Chapter 592: Chapter 258: Fishing for Salmon
Soon, the fishing boat departed from the small dock, heading upstream.
Lin Yang’s drone took off, and the live broadcast officially began.
Exploring Russia’s Kubi River, he had given his live broadcast a fitting room name which kicked off shortly.
"Finally started broadcasting again, good morning, host."
"Has Master Lin just set out? Have you caught any fish yet?"
Lin Yang shook his head, "Good morning, everyone, I’m Lin Yang. We just finished breakfast and boarded the boat from the camp’s small dock. We are heading upstream on a tributary of the Kubi River toward the upstream marker. Next to me, steering the boat is Uncle Victor. Uncle, why don’t you say hello to the friends in the live room?"
Uncle Victor wasn’t shy at all, waving naturally and greeting everyone.
"Wow, this Russian old man is pretty easy-going. He understands Chinese?"
"Hello, Uncle."
"What fish are we targeting today, host?"
Lin Yang smiled, "The Kubi River region is rather rich in fish species. Today, we’ll just wander around, and whatever fish we catch, that’s what we’ll catch. I just heard from Captain Uncle that it’s the dry season now, and the water level is quite low, so there probably won’t be any large fish. My goal is simple, catching a few fresh ones for tasting would be enough."
"Zen fishing, the host’s level has increased again."
"Haha, true Zen fishing."
.....
After departing from the campsite, the fishing boat traveled for about half an hour. Lin Yang then noticed the water before him suddenly opened up as the tributary merged with the main river channel, expanding from a few dozen meters wide to almost a hundred meters wide instantly.
"The place where the rivers meet has faster currents, and many fish that like clean water enjoy swimming around here, you might want to give it a try." Uncle Victor maneuvered the boat to a shallow area and stopped.
Lin Yang nodded, "Ok!"
"We have now reached near the fork of Kubi River’s main channel, and the current here is quite strong. I’ll start by casting a few casts with a more reflective leech lure."
Greeting everyone, he retrieved a lightweight lure rod from the equipment box. He hadn’t planned on targeting very large fish, so a lightweight lure rod would do.
After checking his equipment to ensure everything was fine, Lin Yang chose a spot nearby with strong currents for his trial fishing.
He stiffened his arm, then powered through. The leech lure traced a silvery arc in the air, landing near his target spot after a few seconds.
"Wow, the host’s casting has improved again. Can a small lure be cast that far?"
"I’ve recorded it, watching the host casting is so satisfying, I’ll follow suit and learn from it later."
"How can such a small bait be cast that far? Master Lin, why don’t you teach us all about it.?"
After the first cast, Lin Yang didn’t immediately check the public channel; instead, he slightly raised the tip of his rod about thirty degrees to feel the water and gently reeled in.
Casting in flowing water is completely different from still water, as the current affects the movement of the lure, which demands good control and judgment from the angler.
After quickly adapting, Lin Yang felt the lure had hit bottom, he then started rhythmically reeling in, manipulating the lure to pause and accelerate in its swimming motion.
To his surprise, although this area looked large on the surface, the water was quite shallow. By the time it took for the lure to hit the bottom, he estimated the depth was no more than a meter or so — a person could step in, and the water might just reach the waist, and this was nearly at the center of the river.
After a simple first cast without any bites, Lin Yang slightly changed his position for the next cast, controlling the lure at a depth approximately ten to twenty centimeters off the bottom as he continued his search.
No sooner had he reeled in a few meters in the second cast than he felt a tug on the tip of his rod, signaling a fish strike!
Lin Yang confirmed that the fish had swallowed the lure before striking it with a slight delay.
In the flowing water, the fish’s strength was significantly greater than in static water. With the first fish, Lin Yang felt a good resistance, suggesting it wasn’t too small.
"Got one, feels good!"
Lin Yang called out, starting to adeptly adjust the drag, then sensed the direction of the fish’s force and controlled the rod to reel it in, bringing the fish closer in less than a minute.
It was a slender fish, elongated, slightly laterally compressed with a somewhat flattened head and a large mouth with fine but sharp teeth visible.
The scales were small; the back was green-brown while the sides and belly were silvery white, with many black spots on the dorsal side of the head.
As soon as the fish was near the boat, he identified its species — Taimen!
"Look, everyone, we’re lucky today. The first fish upon arriving in Russia is a Taimen! This one’s not too large, about four or five pounds, but it’s quite strong, feels pretty good."
As Lin Yang spoke, he unhooked a fish controller from his waist, bent down to skillfully hook it onto the fish’s mouth to secure it, and with a slight effort of his arm, he lifted the fish out of the water.
Taimen predominantly live in fast-flowing streams, overwintering in deeper bodies of water like major river channels and lakes during winter. In spring, they migrate upstream to spawn in streams. After August, they move towards the main river channels.
Taimen are voracious feeders and are among the most ferocious freshwater fish.
