Chapter 149: Don’t deserve to live

Magnus lowered the wine cup in his hand, glancing at his Father. "I didn’t wish to disturb Father at this hour, but it was necessary," He pronounced.

"My kids can see me at any time," Esmond asserted. "What is it that Prince Magnus wants to discuss with me at this hour?" He patiently waited for his son’s response.

"Father, I think Damien isn’t dead," Magnus replied.

Esmond frowned at his son’s answer. "What do you mean?" he asked.

"Why would Damien make a stupid mistake by coming to a ball and playing with the minds of the few vampires? I feel it was his intention to divert our minds from a bigger attack that he must be planning on us," Magnus explained.

King Esmond furrowed his brows close. He couldn’t either neglect Magnus’s claims.

"Perhaps he wishes to check what Alora can do. Damien is the one, who killed my aunt. She didn’t die naturally, Father. I want you to do something about it," Magnus asserted.

"Then, who was the vampire that night, who injured Izaak?" Esmond queried.

"That’s what confusing me, Father. I am unable to understand who was the vampire. But it wasn’t Damien who died. Something feels wrong about it," Magnus affirmed. He watched his father sipping the wine. He also brought the cup close to his mouth.

"I will look into it. Damien was indeed a tough vampire to handle. I myself put him into the casket, but he escaped it too. I wonder if learned the art of shapeshifing because that’s the only way Damien could fool us that night," Esmond stated.

Magnus too felt that Damien knew how to shapeshift. But it could be dangerous for them in the future. If they didn’t catch the real Damien, he could create a lot of trouble for them.

"I’ll tell you what we need to do tomorrow. I’m glad you decided to make me aware of this," Esmond stated with a gentle tone. Magnus had always refrained from discussing important matters with him and would solve them by himself. Perhaps he didn’t wish to disturb the King or he wasn’t interested in talking with him.

"Damien can’t be defeated with a single vampire. The experts’ help will be required to fulfill this task, Father," Magnus truthfully told him. He finished the remaining wine from the cup and set it on the table. "Thank you for listening to me. I shall take my leave." Magnus rose to his feet, ready to head out of the chamber.

"Magnus, I’m glad that you are here with us. Forgive your father for his past mistakes. I hope you do," Esmond stated, causing him to gaze at his father.

"Since everything was in the past, so it’s not good to keep complaints in my heart. I’m leading a happy life now and that’s what matters to me," Magnus affirmed with a tiny smile. He turned on the heels of his boots and finally left his father’s sight.

His eyes grew big in surprise as he found Alora and Izaak waiting for him in the corridor. "Why are you here?" He asked, watching Alora standing straight as she was leaning against the wall earlier.

"Alora was with him at the Northern Tower," said Izaak. "She told me you were with Father, so I brought her here," he added.

"Why does His Highness look troubled?" Alora asked as she approached him.

"Nothing," Magnus shook his head. "Are you well, Brother Izaak?" he inquired.

"Yes, I am."

The three started walking away from the King’s manor.

"Did you get any information related to Dylan?" Magnus inquired him.

"No. He disappeared in a thin air," Izaak answered.

"Hopefully, they find him soon. Dylan’s disappearance is weird. The vampires didn’t seem from this kingdom. Don’t you think?" Magnus quipped.

"I do think that. However, let’s wait for the confirmation," Izaak asserted. As the two brothers talked Alora keenly listened to their conversation.

"Alora, there’s a fair in the capital. Why don’t you go out with Magnus?" Izaak suggested them.

"A fair? Oh, yes! Now, I can even go to such events," Alora said excitedly. She held Magnus’s arm, telling him they should definitely go to this fair. "I heard even firecrackers are burned in the fair and many wonderful street dishes are made." The shimmer in her eyes showed her excitement.

"Sure. We can go there. However, it may tire you out. Tomorrow is your first day in the Vampire Council," Magnus advised her. He felt Alora should take plenty of rest instead of exhausting herself in such activities.

Alora pouted her lips, but she didn’t utter a single word. It was true that she couldn’t tire herself and get lethargic tomorrow.

"Fairs keep happening in the capital. Alora can go in some other fair," Izaak opined. Suddenly, they heard the rain pattering on the roof of the palace.

"Oh, the sky was clear earlier," Alora murmured.

"Rainy season is here. Clouds can appear anytime," Izaak stated. He found Magnus was quiet, which made him wonder if something was going on with Magnus. He thought to depart as he felt his brother might need only his wife’s presence now. Izaak excused himself, leaving both of them in the corridor.

Alora ran toward the pillar as she looked outside. She extended her hand out and the water droplets landed on her palm.

"You may catch a cold, Alora," Magnus said as she approached her. He stopped beside her and looked at her face. She was enjoying the normal rain. Her pure, bright smile mesmerized him and his worries suddenly came to an end.

Alora turned her head to look at him. "Magnus, if anything is bothering you, then you can confide in me," she asserted and pulled her hand back.

"How do you know something is bothering me?" Magnus inquired.

"Your eyes and face say it. I’m your wife and it’s easy to know when you are sad or happy," Alora remarked.

"Something dark is lurking over us. I’m unable to understand what is it. It’s my intuition. Nothing more," Magnus stated.

Alora held his hands as she caressed them tenderly. "Because you think too much, you feel too much."

"Is that so?" Magnus raised his brow.

"Yes. When we think a lot, our anxiety keeps growing," Alora replied.

"Then, what should I do to stop this feeling?" Magnus asked.

"Umm... Not to overthink. Also, if there’s something evil around us, then we will fight it together. Don’t feel stressed because of it," Alora stated. She moved her right hand to his cheek and stroked it. "Now, smile and enjoy this rain with me," she added.

"You mean we should play in the rain!?" Magnus remarked.

"Oh, can we?"

"No. You’ll catch cold."

He moved his hand to her other shoulder and side-hugged her. She tilted her head to look at him and planted a soft kiss on his cheek. Looking away, she smiled and kept enjoying the rain with him.

Venus looked at the gown that Alora had sent for her. She found it pretty and decided to wear it on a special occasion, perhaps, on her birthday. She put it in the cupboard and went to the window to watch the rain fall.

Sitting on the platform, Venus gazed out, feeling her life had suddenly become dull. She wanted to start fresh, however, she didn’t know how to do it. Last night when she went outside her parents’ room, Venus heard how people started calling names of her. In her jealousy, she ended up destroying her own life.

"If I keep seated at home, these thoughts will keep haunting me. But if I go out, I may not be perceived well by the others. My parents and brother may have to hear the taunts from the people," Venus murmured.

The sudden knock on the door grabbed her attention and she tilted her head. Asking to come into the person on the side of the door, Venus found out it was her brother.

"Venus, I have gotten an invitation for the ball for this week," Elliot informed her. "You should join me there," he added.

"I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to go with you. You should better go by yourself. You may find a suitor for you," Venus stated with a smile.

"It’s a ball, where even vampires and werewolves will be present. Such a ball happens twice a year as you know," Elliot asserted.

"Then, I should definitely not go," Venus stated firmly.

Elliot sighed as he sat on the chair close to the bed. "Venus, you need not to fear anything. You got your punishment already. Alora has forgiven you and so did the she-wolf. Eugene was no good. He also lied to us just to hide his affair later." He told Venus that people would not let her live if she kept thinking about all those things.

"Elliot, I’m scared." Venus lowered her eyes as she fiddled with her fingers. She licked her lips as tears emerged in her eyes, "I don’t think I even deserve to live anymore."
