Chapter 294: We are enemies
"Clearly, you don’t know me yet," Venus said, pulling her hand back. "Just leave," she added firmly.
"The rain is pouring," Odin replied, his voice tinged with frustration. "I don’t want my clothes to get drenched. Changing again is such a hassle." He slumped back into the chair, his gaze drifting to the serene beauty of the rain-soaked green garden.
"Don’t you miss your family?" After a while, Venus asked softly, her tone probing yet gentle.
Odin tilted his head to look at her, a mixture of surprise and irritation in his eyes. "I didn’t expect you to dig into my past," he remarked, his voice was guarded.
"I merely asked a question," Venus responded in her calm voice. "If it bothers you, you don’t have to answer." She now silently prayed for the rain to stop soon so that she could go back inside the house. She didn’t want to sit next to Odin any longer. However, it didn’t appear that the rain would stop anytime soon.
Feeling a growing sense of frustration, Venus stood up and glanced around. Spotting the umbrella, she decided to make her move. Picking it up with a firm grip, she said, "I’m leaving. You can stay here all by yourself. No one will disturb you." Her tone was laced with annoyance.
As Venus stepped outside the gazebo, Odin unexpectedly slipped under the same umbrella. Startled, she tilted her head to look at him and instinctively took a step back. Odin, however, reached out and pulled her closer. "You make me work against my will," he said in a voice low.
"Nobody told you to accompany me," Venus muttered, her tone edged with annoyance. "Aren’t you getting drenched now?" she asked, glancing pointedly at his arm. The side of his overcoat was already speckled with water droplets.
She looked back at him just as he pulled her back into the gazebo. "We aren’t going to the residence now. Let the rain stop and then we will go," he stated, closing the umbrella and letting it rest against the pillar.
Venus crossed her arms across her chest. "I am getting bored here," she said.
"But you were enjoying the peace her for many hours," Odin affirmed.
"That’s because you weren’t here," Venus replied. "You don’t even bother to talk to me. And if I try to, you plainly insult me or get harsh."
"Why do you even want to know about me?" Odin questioned, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"Because we are friends now, aren’t we?" Venus replied, furrowing her brows in confusion.
"When did we become friends?" Odin chuckled, leaning against the pillar with a hint of amusement.
"Great! Then, we are enemies," Venus shot back, her voice filled with sarcasm. "Don’t try to protect me if I fall into danger. Enemies don’t do that. Keep that in mind," she proclaimed in a defiant tone.
Without waiting for a response, Venus turned and walked straight into the pouring rain. Odin opened his mouth to stop her, but seeing the fire in her eyes, he hesitated. He watched as she walked away, her figure gradually fading into the downpour.
Odin moved swiftly, catching up to Venus and positioning himself between her and the rain. He extended the umbrella over her, shielding her from the downpour. Venus stopped abruptly, her steps faltering as she looked up at him. Her eyes, glistening with raindrops, flickered.
Her entire face and body were drenched, rainwater clinging to her hair and clothes. "If you get sick, then don’t blame me," Odin angrily sneered at her and took her straight to the residence. Because of her, even his clothes, hair got drenched.
Odin handed the umbrella to the waiting servant at the door and escorted Venus inside. As they entered the warmth of the house, Rhea, Venus’s mother, greeted them with surprise evident in her wide-eyed expression.
"Venus, Odin, why did you get soaked in the rain?" Her tone held a mix of concern and bemusement, unable to comprehend why two grown adults would willingly subject themselves to such weather.
"Ask your daughter, Mrs. Wilson," Odin replied coolly, his gaze lingering on Venus with a hint of reproach, before turning away and striding off, leaving an awkward silence in his wake.
Venus shifted uncomfortably under her mother’s scrutinizing gaze. "It’s... it’s a long story," she began, her voice faltering slightly. "We were outside and..." She trailed off, unsure how to explain the sudden confrontation and Odin’s unexpected protectiveness without divulging too much.
Rhea sighed softly, her expression softening with maternal concern. "Go get changed, dear. You may catch a cold," she said gently, placing a comforting hand on Venus’s arm. "We can talk about it later."
Venus nodded gratefully, giving her mother a brief smile before heading upstairs to change out of her wet clothes.
After changing into a dry pair of clothing, Venus let her hair lose, allowing them to dry naturally. She opened the chest of the drawer next to the bed and took out a ruby necklace along with the letter that Eugene’s cousin, Solomon gave her a few days ago.
Opening it, Venus read what was in the letter.
"Venus, I have brought hot tea for you," Rhea said from the outside and she quickly hid them under the pillow, her heart racing with the need to keep its contents private.
She straightened up just as Rhea entered, carrying a tray adorned with a delicate porcelain teacup and a steaming pot of tea. Rhea placed the tray on the bedside table with a gentle clink of the tray against wood, then handed the cup to Venus.
"Thank you, Mother," Venus murmured gratefully, accepting the tea and taking a slow sip, appreciating its soothing warmth against her lips.
Rhea sat down on the edge of the bed, carrying a gentle expression. After a moment’s pause, she asked softly, "Venus, why didn’t you tell me that Solomon has taken an interest in you?"
Venus felt a pang of shock at her mother’s unexpected question. She had taken great care to ensure her parents didn’t find out about her connection with Solomon, fearing it would worry them unnecessarily.
