The Throne Is Mine

Chapter 257: [Bonus Chapter] Chapter 257

Fraser dreaded having to go to dinner. Not because he would have to look at his options for a bride, but for the sole fact that Margaret would be there. He wished to go against what his mother said and just have the woman, whom he once thought of as his grandmother, killed since she was out to get him.

"Where is my grandfather? I have not seen him since he was outsmarted by Margaret. Do you think he is ashamed that his plan didn’t last? I should have him killed for poisoning me for nothing," Fraser muttered. He went through all of that pain just for Margaret to still be here.

Beth did find it odd that Cedric was nowhere to be seen. She didn’t think he could be hiding since Margaret outsmarted him. "Last I saw him, he looked sick."

"Great. Now, when I need him most, he has fallen ill. We should send him out of the castle too. He is old and useless. Get his allies to just follow me," said Fraser. He was over his grandfather thinking he pulled his strings. No one controlled the king.

"He should be at dinner, so you should speak with him afterwards to learn what he has been up to. I think he might be angered by the fact that Margaret made a fool of him, so he is plotting to get rid of her again. Let the two of them fight it out. You did well today with the donations you sent out to the people," Beth complimented Fraser, despite the fact that it was her idea. She didn’t mind that Fraser got the credit. She would have her turn one day.

’That was a waste of my money,’ Fraser thought, clenching his fist. He hoped that with this sacrifice, the people would keep quiet for a while. He was forced once more to reward those who lost sons when Killian came down from the north.

Beth knew that Fraser wasn’t happy with it, but it made him look good in the eyes of the people. After the incident with him being poisoned, he started to reward them. The doubts about Fraser as king had started to fade away. "Stand up straight," she instructed Fraser as they entered the dining hall.

Beth expected to be met by young ladies and their fathers standing around, but there was no one besides Margaret and Annabelle. Not even Cedric was present. "What is happening here?" Beth picked up her pace and looked around the hall, expecting the young women to come out of hiding. "We are meant to have guests."

"Oh, those young women? I sent them away," Margaret replied, pulling apart a piece of bread from the loaf so she could have a snack before the food was here.

"What? You had no place to send them away-"

"One of my priests sensed evil amongst those young women, so to protect the king, I had them sent away. I will inspect their families one by one to see what was sensed. The last thing we need is a young lady with evilness around her picked to marry the king," said Margaret. She was yet to look up at Beth, and Fraser who would be fuming.

Fraser didn’t mind that the young women were sent away. Margaret gave him extra time to not think about marriage. He left his mother’s side and went to the head of the table, which was now his spot. "Come sit down, mother. We will deal with it tomorrow. We cannot have the young ladies and their escorts turn around to come back to the castle. I will send an apology to their families."

Beth turned to Fraser, who must have lost his mind. What evil could be around those young ladies? Margaret simply sent them away to hinder Fraser from finding a wife. Fraser was so caught up in not wanting to share the throne that he was letting Margaret get away with this. "It was disrespectful to send them away. Without an explanation, I am sure. You must not abuse your power as a priest for any personal issues," she said.

Margaret sighed, annoyed by Beth’s voice when she wanted to have dinner. "After the king was so easily poisoned at his coronation, the temple is looking out for-"

"Don’t give me that crap. There is no one here for you to put on a show for," Beth argued. Margaret should just come out with it and say that she did it to prolong the kingdom having a queen. Beth didn’t see why Margaret would go out of her way to slow this down. Amelia was already queen elsewhere, so Margaret should let Fraser get his. It was going to happen regardless of what Margaret tried.

"I didn’t know the princess had this much fire in her," Annabelle chuckled, amused by Beth’s sudden confidence when speaking to Margaret.

Beth took a deep breath before turning her attention to Annabelle. "Why are you speaking to me? Shouldn’t you be hiding somewhere now that Richard is dead? You think that Margaret cares for you or your child, and now you are back to showing your face. She is only using you to mess with my son. I suggest you be quiet, as you will one day need my help."

Annabelle smiled, not the least bit worried that she would ever need Beth’s help. "Your help? I know that you wish to wake up and learn that I am dead. That my child is no longer around to be a threat to your son," she said, touching the fake belly Margaret forced her to wear. She would do anything to stay in the castle.

Beth walked to her seat next to Fraser and sat down.

"That child will be no threat to me. It is family that I will care for at my uncle’s place," said Fraser. The maids were watching, so he wanted it to seem like he had once cared for Annabelle’s child. "I would like one peaceful dinner as a family. Margaret, next time you must speak with me before sending my guests away. Don’t do too much as a priest, or I shall have your head."
