The Throne Is Mine -
Chapter 229
Chapter 229: Chapter 229
Beth wasn’t on board with Fraser spreading rumors that Amelia had worked with the north to kill her father. There were hushed talks everywhere Beth turned about Amelia. Some believed no daughter of Anne could do such a thing while others argue that royals would do anything to become Queen or King.
"Fraser, you should have thought this through before spreading what you did. It is not your cousin I am worried about. It is the man who is smittened with her. Remember that the truce was broken because he did not like you disrespecting her. There is nothing to stop the northerners from coming down the mountain and attacking us. Our guards are not ready," Beth said, leaving Fraser to look out the window.
All of the men with important roles in the King’s army had returned and as she expected, they asked about Leonard. They had not accepted Fraser as the new King and stormed out, threatening to give up their posts.
Beth bit her nails as she tried to think of a solution. Fraser already suggested replacing those who did not want to bow to him, but he failed to realize how many guards will leave the castle and follow behind the men they were loyal to. They needed every guard they had in case Killian would ever come down from the north again.
They could not let him easily take over the castle or the Blackwells would be laughed at. She needed to get Leonard back to the castle, but he wasn’t easy to find. Beth wouldn’t be surprised if he was somehow in the north with Amelia. Leonard always cared for Amelia as if she was his child.
"Fraser, have you made up your mind on which young lady you would take as your Queen? You need to pick on quickly so you can have a strong family on your side. I have pointed out the two I think would suit you-"
"Why do I need to get married and share the throne so early?" Fraser asked, not interested in a wife yet. "I am the most powerful man in all the land. I am not in a rush for anyone’s support."
"You have the throne, but it does not make you the most powerful man in all that land. There are families with power to rival the crown. What you have over them is the people. You need to find a Queen who can give you the support of one of those families. Why do you think Richard took sons from wealthy families into the court when there were more qualified men? He wanted their support," said Beth.
Fraser didn’t share the same sentiments as his mother. If there was anyone who felt like they were more powerful than him, he would show why he should be feared as King. That is what Richard and the kings before him failed to do. "I don’t want to think about this now, mother. We have more important things to do today. I will think about a wife tomorrow. Has there been any word about Amelia’s coronation-Ow!" Fraser rubbed the back of his head.
"Think about yourself, not what is going on with your cousin. Do you think she is thinking about you? Besides, there would be no way to get information about what is happening in the north so quickly. No one from our side goes up there but I have heard Margaret is sending out letters. I don’t know if it is to the north or elsewhere," Beth tapped her arm.
"It is obvious she is working with Amelia. She has placed a guard to not let anyone into Annabelle’s room. Since when have the two of them gotten along? Margaret has always made it clear she did not care for any of uncle’s mistresses. She must be supporting the bastard in Annabelle’s stomach one day taking the throne away from me. Leave," Fraser ordered the tailor.
"Thank you for all your hard work," Beth properly dismissed the tailor. "Something extra for all your hardwork will be sent to your shop. Remember," she placed a finger on her lips to remind him about keeping silent about the things he heard around Fraser.
"Thank you for your generosity, Lady Beth," the tailor bowed. He knew never to repeat the things he heard inside the castle unless he wanted to lose his head.
"It is time for us to start leaving, Fraser. Annabelle’s child will never be a problem for you. I told you the child would be lucky if it ever sees the light of day. She will have to leave the room at some point when the King orders her to. Not even Margaret can stop her from coming at the King’s request. You remember what your first order as King is right?" Beth said, walking ahead of Fraser to take him to the throne room where guests awaited his arrival.
"How can I forget it, mother? You will have a front seat view of it. I will punish her for what she put you through. I will completely ruin the former Queen, have her begging us for mercy. Just watch," Fraser said, catching up with his mother to hold her hand to walk side by side. He was about to become King, but he was still her son.
His first rule as King would be to send Margaret out of the castle.
"Thank you. I can always count on my son to look out for me. Congratulations on your big day, Fraser. I knew I could never become Queen, but I am satisfied with what you have accomplished," Beth said, squeezing Fraser’s hand. "I will never let anyone hurt you like they did your uncle. You shall be a King who rules this land even when your hair turns white. I will make sure of it."
Beth was nothing like Margaret to let her son die in the middle of the night. Fraser had a long life ahead of him as King.
’She scares me sometimes,’ Fraser thought, looking at his mother who could go from a sweet expression to a deadly one in a matter of seconds. Margaret had no idea how much his mother wanted her dead. Margaret’s final day was closer than she knew.
