Chapter 74: Can never be mine

"Your Highness, I appreciate you accompanying me home," Venus began the conversation. "I hope I haven’t caused you trouble," she added softly, briefly lowering her gaze.

"I did it because my sister-in-law, Alora, would be upset. I can’t bear to see her distressed," Izaak explained to her.

Venus lifted her head to meet his gaze. "Alora has impressed everyone in the palace, won everyone’s heart there," she said, "while I couldn’t do well in my marriage."

"It was you, who on your wedding day refused to listen to Alora’s advice," Izaak remarked, his tone tinged with a hint of taunt. "You believed that if your older sister married a supernatural being, you should do the same. You are the reason for your own downfall."

"I regret that decision, Your Highness," Venus admitted softly, her voice filled with remorse.

"Do you truly regret it? I have my doubts. In fact, both Magnus and I suspect that you are quite skilled at acting. Who’s to say you don’t still harbor intentions to harm Alora through your dangerous schemes?" Izaak’s harsh words pierced Venus’s heart, bringing tears to her eyes.

"I admit that what I did to my elder sister was wrong. I’ve always resented her for not getting anything in my life. While she obtained the best, I ended up with the worst," Venus confessed.

Izaak chuckled at her response. "Why does it seem like you’re still jealous of Alora?" he questioned, his gaze penetrating.

Venus met his intense stare but remained silent.

"You ended up with the worst because you never wished for anything good for Alora. You should have at least supported her when everyone else tried to make her feel low," Izaak asserted, unmoved by whether Venus felt pleased or hurt by his words. He believed that since Alora couldn’t receive the support she deserved, he should provide it in her stead.

The carriage came to a halt as they finally were in the Wilson Family home. The coachman opened the door for them. Izaak stepped out first, followed by Venus.

"You should explain to your family what happened earlier. Present the right facts if you wish to live a better life," Izaak asserted and he turned to get back into the carriage.

"Your Highness, will you not come inside?" Venus asked.

"What will I do among the humans?" Izaak tilted his head over his shoulder. "My work was to drop you home safely," he stated and entered the coach.

Venus watched as the carriage departed. She then made her way inside the house with a heavy heart, thinking how she would tell her parents.

In the grand living room, Madam Aubrey was busy instructing the servants about the placement of the new furniture when her gaze fell upon Venus standing at the door.

"Venus!" Madam Aubrey exclaimed in shock, noticing her granddaughter’s distressed appearance.

Venus rushed into Madam Aubrey’s arms, embracing her tightly as tears streamed down her face. The sudden outburst startled everyone in the room.

"Oh, my dear child, what’s wrong?" Madam Aubrey asked, gently stroking Venus’s back in an attempt to comfort her. "Why are you crying so much?" she inquired, feeling perplexed by her granddaughter’s distress.

Rhea entered through the door leading to the residence garden, noticing the tense atmosphere in the room.

"Venus, why are you crying?" Rhea became wary of her daughter’s condition. She was quick to approach Venus.

Venus let go of her grandmother and embraced her mother. "Eugene... He... I left his house," she finally said while stuttering.

Madam Aubrey’s hand flew to her head in shock upon hearing Venus’s words as it started spinning. A maid quickly rushed to her side, offering support and guiding her to sit on the couch.

Meanwhile, Rhea gently cupped her daughter’s tear-stained face, urging her to calm down. She tenderly wiped away Venus’s tears as she continued to sob.

"Venus, did you truly leave your husband? What happened?" Madam Aubrey inquired, her voice tinged with concern and fear.

"Mother, let Venus be calm first," Rhea requested. She took her daughter to the other side of the couch and made her sit on it. "Give me water," she asked a maid.

Handing a glass of water to Venus, Rhea stroked her hair as she asked for her drink. Venus took a few sips before handing the glass back to her mother.

"Venus, did something happen again? A Husband and wife fight, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave the house or your husband," Madam Aubrey asserted.

"Eugene lied to me. He betrayed me, Grandma," Venus said as more tears escaped her eyes.

Madam Aubrey and Rhea were shocked to hear her. "What did Eugene do?" Rhea asked this time.

"Eugene is a werewolf," Venus revealed to them, causing their eyes to grow big.

"Werewolf?" Madam Aubrey was shocked by such a revelation.

"Yes. Eugene has a mate, who doesn’t belong to a high-ranking family like ours. That’s why his entire family hid the truth about this from us and let me marry him," Venus paused as her voice choked and more tears trailed down her cheeks.

"Mother, Grandma,..." She sniffled after taking a long breath, "Eugene wants to keep his mate as his mistress and will not even look at me. He even compelled me by marking me. Alora and Prince Magnus warned me on the marriage day about Eugene’s identity, but I asked Alora not to ruin my wedding day. I was so foolish."

Venus again began to weep, her cries reverberated in the entire living room.

Rhea, too, cried seeing her daughter in such a state while Madam Aubrey felt uneasiness in her chest.

"I went to Alora to ask for her help," Venus wiped the tears from her cheeks as she informed the two of them. "I feared that I would not be able to get off Eugene’s claws without her help," she stated.

"What did Alora do to help you?" Madam Aubrey asked.

"Eugene’s mark on me no longer exists. I am free of him and I will divorce him. I cannot live with a man, who can never be mine," Venus announced her decision to them.
