The Throne Is Mine -
Chapter 101
Chapter 101: Chapter 101
"You’ve made the castle become quite noisy, Amelia. People are doing nothing but talking about you calling off the engagement. Some have even come to me to ask what are you thinking. Begging me to have a word with you. It’s a pain for me," Margaret sighed.
"It’s interesting how worried many of them are but before this, they weren’t treating me right. Laughing in my face because I have to marry Killian but only now that it is called off did they realize I had saved their lives. Some of the court ministers sent me gifts," Amelia informed her grandmother. She sipped her tea as she found all of this to be funny. "I let the maids take them."
"As you should. Don’t make those snakes think they can buy you."
Amelia put down her cup on the table and said, "Why are you not angry I have created havoc in the castle and have not cleared it up? Even though you cherish me, I don’t mind you scolding me."
"Why would I force myself to scold you when I don’t think you are wrong? You saved this castle by accepting Killian’s proposal. If a truce is being made you should be there to make sure you are traveling to the north all for nothing. You have to list your terms to make sure you are protected. If you stay quiet and let them do as they please, you would continue to be excluded like in the past. I will say it would have been interesting to see if Killian would have made them include you."
"I don’t care what he would have done honestly. I have to do things for myself and not wait on anyone else. Killian did give me some good advice that I will hold on to in the future. Sometimes I find him to be insufferable but he is a good king. Much better than my father so far," Amelia muttered.
"Hmm. Speaking of your father, have you seen that woman of his recently? I’d like to think she found a hole to crawl and stay silent in but that’s never the case. You have to be cautious when people like her are quiet," said Margaret.
Amelia thought she was the only one to find it odd Annabelle was missing in action. She expected to hear more of Annabelle claiming her child to be the next king. "I will have the head maid check in on her. She might be a pain in the ass but she’s pregnant."
"If she had any understanding about the castle, she would take that baby and run away to a home the castle owns. Many royals in the past have killed babies to keep their position. No one likes having a competitor for their title. My sources tell me that Fraser’s mother is now in the castle. She has learned well not to approach me."
"I ran into her when I was on my way to the library. I honestly don’t know what to make of her sometimes. There are days when I enjoy her company but then there are days when I feel weird around her. Going forward you will have to deal with a lot of Adams family members coming into the castle. Sucks to be you," Amelia chuckled, happy to be going out of the castle for this sole reason.
"No, they will not. The castle is not a place for any and everyone to enter as they please as if it is an inn. I will limit how many of them are allowed in. Have you started to organize what you will be taking to the north? You won’t be taking everything to the north, will you?" Margaret asked in a sad tone. She wanted to be able to go into Amelia’s room when she was gone and still see a couple of things.
"Should I call for the painter to come create a portrait of me so you can talk to it when I am gone? I was honestly thinking of leaving Gina with you but she wants to go to the north with me. I don’t want you to be all alone and I am worried about a certain someone doing anything to get you from being over his shoulder," Amelia said referring to Fraser who would want total control over the kingdom.
"I understand your concern but I have been in this castle far longer than you have with many who plotted to kill me. I am still alive and well while many of them are rotting below the earth. I have my ways of dealing with the castle. I have many connections here to take care of anyone plotting on me," she reassured Amelia.
Amelia knew her grandmother had deep connections in the castle but she could not help worrying. Sometimes thinking you are safe and untouchable makes you put your guard down which gives someone the moment to strike and end you.
"Good afternoon lady Margaret," Beth’s voice was heard by the doorway of the balcony they were on.
Amelia was surprised to see Beth here considering she normally remained out of sight of her grandmother. Something must have happened. "Good afternoon, aunt Beth. I’m glad you decided to come. How did you find us?" Amelia wanted to know the culprit to tell them to stop giving away where she was so easily no matter who the person was.
"I asked the head maid and she quickly told me. May I have a seat?" Beth asked Amelia as she knew Margaret would send her away. Beth found Margaret to be childish for being angry with a child who didn’t ask to be born from an affair.
Amelia glanced at her quiet grandmother for a moment then replied, "Yes. Please sit."
"This was meant to be a private moment for the two of us, Amelia. You should have notified me prior that we were having guests and then I would have made the decision whether or not I wanted to come," Margaret stated, showing her frustration. She was never one to hide how much she did not like having Beth around.
"With all due respect, I have done nothing to you," Beth addressed Margaret as she sat down.
"You have not," Margaret agreed with her. "But I made the decision long ago that I do not want to act like I enjoy your presence. You are a child conceived during my marriage. I do not dislike or like you. I just prefer not to have you around because there is nothing I have to say to you. I have never harmed you and made sure the servants cared for you after my husband died. Respect my wishes to stay out of my sight."
"That sounds like you hate me," said Beth. Why did she have to remain out of sight if Margaret did not hate her? Margaret should just be honest and admit it.
"Were you not listening?" Margaret sighed and felt the urge to roll her eyes. "Perhaps you will understand me if your husband sleeps with another woman, a woman that you knew, and brings a child before you to be raised by you. Maybe you will be the woman who quietly accepts the child but I had no intentions of dealing with the mess from his affairs. You were an innocent child but I could never bring myself to care for you as I cared for Richard."
Amelia felt bad for Beth but at the same time, she understood her grandmother. As far as she knew, her grandmother never did anything horrible to Beth. She only stayed away from her. If Killian were to one day present a child she did not bear for her to raise, she wouldn’t accept it.
Regardless of how poorly her grandmother spoke of her grandfather, Amelia had a feeling that at one point Margaret did love him but the affairs hurt her and closed her heart. It must have been painful to see Beth and be reminded that her husband slept with another woman.
Amelia knew what it was like to be in Beth’s shoes because her father did not want her in his presence. Understanding both of their feelings, she chose to stay out of the conversation and quietly ate.
"My husband would never put me in this position. Let’s start with that," said Beth.
"It was a hypothetical situation," Margaret reminded Beth but then she laughed as nothing she said would matter. "I have nothing more to say to you."
"So, the weather has been nice," Amelia stated to get rid of the tension. "Good day for a walk in the garden to pass time or something."
"I hear the news that you called off your engagement to the king of the north. It must be false since you are sitting here drinking juice and tea while everyone is worried," Beth said to Amelia.
"So that’s why you came looking for me. What you heard is true but fear not, I am no longer upset that they tried to exclude me. Fraser and everyone else will soon receive my invitation. You should be the first to hear alongside grandmother that my engagement is back on."
