Chapter 214: Living as a widow

"Venus!" Alora exclaimed, her face lighting up as she wrapped her arms around her sister in a heartfelt embrace. "Your presence here is a delightful surprise," she confessed, gently breaking away from the hug.

"News of Prince Magnus’s ill-health reached us last night," Venus explained, her eyes softening with concern. "I felt I should come and ensure you were coping well. Mother has also sent these gifts for you," she added, indicating the baskets laden with care.

"Please convey my heartfelt gratitude to Mother for her thoughtfulness. Come, let’s sit and talk," Alora invited, guiding her sister towards the plush sofa.

"Your visit means a lot to me. Last night was indeed challenging. The prince was severely afflicted by the poison," she confided, her voice barely above a whisper as they settled down side by side on the sofa.

"Is he well now?" Venus asked.

"Yes, he has recovered," Alora answered, lowering her head. "I was the one, who asked His Highness to not punish Rubin and listen to his side of story. I made a grave mistake last night," she murmured, feeling low.

Venus, knowing well the compassionate nature of her sister, offered her wisdom. "Alora, not everyone harbors good intentions towards you. It’s crucial to exercise caution when placing your trust," she advised.

"He talked sweetly all the time," Alora said.

"Those with honeyed tongues can often be the most dangerous, Alora. They know how to twist words and manipulate others. I’ve crossed paths with such individuals. In fact, I must admit, there was a time when I was one of them," Venus confessed, her voice steady but her eyes revealing a hint of regret.

Alora looked at her sister, sensing the lingering shadows of Venus’s past. Yet, she found comfort in the fact that Venus was now acknowledging her past mistakes and learning from them.

"I have learned my lesson now," Alora said. "Now, tell me, what would you like to eat? Shall I ask Selvina to bring tea and cookies for us or do you want to eat some special snacks?" she queried.

"As for the refreshments, tea and cookies sound delightful," Venus replied, her lips curving into a small, appreciative smile.

Upon hearing Venus’s preference, Alora turned her attention to Selvina, who was standing by attentively. With a nod from Alora, Selvina bowed in acknowledgment and gracefully exited the room to prepare the requested tea and cookies.

"I can’t see Prince Magnus around. Is he resting?" Venus queried. "Mother was more worried than us. She didn’t even take a good sleep last night. Her dark circles in the morning told the entire story," she added.

"Prince Magnus isn’t in the chamber. He is with his brothers to discuss an important matter with them," Alora replied. "Do you take rest well?" she queried.

"Yes," Venus lied. She felt Alora was already burdened with numerous worries and giving her an additional worry wouldn’t do good.

"My father wishes for me to marry. He believes that my living as a widow is not suitable, especially considering I am only 22. Even Mother worries for me," Venus declared with a firmness in her voice.

"They may not express it directly, but I can’t shake off the feeling that I’ve somehow become a burden for them," she confided, her words laced with a hint of sorrow.

"That’s not true, Venus. Should I have a word with Father? If you’re not ready for marriage, no one will compel you," Alora reassured. She had grasped that Venus was no longer inclined towards matrimony.

"No. You need not to talk to Father. He only suggests marriage because he fears that once I cross a certain age, suitors will be scarce. But I also believe that I may not be able to endure another marriage. I craved the affection of a husband. Instead, Eugene offered me deceit. What if I encounter another man of his ilk? It seems wiser to remain single now. I felt the need to unburden myself of these thoughts that have been plaguing me for days," Venus confessed, her voice echoing with sincerity and a touch of melancholy.

"Oh, Venus," Alora murmured, wrapping an arm around her sister in a comforting side hug. "Whenever you feel anxious or uncertain, you’re always welcome here," she suggested gently.

Just then, Selvina entered the room, a tray in her hands, bearing the freshly brewed tea.

"Selvina, please join us for tea," Alora invited, extending a cup to her sister first.

Venus observed Alora’s treatment of the servants, noting the equality and respect she showed them. "Thank you for being such a supportive friend to my sister," she expressed, her words filled with genuine gratitude.

Selvina smiled and sat down across from them.

"I have a training session scheduled for tomorrow. Would you be interested in accompanying me, Venus?" Alora proposed unexpectedly. She believed that involving her sister in her activities might help Venus recover from her past more swiftly.

"A training for what?" Venus asked, her face reflecting her surprise.

"I need to hone my abilities. My eyes have the power to control supernatural beings," Alora revealed. She had come to trust her sister implicitly and felt that withholding any information from her would be unjust.

"That’s truly intriguing," Venus commented, her interest piqued. "I would love to join as long as the prince doesn’t object," she added.

"Don’t fret. I’ll discuss it with Magnus. He won’t object," Alora assured her, urging her to sip her tea.

Venus was suddenly overcome with emotion. Her sister’s kindness was overwhelming. Memories of her past actions towards Alora resurfaced, and a wave of remorse swept over her. She was reminded of the mistakes she had made and the regret that followed her actions.

With a gentle smile, Alora extended her hand, offering the chocolate cookie to Venus before she turned to Selvina, inviting her to partake in the treat as well.

’Venus, I won’t let you feel lonely. As long as I’m alive, I’ll make sure you live a good life too,’ Alora pledged in her mind.
