Chapter 153: Chapter 153 I am very interested in Miss Si’s past.
The night was deep and heavy, and the ground lights at Squire Manor illuminated the shadowy depths of the verdant trees.
Ignatius Leclair stood in the night breeze, his tall and upright figure blending seamlessly with the darkness, while the daunting presence of his subordinate, Six, lingered behind him.
It was only after a long moment that the grand gates of the Squire Family creaked open.
"Mr. Leclair, our Miss requests your presence."
Ignatius moved slightly before stepping into the Squire Family’s drawing room, his expression steely and imposing.
Leah descended from upstairs, wearing a provocative lace nightgown casually draped with a silk robe. Standing at the spiral staircase, her cold and strikingly beautiful face displayed blatant impatience.
Ignatius scanned the room with his gaze but did not see Delphine, causing his deep, narrow eyes to narrow further.
"Miss Squire, I’m here to take Delphine home." His voice was cold and unyielding, like iron striking the ground.
Leah’s enchanting eyes swept over Ignatius, evaluating him from head to toe. Indeed, he carried himself with a certain air of predatory dominance.
"Mr. Leclair, you disturb others’ peaceful nights just to demand something of me? Delphine isn’t here. I’m afraid you’ve come to the wrong place."
Having been roused from sleep, Leah was already annoyed, let alone by the fact that her unwelcome visitor was Ignatius. She had witnessed Delphine during her most difficult times; her feelings toward Ignatius were nothing short of disdain.
"No need to trouble yourself, Miss Squire. I’ll go upstairs to bring Delphine back. You can go back to sleep." Ignatius’s voice was heavy and deliberate.
Having argued with Delphine since morning, Ignatius’s suppressed frustration and anger had simmered to the surface, making his tone distinctly lacking in courtesy.
Seeing him act so arrogantly on her own territory, Leah couldn’t help but wonder just how domineering he could be toward someone as unassuming as Delphine. Her finely sculpted features tightened as she sneered coldly.
"Mr. Leclair, are you planning to trespass? While the Squire Family may still be establishing its roots in the South Sea, we are not so easily bullied without fighting back."
Enemies of her family were as numerous as fish swimming downstream; there was no way the manor wasn’t well-guarded by loyal confidants. For Ignatius to barge in with just one subordinate was nothing short of treating them with utter disregard.
Seeing her unrelenting demeanor, Ignatius glanced at his wristwatch. His face darkened further as he spoke in a detached tone, "Miss Squire, Delphine had a small misunderstanding with me today, which is why she stayed here for the night."
"I also heard that you only reunited with your brother seven years ago, and at the time, you were gravely injured and had suffered neurological damage, losing many of your memories. I find your past quite... intriguing."
Leah’s expression shifted dramatically. The cold elegance of her face paled slightly as she gritted out through clenched teeth, "Are you threatening me?"
Ignatius’s lips curved into a faint smirk, his smile icy and distant. Everyone has a weakness, and he wouldn’t have come to get Delphine without a plan.
"Leah." A voice soft as a wounded animal’s reached out.
Delphine stood at the corner of the staircase. Seeing Leah cornered with her most sensitive vulnerability exposed, her face pale, Delphine quietly said, "I’ll head back tonight. We can talk another time."
Ignatius looked up and saw her clad only in a thin nightgown, her delicate, palm-sized face clean and bare. She appeared even smaller and more fragile, and the irritation that had plagued him all day instantly dissipated. Without a word, he ascended the stairs.
The man reached out and gently brushed her soft cheek, his deep voice murmuring, "You’re a little cold. Let me take you home."
Delphine turned her face away. The man had already picked her up effortlessly and carried her outside.
Leah was about to spit out a sarcastic remark at seeing the man’s overwhelming and imperious manner, but then she caught sight of Delphine burying herself completely in his arms, her thin body trembling slightly like a small, fragile animal. The words abruptly caught in her throat as her fist clenched tightly.
