The Throne Is Mine -
Chapter 78
Chapter 78: Chapter 78
"I think your people might like me a little bit more if they found out I wasn’t the one who killed their king," Killian playfully smiled while Ameli and Cyrus glared at him. "If not me, who do you think they will point fingers at for the king’s death? The new king? The court ministers? I wonder who could be the culprit."
"Please shut your trap," Amelia muttered, tempted to throw something at him but she refrained from doing so. He was being playful but he was dangerous. Still, she understood why her first instinct in the past was to throw her shoe at his face. "We are not in the privacy of our rooms to talk about such a thing."
"I am well aware of our environment, princess. There is no one listening to us although I think your cousin might be trying to hear us all the way in his carriage behind us. Besides, no one would believe anyone other than me killed the king. The timing is too coincidental," Killian reassured her. "However, the way I killed him was so weak for a man like me."
"I’m going to kick you out of my carriage if you do not shut up. I don’t care who, what, or how strong you are. Can we please talk about something else-"
"Some of your court ministers were discussing the king’s death late in the night. Making sure you are safe isn’t the only reason I fly around late at night. I’m keeping an eye on the pigs here. It appears they wish to get you to sacrifice yourself for the sake of this kingdom. Should I stop talking now?" Killian grinned.
Amelia rolled her eyes, annoyed he had piqued her curiosity. "Please continue speaking. How do they want me to sacrifice my life and what does it have to do with my father’s death?"
"They’ve lost a king who let them do as they wanted and hid their crimes. They do not wish to have a truce with the north as they are afraid they cannot do as they want if the new king must listen to the north. So, the three of them have come up with the bright idea to kill me and avenge your father. Your cousin wouldn’t have your grandmother over his shoulder if I were not alive."
"And it would be easier for the court ministers to control Fraser. My father was a fool but he always kept the court ministers in check and had them listening to his every word. Fraser wouldn’t be able to outsmart the sly foxes who have been in the castle for years. He’s excited to be king but unless he gets some command sense, they will toy with him. What did you hear about me?" Amelia asked as she was more curious about that than what would become of Fraser.
"What better way to kill me than using the woman who will share my bed in the future? Once we return to the north you would risk your life by killing me when we are alone. They have not found the way they would kill me yet. Foolish humans," Killian chuckled. "If only they knew poisons could not hurt me and I doubt you would be able to stab me to death."
"Even if I were to magically you in the north, your people would kill me in the vilest way possible in the end. These old dogs," Amelia couldn’t help but laugh.
Why wasn’t the fact she was giving up everything here and going to the north enough? It wasn’t easy for her to leave the only home she ever knew to form a truce. Especially after the many times, she stated she would rather die than be sent off to another kingdom to end wars. Wasn’t her sacrifice enough? Now they wanted her to ruin a truce that would be beneficial for their kingdom and have her die.
"Hahahaha," Amelia continued to laugh until tears fell from her eyes. "What a load of bullshit," she cursed, ignoring the fact it was unladylike to do in front of a guest who was a king at that. "What should I do?" She ran her thumb against her bottom lip as she thought about the best way to get rid of this new problem.
"Glad to know you wouldn’t consider killing me," said Killian.
"That’s because I am not a fool. There is no way for me to kill you and I do not want to ruin the chance for us to have a truce. After a failed attempt of me trying to kill you, you would just leave the north and massacre everyone in the castle as you planned to do. Am I right?" Amelia questioned and received a nod from Killian.
"It’s so obvious. Why am I the only one thinking with common sense? Yet they claimed I wasn’t fit to be around for important meetings. Are you going to do something about them plotting on your life?" Amelia asked Killian.
"Why should I?" He shrugged his shoulders.
"Why? Someone is plotting on your life and you say why?"
"Princess, I do not concern myself with measly humans trying to kill me. They won’t succeed and will find themselves dragged down into the underworld where I should have them tortured. You, on the other hand, should be concerned about them approaching you with this bright idea. You’ve found yourself in a predicament but it will surely entertain me," Killian smiled, awaiting the impending conflict between Amelia and the court ministers.
Amelia stared at Killian in disbelief at how this could be entertaining when it was his life being discussed. She started to conclude that demons might be weird creatures. At least their king from what she witnessed so far. Cyrus was normal while there was clearly something wrong with Killian.
"Each time I speak with you, you are far from what I expect the war demon to be like," said Amelia.
She didn’t want to see the deadly side of him but she felt unable to build a connection with the man she was going to marry because she knew he was hiding what he was really like from her. To appear as a nice man as he claimed. It was unfair when she was completely herself in front of Killian.
"Without killing anyone, please be yourself," she requested. "Don’t force yourself to do things to appear nice in front of me. I hate two-faced people who hide who they truly are."
"That’s a hard request for me to follow, princess. When I am not fighting this is how I am. I am normally quite laid back when I have nothing. I’m sorry I cannot always be the evil person everyone wants me to be," Killian replied. Outside of being kinder with his words around Amelia, he was being himself around her but that seemed to be pointless.
Amelia felt bad for what she said now that he said he was being himself. "I’m sorry. It’s just weird for someone I’ve always heard these dangerous tales about to be like this. I never expected that if we were to meet again, we would calmly be conversing like this. You scared the heck out of me the first time we met."
"Hard to tell. Unlike many men who have stood before me, you kept yourself together and got away safely with your guard. As I have said, you intrigued me that day. That is why I have proposed to us being married and I have been myself around you because I want to get to know the interesting human before me. If I bring cruel will make you feel more comfortable the-"
"No," Amelia interrupted him. She did not want him to be cruel though that was how she pictured he would be and prepared herself to deal with him like that. "Continue as you are. I should toss everything that I heard about you out the window and get to know you. After all of this is done, we should spend time together. I truly hope our kingdoms are no longer enemies and this marriage can work."
"Between you and I, this marriage will not fail. It’s the foolish people on the outside we have to worry about. Instead of your cousin showing me around, how about you take me to places you enjoy? You ended your trip with your grandmother early that day. Take me to enjoy what you were going to eat. Now, wake me up when we arrive in town," Killian closed his eyes. "It is annoying to ride in a carriage instead of using a horse or flying."
"I will," Amelia smiled. Strangely enough, she did see the marriage between her and Killian working well in the future. They both cared about their people and listened to what each other had to say. ’No wonder grandmother thought Killian and I would be a match,’ she thought.
Just as Killian would have to show his people why she would be a good queen, Amelia would show her people why this union was needed.
