Chapter 189: I only belittle you

"Your Highness, it’s time for you to retire," Zerah gently reminded Izaak.

"Summon Melody. I need to speak with her," Izaak instructed, tying the knots on his robe. Zerah bowed respectfully and left the chamber to fetch Melody.

Izaak slumped into the recliner, his mind racing with the earlier incident thoughts as he waited patiently for her arrival.

"Your Highness, Miss Melody is here," Zerah informed him.

"Leave," Izaak ordered Zerah, who promptly obeyed without question.

Melody, filled with apprehension, wondered if she would have to give blood to Izaak. Had she made a mistake by accepting his offer? The earlier events had truly terrified her, but she knew she had to remain strong-hearted and composed, ensuring no one could see through her facade.

Izaak finally stood up from the recliner, facing Melody. "What happened earlier must have scared you," he began. "It was a vampire attack on a human. But I want to thank you for acting swiftly to cover Elliot’s wound, thus preventing more blood loss," he said, his gratitude evident in his voice. Melody was taken aback by this unexpected gesture.

"I did my duty as a responsible citizen," Melody replied. "Is that gentleman fine now?" she queried, lifting her eyes, looking for a positive response.

"Yes, Elliot is fine now. But he is not a human anymore. We had to transform him into a vampire to keep him alive," Izaak explained.

"Oh," Melody responded, unsure of what more to say. "Your Highness, thank you for providing me work here. I didn’t get the chance to thank you properly earlier. I had dinner with the other servants, and it was delicious. The quarters are nice too—no water leakage," she added with a smile, trying to lighten the mood.

For Melody, three-time meals and a safe resting place were enough to make her happy. One dream she wanted to achieve for a long time was to have enough food and no leaking house to live in. Perhaps, in the palace, this modest dream of hers would be fulfilled for a long time time. She had already decided to work here for a long time.

Izaak felt Melody was a simple woman, who didn’t have many desires.

"You shall go back then. It’s already late." Izaak didn’t wish to keep her beside him. He was aware of how much Melody used to work daily and needed proper rest.

"Your Highness, what kind of work will I be doing from tomorrow? Will it be cleaning the chamber, doing the laundry, or both?" Melody asked with an inquisitive gaze.

"Work?" Izaak paused, realizing he hadn’t thought that far ahead. He had brought Melody to the palace because he wanted to keep her close and learn more about her.

"Umm... You will not do that, Melody. You need to work for me. Just look after my meals. I don’t eat much and mostly drink blood. You can even assist me in the morning when I’ve to get ready," Izaak stated, not giving her any hard work.

"I have never done such work before, but I will not give His Highness a chance to complain. I’ll work diligently, Your Highness," Melody said, smiling once more. She was enthusiastic about her work.

Izaak hummed in acknowledgment. "Very well. Zerah will escort you," he added.

Melody nodded and, after bidding him goodnight, she left his sight, feeling a mixture of anticipation and relief that her troublesome days would end now.

Izaak smiled for no reason and headed to bed, wanting to get some sleep.

Venus couldn’t fall asleep, troubled by what had happened to Elliot. Her insomnia had hit her again, so she decided to leave her chamber and take a stroll in the corridor.

As Venus stepped out, she found the entire corridor empty. Only the torchbearers hanging on the walls provided enough illumination, casting flickering shadows that danced along the stone walls.

The rain hadn’t stopped either, but the intensity had lowered. She stopped near a balustrade and placed her hand on the pillar next to it. "Who could prank on my brother? Whoever it was, he should be punished severely. My brother could have lost his life today," she murmured, anger was evident in her tone.

"What are you doing outside?"

A voice reached her ears, intimidating her for a moment until she met the eyes of this known man.

"Odin!" Venus exclaimed. "You scared me," she asserted.

"Strange! I thought you would make the others scared," Odin taunted.

Venus furrowed her brows together. She never liked the way Odin talked with her. She decided to go to the chamber when Odin stopped her.

"I am not finished yet, Miss Venus," Odin stood in front of her, causing her to take a step back.

"Why do you always linger around me? Do you think it’s appropriate to be near a woman who is a widow?" Venus questioned Odin, her tone tinged with annoyance and frustration.

Odin chuckled, his demeanor smug. "It’s necessary to keep an eye on a woman as vicious as you. Who knows what evil schemes you might concoct to get rid of your sister," he remarked, his words like a dagger piercing her heart.

Despite the pain, Venus remained silent. There was no point in trying to convince a man like Odin that she had changed; he would never believe her.

Odin, with his vampire senses, couldn’t easily discern others’ feelings. "Go back to your chamber. Don’t roam around freely if you don’t wish to become someone’s meal," he threatened Venus.

"You are evil," Venus muttered under her breath.

"Thank you for the compliment, Venus, but you are more evil than me," Odin returned the compliment with a smirk, his words dripping with sarcasm.

Venus clenched her fists, her anger boiling over. "No, I am not. Unlike you, I don’t belittle others," she retorted, her voice trembling and tears welling up in her eyes.

"Venus, I only belittle you. Because you deserve it. Do you understand?" Odin pressed his words at her, his tone tinged with disdain as he peered at her.

Unable to bear his words any longer, Venus averted her gaze from him, pushing him away before fleeing inside the chamber, her heart heavy with the unprecedented pain.
