Chapter 139: Chapter 139
’She’s trying too hard,’ Amelia thought.
Amelia picked up on the fact Jahi wasn’t trying to be friendly. She was used to fake smiles and conversations like this thanks to her many years in the castle and around nobles. Jahi was child’s play compared to everyone else. Still, she wasn’t going to call it out as there was nothing she could benefit from doing so and Cyrus was enjoying them all together.
’I need to keep an eye on her. Since she still harbors a lot of anger toward my family there is a possibility she would team up with anyone here to get rid of me. Why does she have to put Cyrus through this? Should I send them both away before something bad happens?’ Amelia seriously considered it though she would hate to see Cyrus leave.
Jahi would focus on her hatred and not the trouble she could find herself in. Specifically from Killian since she would be trying to hurt his future wife.
’I honestly cannot deal with a fake relationship from someone so close to me-’
"Amelia!" Gina’s voice snapped Amelia out of her thoughts. "Why are you just standing there daydreaming? Come sit with us."
Amelia looked at everyone else seated by a table. She was the only one still standing by a door. "Sorry. How do you like the room, Cyrus? It is much bigger than the one you have in the Blackwell castle."
"How do you know how big it is, princess?" Jahi asked, concerned by the fact Amelia and Cyrus might have been in his room at one point. It wasn’t uncommon for royals to sleep with their servants.
"Simple. All the servant quarters rooms are the same size. I have been inside both Gina’s and Cyrus’s rooms. Cyrus not so much since he was always standing outside my door to guard it but there were times I practically dragged him back there to get some rest. It was super annoying to reach my room and he’d be back there before me. Now I know why," Amelia glared at Cyrus. It was a tiring but fun memory.
Jahi grabbed a handful of her dress under the table. She regretted not accepting Cyrus’s feelings in the past to keep him loyal to only her. Now there were these women around him who were better than her. "I recall the way he stood up all night during a storm for me. My home had been destroyed so he offered me his bed. Cyrus has always been too kind, which is why people tend to misunderstand his feelings as something else," said Jahi.
Gina picked up on something weird about Jahi’s words and said, "Are you trying to say Amelia shouldn’t think it was him doing anything other than being nice? See," she pointed at Cyrus and Amelia. "I told you everyone picks up that there is something between you though you two are just being normal."
Amelia smacked her face. "Where is the correlation between what she said and what we were discussing earlier?"
"I don’t understand. What do you mean everyone thinks there is something between them? Did something happen for others to think that?" asked Jahi.
"Gina is trying to deflect from me saying I always thought she and Cyrus would end up together. She said it would be me and Cyrus instead. Now that you are here those rumors will be put to rest. Besides, I am getting married-"
"Yes, but there is no ring on your finger! When is King Killian going to give you an engagement ring? Do you think he might be planning something nice for you? I’m not a fan of how this marriage was brought to you," said Gina.
"I doubt it and I do not care for something romantic. That is not the person I am and we’re not in a position for something romantic to be done. I wouldn’t mind if he brings it to our room and hands it to me," Amelia said as rubbed where her ring was meant to go. "Do demons even care about rings?"
Cyrus shook his head, "No. It is normal for your people so there is a chance that he might give you one."
"Hmm. Well, what shall we talk about now? Random things or is it not so early for me to bring up our plan for the north?" Amelia said as there were important matters she wanted to discuss instead of coming here to get to know Jahi. This little group was all she could depend on for now.
Though she knew Jahi was not her friend, Amelia decided to use the act Jahi was putting on in front of Cyrus to add one more person who would be her eyes and ears in the castle. Jahi would not be involved in any important plans as that would be a recipe for disaster. Amelia hoped Cyrus would not be so wrapped around Jahi’s finger to mention her other plans with Jahi.
"Let’s talk about this castle because I am in need of a plan for me to survive. I do not have Cyrus or the king himself protecting me as you do," Gina brought up her concern for her safety. She wanted to have a guard for when she was not by Amelia’s side. "I need to know where I shouldn’t walk alone or who to avoid. We need like a servant’s opinion of the people here but they will not open up to me."
Cyrus, Amelia, and Gina looked at Jahi. As Gina was not a demon the servants would stay away from her so the only solution was Jahi.
"What?" Jahi asked, deeply confused by their stares.
"You are to become Amelia’s personal maid just like Gina. You have a better chance of finding out information about the people here from the servants. It is important we learn what the servants know. They see and know everything. It will be helpful," Cyrus said, hoping Jahi would agree to it.
Jahi didn’t want to do anything for Amelia but since she was supposed to be acting like she wanted a friendship with the princess to make Cyrus happy, she could not deny the request. Jahi plotted to use this as a chance to give Amelia false information and to get the servants against her. Amelia was a fool to task her with something so important.
Jahi wanted to find out who was against the princess being here so she could work with them to kill the princess. Since she was in this circle, she would use whatever she needed to offer Amelia’s enemies a helping hand.
"Good. You should report back to Amelia by the end of the day when you find something useful. You should also tell her what you think might not be useless as it sometimes becomes important later on. I’ve spent a lot of time around maids so I know they won’t warm up to you if it seems like you like Amelia. I know this might be harsh to bring up now but you should use being a slave to your advantage. Say that you hate the Blackwells and the princess," Gina offered Jahi advice.
When she worked as a maid in the Blackwell castle or other places, the maids would only discuss certain things with other maids they knew for a fact hated the same person as them. They could pick out who was lying or who was just there for information so Jahi needed to make it really believable that she hated Amelia.
’I have a feeling that she hates Amelia,’ Gina thought. She could admit she was dense when it came to a lot of things but she was used to picking up on someone pretending. She herself did it when she was around people she disliked but she desperately needed the job.
Gina knew Jahi’s dislike for Amelia was warranted after everything she went through but she didn’t think it was so much that Jahi and Amelia wouldn’t be friends one day. It was enough to make Jahi disliking Amelia believable.
Amelia was surprised to see Gina taking charge of this area she had more experience with than all of them. Just like herself, she knew there was a big change coming for Gina in the future. She looked forward to seeing Gina blossoming to be so much more than her personal maid in the north and for Cyrus also. She hoped he could become an important figure in Killian’s guards.
Amelia wanted her friends to also have a good life and somehow be remembered in history alongside. If Jahi could get rid of her anger, Amelia wanted the same for her too. "I will let Killian know that Jahi will officially be my other personal maid. I think Alastor will be the one to introduce the two of you to the head maid and other maids."
Gina banged her head against the table at this tragic news. "Why him out of all people?" she muttered.
