Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Movie Star Charles Taylor Actually Acts with Her
Delphine had already read through the script on her way there. The supporting role she was auditioning for didn’t have many scenes. She would portray Princess Emerald Pearl, hailing from a mysterious and isolated kingdom, who was born with no heart. To save her life, her mother had used the kingdom’s treasured artifact, the Agarwood Jewel, as the princess’s heart.
When Emerald Pearl grew up, she met the silent and reserved slave, Banquet, and fell in love with him. Who would have thought that Banquet was actually the scion of the Nine Provinces nobility? To save the one he loved, he disguised himself as a slave and came to steal the Agarwood Jewel.
In the end, the princess sacrificed her heart for him, never revealing to Banquet that she was the Agarwood Jewel itself, and the Agarwood Jewel was her.
The story was deeply sorrowful. In the final scene, Emerald Pearl watched her beloved leave amidst a snowstorm, dying alone in the snow, her body ultimately buried by the falling whiteness.
"If you’re ready, you can go audition now," Joy said.
Coincidentally, the crew had just wrapped up shooting a scene, and both the director and actors were taking a break.
Delphine nodded, walking to the camera at an unhurried pace. She swiftly immersed herself in the role, transforming into Princess Emerald Pearl, betrayed by her beloved, wearing plain white robes while standing atop the altar. Her breathtaking beauty appeared cold and detached, yet utterly transcendent.
"You came for the Agarwood Jewel?" Her voice was as frigid as snow-capped mountains.
Opposite her stood Charles Taylor, the renowned Best Actor who hadn’t gone off to rest yet. The onlookers were wide-eyed with astonishment, momentarily frozen, their movements stalled.
This rookie actress was acting opposite the illustrious Best Actor? Was she insane?
Transformed into Emerald Pearl, the young woman’s face flashed with a trace of pain, which she quickly concealed. Step by step, she moved closer to the character played by Charles Taylor — Banquet — staring at the handsome young man trapped in conflict. Then, she bent down, reached out to touch his face, and sighed softly, "Would it really be so bad to stay here?"
"We could go to the snow mountains together to see the Cangwu trees, to the boundless sea to find the Merfolk Pearl, brew tea in springtime, and listen to the cicadas in summer."
The audience below, including the director, was stunned. She... she touched Charles Taylor’s face?
Oh my gosh!
"Emerald Pearl, I’ve come here for the Agarwood Jewel," Charles Taylor spoke in a low voice, delivering the dialogue from the script as he gazed at her.
Someone below audibly gasped. Holy crap, Charles Taylor is actually engaging in a scene with this rookie actress! Jason bit the corner of his shirt out of excitement, cheering her on silently.
Delphine didn’t react at all. In this moment, she was still Emerald Pearl, staring fixedly at her beloved before closing her eyes. After a fleeting moment of despair, she flicked her sleeve coldly and said, "Go, then."
Not another word was uttered. The atmosphere below turned tense as everyone held their breath. This was Charles Taylor — his presence alone was overwhelming. Yet this newcomer, acting under such pressure, remained entirely unaffected, delivering an even stronger aura. She embodied Emerald Pearl’s struggle between despair and undying love.
"Cut!" the director suddenly exclaimed, his eyes brimming with excitement. "What’s your name?"
Delphine stepped out of character, replying calmly, "My name is Delphine Carter."
Delphine noticed Jason had already gone off to chat with the director and only then stepped off the stage, politely thanking Charles Taylor. Without a doubt, she had benefited immensely from acting alongside the Best Actor; his presence had amplified the impact of the scene.
"No need to thank me, it was nothing," Charles Taylor replied with a reserved smile. "You’re very clever."
Delphine offered a slight smile but chose not to say anything further.
Soon, Jason returned energetically, pulling Delphine aside and exclaiming, "You were amazing, Delphine! You landed the supporting role! By the way, how did you come up with the idea to leverage Charles Taylor like that? Pure genius!"
Delphine finally allowed herself to exhale in relief. Spotting Charles Taylor earlier had triggered her sudden insight. She hadn’t expected him to actually agree to act with her.
"Filming starts tomorrow, you’re superb," Jason said, nearly embracing her in his excitement, before scampering off to arrange a celebratory dinner with Joy, his partner. Delphine stood there dumbfounded, watching as her manager, blinded by love, quickly abandoned her, leaving her to quietly return to Lyric Mansion.
