rest of the information. "I... I’m just a little surprised as I wasn’t expecting you to be a divine beast." She did try to defend herself but it didn’t go as planned.

’Master, how can you not know that the beast you chose as your subject was not just any normal beast? I belong to the ancient line of divine snow lions and I’m the last descendant left of my race.’ The little beast didn’t only reprimand her but it also used the chance to show off.

Annalise just nodded her head as she had no idea about what to say in response to his snarky remarks. She was still busy wrapping her mind around the fact that she not only got a talking snow lion but it also claimed to be her subject and was connected to her through the second most sacred bond to ever exist in their world after the soul mate bond.

However, ever since the divine magical beasts disappeared along with the extinction of the light faes, no one had heard about anyone from the Seelie Empire ever bonding with a divine beast. But here she was... claimed to be the master of a baby snow lion that was definitely not a baby at all.

"What’s your true form? I mean... you can’t really be that small, right?" She finally found her voice to ask the first question that popped up in her mind.

The little beast tried to shake its head which resulted in its entire body shaking which almost made Annalise chuckle because the scene appeared really cute. Realizing that its body was too small to handle sudden forceful movements, the little lion changed its approach to answering her question.

’I am thirty-nine years old and my true form was what you saw at the Portal Hall. I’m now back to such a small frame because I ended up losing most of my powers during the resurrection. Now, I’ll need to practice along with you for the coming period to regain my powers.’

Annalise nodded her head while wondering about the part where she needed to train with it. What kind of training would she need to go through just for the little lion to grow into a big giant?

"You said that I can see what happened in that incident of the Millerville Portal Hall two decades ago in your memories." She was suddenly reminded of its initial statement and her heart was once again beating fast but this time for an entirely different reason.

The thought of finally getting some much-needed answers about the Millerville Portal Hall incident filled her with excitement.

Right. I was the guardian beast of the Millerville Portal Hall ever since my elder brother passed the responsibility to me before he passed away. I was supposed to live a free life but then unexpected incidents happened and my brother passed away and left me as the new guardian beast of the Portal Hall that he was supposed to guard.’ The little lion didn’t sound sad but there was definitely a slight change as it mentioned its brother.

’As the guardian of the portal, my memories were linked with the portal. Both of us had witnessed every single incident that took place in the Portal Hall for the past thirty-nine years. You can find every second of that fateful day in my memories.’ The little snow lion informed her.

"Right! I finally recalled reading about the guardian beasts of the portals. Along with every assigned family, a divine or night beast was also assigned to guard the portals." Annalise’s voice was filled with excitement as she recalled the little piece of information that she once learned about the magical portals.

The families and beasts that were assigned as the guardians of the portals were the best among their races and were bound to the safety of the portals at the risk of their lives.

"Can I... Can I see your memories and see the incident?" She asked with hope-filled eyes.

’Other than me, you are the only person who has the right to look through my memories.’ The little snow lion replied to her question which made Annalise’s hopes rise even more.

’However...’ The snow lion suddenly spoke in a hesitant voice which made Annalise look at it with wide eyes as she waited for it to continue. ’... what are you going to do after finding out the truth behind the incident?’

Annalise was left surprised by the question and it took her a couple of moments to respond and even then, she ended up asking a question in return instead of answering, "Is the incident really that shady?"
