Chapter 212: To quieten our son
"Magnus, eat more. I’ve heard that you hardly take your lunch or dinner meals. I know blood suffices your entire body’s needs, but this food is of your choice, cooked according to your body requirements," Margaret said as she scolded him for always neglecting his meals.
"Mother forgot that I’ve been like this for years. This sudden concern isn’t something Mother should show now. What happened yesterday won’t be repeated again," Magnus proclaimed with assurance.
"Seems like Magnus won’t listen to us, Dear," Esmond stated, glancing at her. "Perhaps if Alora were to persuade him, he might be more inclined to listen," he suggested, hoping to find a solution.
"Alora is well aware of my dietary preferences. She understands that I find sustenance in blood, not in meals," Magnus clarified. He dabbed the napkin across his mouth, bringing a sudden awkward silence on the table.
"Brother Magnus doesn’t understand that we all were worried to death for him," Lillian spoke. "If the Head Witch didn’t arrive at time, he could have lost his life. What we all want is Brother Magnus to be healthy," she stated, her eyes reflecting that concern.
"Well, that didn’t happen. So, let’s not ruin the mood by thinking about it. Here I am, in your presence, healthier and stronger than before," Magnus replied, directing a smile at them.
"Alora, do you feel guilty for showing your kindness on a wrong person?" Lillian questioned, bringing a frown on Magnus’s forehead.
"Lily, let’s not fight over for something which was out of our control," Izaak intervened finally.
"You need to understand, Lily, where to open your mouth," Magnus sternly told her.
"Brother Magnus shall lecture his wife instead of me," Lillian retorted at him.
Their parents observed their kids with a sense of disappointment. Despite their age, they still bickered like young children.
"I am guilty for what I did," Alora finally spoke and she left her seat, bringing everyone’s attention to her. "I realize that even an apology may not suffice. But I promise you all, I will never again let my emotions cloud my judgment. The events of last night were more terrifying than any nightmare. I implore you all for forgiveness," she confessed, her head bowed in a display of remorse.
"Alora," Magnus murmured, his forehead creasing further with worry as he too, rose from his seat.
Esmond and Margaret exchanged a glance. "We harbor no resentment towards you, Alora. We believe that it was Magnus who was ill-prepared," Queen Margaret declared, her words intended to soothe Alora’s troubled heart.
"I beg to differ, Mother," Lillian interjected, her tone laced with bitterness. "Alora even extended her forgiveness to her own family. Who’s to say they won’t target her again, instigating another round of drama here? I am weary of Alora’s forgiving nature," she voiced her displeasure.
"Lillian, you need to rein in your temper. It’s not appropriate to speak ill of your sister-in-law. Everyone makes mistakes. Do you comprehend?" King Esmond found himself compelled to intervene, halting his daughter’s verbal onslaught against Alora. He was concerned that Magnus might lose his temper amidst this heated exchange.
"Sister Lillian, I will be careful from now onward. I promise. Please don’t be upset with me," Alora urged.
"Lily, just end it here," Alaric said. "Our sister-in-law had a difficult night. She’s begun to perceive the world through a wider lens. It’s important to remember that Alora never meant to jeopardize Magnus’s safety," he elucidated to her in a more gentle way.
Magnus felt like Lillian needed a scolding rather than this pampering.
"Alright, Alora. I will extend my trust to you once more. But be warned, this is the final time. If my brother is ever endangered due to your naivety, our conversations will cease," Lillian declared firmly.
Alora responded with a solemn nod of understanding.
"Is this a threat, Lily? I’ve never been able to comprehend your actions. You have no right to belittle my wife," Magnus retorted sharply, his words slicing through the tension.
"Father, look how Magnus talks to me. His manners have deteriorated. Being the youngest, he never fails to make me feel insignificant," Lillian lamented to their father, her voice tinged with hurt.
"Look at you. You can’t even handle a few sharp words. You talk the same way with others, Lily," Magnus argued. The siblings were far from backing down, their argument escalating once more.
Izaak could only shake his head in disbelief, realizing that this was likely to be an unending dispute between the two.
"Magnus!" Alora’s voice cut through the heated exchange. "You are Sister Lillian’s elder brother. Please, don’t address her in such a manner," she implored, her hand resting on his arm. "Remember, our royal parents are still in our presence. How can you disregard that?" She motioned for him to quieten down, her eyes pleading for peace.
Magnus rolled his eyes, conceding defeat, while a triumphant smile graced Lillian’s face.
"From what I’ve observed, only Alora has the power to quieten our son, Margaret," Esmond remarked, his laughter resonating throughout the room. Margaret couldn’t agree less to her husband.
The atmosphere instantly lightened, and a sense of joy permeated everyone’s hearts.
"Alora has smitten Magnus’s heart. He can hurt everyone, but not her," Izaak commented, smiling at both.
A wave of happiness washed over Alora as she took in the sight of their smiling faces. The joyous laughter, the shared mirth, the familial warmth - she wished to capture it all, to hold onto this precious moment that was so seldom seen.
"Now, let’s stop here. Alaric, see me in a while. Your mother and I have things to discuss with you related to your marriage. And you both," Esmond announced, his gaze shifting between Izaak and Lillian. "You two should also brace yourselves. The hour has come for you to get married too."
Lillian, however, voiced her dissent. "But Father, I haven’t fallen in love yet."
Esmond responded with a knowing smile, "The gentleman I have in mind for you, my dear, will undoubtedly capture your heart. Prepare yourself, Lillian. You are next in line for the marriage."
