Chapter 210: Chapter 210: Days of Intimate Closeness Still Vivid in Memory, but Suddenly Going On a Trip with Another Woman?
Delphine picked up the stack of photos and carefully leafed through them. The pictures showed Ignatius Leclair with a young woman exuding elegance and purity. The two were touring their alma mater, strolling along the Thames River, and finally, traveling to Switzerland together.
"Afraid you wouldn’t believe me, I specifically asked a friend to take snapshots of the local newspapers and had them developed for you." Bessie Leclair’s face lit up with contemptuous arrogance as she scoffed, "My older brother and Melody Cloud have known each other since childhood. They’re perfectly matched in background and upbringing, not to mention they’re schoolmates. Their trip to Switzerland must’ve been to meet each other’s families. Oh, by the way, Melody Cloud is the eldest daughter of the second most prominent family in Southeast Asia, the Cloud Family.
And who do you think you are? A low-class piece of trash who doesn’t even deserve a seat at the table. When given respect, you throw it away. If you had any sense, you’d pack up and get the hell out of here."
Delphine raised her eyes, gazing at Bessie’s overly done-up, garishly mature face. Coldly, she replied, "Of course, I don’t deserve a place at the table. But I hope from now on, when you see me, you’ll step aside to avoid compromising your lofty status."
"What are you being so cocky about? We’ve kicked you out once before, and we can do it again," Bessie snapped, enraged, grabbing the photos and flinging them directly at Delphine’s face.
"What’s all this yelling about? And why are you laying hands on someone?" Beatrice Carter, hearing the commotion, emerged from the side room. She caught the sight of photos scattered across the floor and immediately shrieked, "A young lady hitting people? Do you realize you’ve brought disgrace to your parents with this behavior?"
"At least I’m not some homewrecking mistress dragging a brat along to cling to someone else’s household," Bessie retorted with venom, throwing cold, sarcastic jabs as Beatrice entered the fray.
The two instantly devolved into another shouting match.
Delphine, expressionless, bent down to pick up every last photo on the floor. She carefully put them back together, then quietly retreated into the side room with two frightened, mewling kittens in her arms.
Having grown tired of the hardships of living outside, and still yearning for Isaac Leclair, Beatrice had secretly returned a few days earlier. Her return had sparked several heated battles with Bessie since.
The Leclair family estate was a lively chaos these days, with Ignatius absent and Stone Leclair indifferent to the drama unfolding under his roof.
Delphine placed the photos on her bedside table, looking at the man in the pictures, his handsome features sharp and his expression stern.
The faint scent of pine still lingered in the bedroom. She thought of the days and nights when that man had held her in this very room, whispering sweet nothings. Yet, in the blink of an eye, he could be off making intimate memories with another woman. A chill crossed her eyes as she reached out and hurled the vintage night lamp Ignatius cherished off the balcony, shattering it to pieces below.
In the garden downstairs, Bessie and Beatrice, still in the middle of their argument, were startled out of their wits by the falling lamp. When they looked up to see Delphine standing on the balcony with an icy, unreadable expression, they abruptly fell silent, like hens that had been struck dumb.
For the next couple of days, Delphine lived in rare peace. Not only did Bessie avoid her, even Beatrice made detours to stay out of her way, fearful that the emotional blow Delphine had suffered might drive her to act out unpredictably.
Once Delphine finished reading through the novel *The Official Daughter’s Wish,* Kyla Zamora finally brought news from the production team.
"Delphine, are you free in the next couple of days? Director Gus wants to meet with you," Kyla said excitedly. "If everything goes well at this meeting, the lead role is almost certainly yours."
"Just like that? No audition?" Delphine asked, a bit surprised.
Kyla rolled her eyes, exasperated, and wished she could knock some sense into Delphine’s seemingly oblivious head. She muttered on and on, "Delphine Carter, do you really not realize it? You’re one of the hottest rising stars right now! From *Elysium* to *Twin Flowers,* then to the award-contending *Stories of Green River,* your talent speaks for itself. This meeting is a mere formality. If you hadn’t been taking so many breaks lounging around, you’d be ten times more famous by now."
"Alright, set it up then," Delphine said obediently, like a chick pecking at rice after the scolding.
"Tomorrow night at eight, at Cloud Summit," Kyla said.
Delphine noted that the venue, Cloud Summit, was part of the Leclair family’s properties and nodded in agreement.
