The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 114: Last Breath

Chapter 114: Last Breath

Annalise didn’t even know what she was doing as she hurriedly crouched down beside the creature that seemed like a snow lion but with wings.

Her hands moved to touch it but Damien was there to stop her before she could have made the mistake. "Annalise!" He seemed almost pained as he called her in a warning tone. "You just suffered an attack from the dark energy and this creature was also infected with it. You shouldn’t be coming anywhere near it."

She could feel his worry for her through their bond but she couldn’t avoid the dying creature either. "Didn’t the black energy already leave its body?" She asked and looked around at her husbands for an answer.

Valerius crouched down on her other side as he nodded his head in response to her question before speaking, "It did but that doesn’t mean this creature is safe already. Besides, it’s dying, Annalise, let’s give it some peace in its last moments."

Annalise shook her head as something inside her refused to leave the poor creature in its current state. She had always carried a soft heart for animals throughout her life and if she watched one dying in front of her very eyes especially when it looked so innocent and helpless, she would hate herself for abandoning it.

"Annalise..." She heard Damien calling her name and it seemed like he was torn between shouting at her and staying calm to make her understand. "Wife, no matter how bad you feel right now, there is nothing that can be done. Let’s go." He said while pulling on her hand to make her stand up but she refused and pulled her hand out of his hold.

"I can’t..." She replied with another shake of her head, her eyes were burning with punished tears as her vision became blurry. "I need to save it..."

"And how the hell are you going to do that?" Damien was seriously at the end of his patience, the fear of losing her to the dark energy was punching him in his guts. He didn’t want to experience the same horrible feeling again when she was attacked by the dark energy.

"Damien..." Valerius spoke up as he pointed his attention at his brother. "Let her..." His voice carried some sort of commanding power in it but at the same time, there was also an assurance in it that he won’t let anything go wrong this time.

Annalise felt him resting his hand over her shoulder before he spoke to her. "Go on, Annalise. It only has a couple of minutes left." That was all that she needed to do what her soul was trying to make her do but she still quickly glanced at Damien. The man didn’t say anything but he didn’t try to stop her either.

She then looked at Kenric and the man gave her a little nod of encouragement. Ad none of her husbands were trying to stop her now, she finally turned her attention back to the creature and found it still looking at with its half-hooded eyes. She noticed how its breathing had become fainter in the past minute or two.

Her hand trembled a little as she moved it closer to the creature, the tension from her husbands wasn’t helping her situation at all. Somehow, she succeeded in placing her hand on its fur-covered body and found its body way colder than she was expecting.

She felt all her husbands tensing, even more, the moment her hand touched the creature but they finally started to relax when they noticed that no dark energy tried to jump out and attack her.

She slowly closed her eyes and tugged on her powers that had already been waiting on the surface to come out and help the creature even though she had no idea what she was supposed to do to save it.

She let her powers search the snow beast’s body to look for all its injuries and found traces of air, fire, and shadow energy that had injured it in several places.

She found her powers heading to the shadow energy first, trying to tame it and heal the injury. She wasn’t sure what to expect but was surprised when her powers succeeded in healing the injuries one by one caused by Damien’s shadow powers.

Her ears registered the gasp of pure surprise that belonged to Damien as the man probably realized what she was doing. The next moment, she found him returning to her side as he crouched down beside her and placed his hand on her other shoulder.

Once all the injuries caused by the shadow power were healed, her powers headed toward the air energy and she once again found it weird to find the presence of the unknown but yet so familiar element. She wasn’t sure if her powers could heal the injuries caused by the air power but to her surprise, they did start healing those injuries though it took way more time.

The last one that remained was the injuries but she knew even before starting that she couldn’t heal them on her own. "Kenric..." She called her husband and immediately found him moving closer as he came to kneel behind her before both his hands came to rest against her spine and she felt his fire spreading all over and inside her body.

Her powers reacted immediately, moving to heal the injuries caused by Kenric’s firepower, and in less than twenty seconds, she had already healed all the internal and external injuries of the snow beast.

She then felt something deep inside her moving, a power that she hadn’t felt before and she once again felt her husbands reacting and they all seemed taken aback by the new surge of power inside her.

The new energy made its way to her palm and then entered the almost dead body of the snow beast. A moment passed before all her powers came to a rest and she slowly opened her eyes... only to see the creature taking its last breath...!
