The Throne Is Mine
Chapter 76

Chapter 76: Chapter 76

’I don’t trust you," Amelia thought. Killian being way too nice did not feel right. Maybe if he was a little bit mean, she would find this situation to be a little bit more normal.

"Was everyone angry that the trip into town had to be postponed because I was sleeping? It’s not too late to do it now. I want people to know about the future of this kingdom soon. They must be scared out of their mind worrying about what happened inside the castle. Has any announcement been made at all?" Amelia asked Killian as he would have to approve of anything being sent out regarding the north.

"No, but they are aware that my people held your castle captive. That is all. I’ve been informed a few people were lining up at the gates yelling for answers. If you wish to continue as planned, we can travel to the town after you have eaten. I have nothing else to do today and I would like to see what the Blackwell towns are like."

"Right. You wouldn’t have time to explore when you were plotting to kill everyone in the castle. If you are going around town, you need to look less terrifying so that people won’t cry because I am marrying a man like you. You are their enemy but you should not look as the rumors portray you. How can I fix that?" Amelia inspected his appearance.

When she announced that the north and Blackwells will form a truce, she did not want Killian to look as dangerous as he always did. Looking at him, she realized it wasn’t an easy task. Everything about Killian screamed danger from his face, clothes, and his weapons. It was as if he was born to be nothing else but terrifying.

"Let’s forget about that. I can’t make you not look dangerous," Amelia gave up.

"Good because I don’t wish to change my appearance for your people. They should know to fear me so that way they won’t offend me in the future. I am a dangerous man after all."

"You should not say something like that to the person who plans to marry you. How can you call yourself dangerous when you have been trying to appear nice in front of me? Make up your mind on how you want me to view you," said Amelia.

"You misunderstood me, princess. I want everyone but you to fear me. You should see the good I have inside. I don’t need my wife to see me as dangerous either. I’ve read I should be loving-"

"Read?" Amelia interrupted Killian as that one word stuck out to her. "Have you been reading about being a good husband?"

"I’ve never been married before and human feelings are different from demons. I’ve been getting advice from books on how to treat you. Haven’t I been doing a good job?" Killian wondered if he should find more books. "I am trying to understand human emotions."

"All this time you have been using a book to make me see you as a good person. Where on earth did you even find such a book? I’d like to know who the hell was reading it because it certainly was not my father," Amelia muttered.

"In one of your libraries," Killian replied.

"That is odd. Please don’t read any books about being a good person or husband. Let it come naturally so it doesn’t feel forced or weird like it does now. I get that because of who you are you might need help understanding what normal people like I need when it comes to romance but I rather you get to know me and see for yourself. Maybe we’ll see that humans and demons aren’t that different when it comes to marriage."

Killian chuckled as demons and humans were different when it came to this kind of thing. "In the north, I would go on a hunt to bring you back the biggest creature I could find to make you accept my hand in marriage, or maybe I would venture into the underworld and bring you back a gift. If the gift has a curse the woman might like it even more. Should I do that instead of reading a book?"

Amelia didn’t see how any of those things could lead to two people liking each other but these were demons they were talking about. "Please read the books and for the record, I do not enjoy anything that is cursed."

"I will keep that in mind. I will also stop reading the book and watch you. There are books in the north about your kind but you are more entertaining than any human I have met in many years so I doubt the books will understand someone like you. That is why I wish to keep you by my side," Killian toyed with a strand of her hair.

He played with her hair partially because it amused him and it would piss off the man walking behind them.

Amelia swatted Killian’s hand away before he could mess up Gina’s hard work. "Please do not ruin my hair. My friend spent a long time brushing and putting it together. We cannot all wake up and have our hair looking wonderful," she snuck a glance at his hair tied perfectly into a ponytail.

Wasn’t it unfair for him to be good-looking and have better hair than her? While Gina spent hours taking care of her hair, why was Killian able to walk around with such healthy hair when he most likely did nothing with it?

Out of the blue, Killian took Amelia’s hand and placed it to touch his hair. "You were staring at my hair so much. If you wanted to touch it, you only needed to do it. I wouldn’t stop you."

Her mind was telling her to remove her hand but she was curious about Killian’s hair. "How is it so soft? I was certain it would be a little bit rough," she commented as she ran her fingers through his hair. "Is there someone who cares for your hair or do you do it yourself? I need your secrets."

"I do not need for anyone to take care of my hair. I simply brush it into a ponytail in the morning and go on my way," Killian replied, completely enjoying the surprised expression on Amelia’s face. He had once seen how much women needed to pamper themselves but he never did such a thing.

"That is not fair. Excuse me," Amelia cleared her throat and removed her hand from his hair after realizing they were not that close to be doing this. She noted how the Blackwell servants were looking at her weirdly.

In their eyes, Killian was to be her husband but they viewed him as the man who killed the king and many of the guards who had family among the servants. For their princess to be causally caressing Killian’s hair, they found it odd. They might wonder if Amelia forgot about everything that happened because of the way Killian looked.

’If they knew I was the one who killed my father, they wouldn’t be so confused by me not being angry with Killian. Why is it so surprising that I am not angry with Killian when I have always hated my father? If Killian had killed my father, I might have cried and thanked him for freeing me," Amelia thought to herself. ’Still, I shouldn’t appear so close to Killian.’

Amelia stepped to the side to have some space between her and Killian as he walked her to the kitchen.

Killian noticed this and wasn’t offended but he had to ask," Is it wrong for you to get to know your future husband? How long will you put up the act like you are not trying to understand me, I wonder."

"What?" Amelia looked up at Killian due to their height difference.

"The only reason I did not slaughter the people here is because of our engagement. You are also sacrificing your happiness to save your people. They have no right to judge you for touching my hair or comfortably walking beside me. It is also not easy for me to suddenly not view your people as my enemies after all that your side has done. Think about that princess. I’ll see you after you have eaten," Killian walked off in another direction.

Amelia stood still thinking about his words. Of course, she understood this was difficult for him. He was leaving the people who killed and enslaved his people untouched because of their marriage. He had the advantage where he could have killed everyone here and dragged her to the north as a captive but he changed his plans and was now marrying her.

"I’m just trying to please everyone," Amelia sighed.

She was trying to get to know the man she would soon marry and at the same time, she was thinking about how her people would view her being around Killian. That was why she wanted the announcement to be made soon and for Killian to start mingling among her people. Those who lost sons would hate him but she needed the Blackwells to start accepting the north.

No matter how much her people might judge her, she will make them accept Killian.
