The Three Who Chose Me -
Chapter 27: A Night of Surprises
Chapter 27: A Night of Surprises
Josie
I stood frozen, my eyes wide as saucer pans.
My breath was hitched in my throat, my heart racing uncontrollably.
But then, whatever it was—fleeting as hell—I could barely register it.
I only got to feel his lips against mine for a brisk nanosecond, but his warmth and taste lingered much longer than that, as he dragged me across the floors.
Literally. Like it was the most normal thing in the world.
This man had no single gentle bone in him.
I could barely hold the gazes of everyone we walked by, my cheeks heavily flushed.
"Ah, Thorne," one of the men we breezed past slapped a hand on Thorne’s back, "a comely one you’ve got on your arm, huh?"
Uh, excuse me...comely?
What did that even mean?
I hope that wasn’t a classy insult to my status as omega, dipped in honey.
You couldn’t put it past people like them. High-society, filthy-rich, condescending.
Some of them had the decency to sugarcoat.
I glanced over at Thorne to see his lips pulled back in a smug smile, like this was pretty normal. Like it wasn’t strange.
Like we were an actual couple that understood each other.
We strayed further down the floors, to the less crowded end, and just then, the lights dimmed.
I watched in awe as a large sculpture carved in gold—a wolf, actually—lightened up the dimmed space, illuminating the rose-petaled entrance as a couple slowly made their way out.
They held hands, smiling and waving at the crowd on both sides of the room.
They were...beautiful.
The guests went berserk, some cheering and clapping, most others spraying bundles of money and stacks of gold.
It was the most lavish sight I’d seen in a long time. No..have I even seen anything like this before?
Was it always like this? These parties?
I turned to Thorne, my eyes slightly widened and the question on my lips.
But he was looking at me already, his green eyes intense, his face closer than it had been moments ago. Dangerously close.
I slowed my gaze, my eyes taking in his face at such a close range. Really taking in every contour, for the first time.
The sharp jawline, high, angular cheekbones, the curve of full lips that screamed attention, the softness a sharp contrast to his strong jawline.
Just...the perfect face.
Good heavens.. this man was gorgeous. Maybe the most gorgeous out of the three brothers, and how the fuck am I just seeing it for the very first time?
I felt a rush of warmth on my skin, between my toes, up my thighs. Pooling at my center and spreading further up, brushing against my nipples in the fabric.
Just his face did this to me.
The perfect arch of his brows, a charming hue of red, the fiery green glinting beneath in his eyes.
I swallowed hard, oblivious to the fact that my purse was almost slipping out of my hand as I stumbled back.
He reached down and caught the purse just as it slipped from my fingers, his fingers brushing mine lightly, brushing deeply.
I still didn’t stop.
"Uhm," I cleared my throat, running a hand through my curls, "excuse me. I need to use the restroom."
I whirled on my heels and stumbled away before Thorne could say a word, fleeing with my fucking heart palpitations.
But I didn’t go to the restroom.
I fled to a different part of the hall that was closed off from Thorne’s vision. Somewhere I could finally breathe without having to stare into his ridiculously handsome face.
I grabbed a champagne flute from a waiter that breezed past with a tray, a bold attempt to soothe my frayed nerves.
And shutting my eyes, I threw the champagne down my throat in one go. I swayed a bit on my feet, savoring the burn on my tongue.
Then I felt a bristling sensation on the back of my neck, almost like someone had their eyes drilling through.
I slowly turned around to see a man in a dark tux, watching me intently, with intense eyes.
He didn’t even hide it, the sinister smirk on his lips only stretching darker.
He crossed over to me, twirling a flute of champagne between his fingers, and the closer he came, I backtracked further.
I turned on my heels, my instincts screaming at me to leave.
But his words stopped me.
"How is it possible?"
I slowed my steps, tensing.
What is he talking about?
He came up close behind me, the fabric of his tux bristling against my skin. "How is it possible that a girl like you, an omega like you, could bag the three notorious Alphas?"
I held my breath as he pressed the icy glass against my cheek, leaning too close it grated on my nerves.
"It got me curious, you know. Are you that good in bed?" his voice lowered to a repulsive whisper. "Because if you are, then I’d like a taste of the cookie."
My eyes stung with tears, my fist balling as I struggled to restrain myself.
I needed to control myself. I didn’t need to draw unnecessary attention.
I sniffed back the tears, gripping the flute tighter and lifting my feet to leave.
But he quickly slipped around me and grabbed my arm with such roughness that startled me.
The flute slipped from between my fingers and crashed to the floor, the shards scattering on the floor around me.
Things happened very quickly in the next few moments.
One second, I was colliding against the repulsive stranger’s chest, and the next, rough, warm, calloused hands were wrapped around my ankle, lifting it off the floor protectively.
I glanced down with a gasp to see Thorne crouched beneath me, examining my foot. Then he lifted his eyes and they collided against mine with an intensity that swayed me a bit.
We stayed that way for a nanosecond, a second, a minute, more—I don’t know—my heart racing like crazy the whole time.
But it was so electric I couldn’t look away, lost in the sea of green. I felt safe and...wanted. Really seen.
Then, with a fluid movement, he rose to his feet, breaking the connection.
I wasn’t aware he had yet another surprise in store for me.
He snaked a hand around my waist and gently snagged me from the grip of the stranger, pulling me so close our lips brushed lightly. Again.
Holy fuck. I might just die from the tension. Or was it the burst of stars?
Then, as if that had not happened, he quickly drew back and turned intense green eyes on the stranger.
"Josie," he started in a gruff voice, "is Alpha Jake bothering you?"
Alpha Jake?
I swallowed hard, realizing that Thorne had probably not witnessed my little encounter with this strange man.
Maybe that was for the best? Because I didn’t think he would take anyone putting their hands on me lightly.
The look on his face said a lot.
I cleared my throat, averting my gaze from his face. "No," I lied through my teeth in a small voice, not wanting to start a war between Alphas.
But he clearly wasn’t satisfied with my response. Or he just saw through the lie.
Because a low growl rose in his throat as he pulled me further away from the stranger he’d referred to as Alpha Jake, and closer to himself.
"You know I don’t play about what’s mine, Jake," he spat, his tone menacing. "So keep your hands off."
What was his...
For some reason, a hum passed through my body. Although I know how I would’ve reacted before...now.
He interlocked our fingers as he stared the stranger down, my eyes drawn to the constant twitch in his jaw.
"Relax, Thorne," Alpha Jake laughed, smoothing his tie, "why would I be interested in what’s yours?"
"You might be interested, I don’t care," Thorne replied with a careless shrug. "Just don’t TOUCH."
With that, he whirled on his heels and walked away, pulling me along.
As if on cue, soft music filtered through the speakers as we glided across the floors.
Thorne pulled me to the dance floor that was bathed in a pool of a million makeshift stars, glittering from above.
It was a breathtaking sight, and I flowed in the euphoria as Thorne pulled me against his chest, his breath hot and raspy against my face, his green eyes sharp and intense, a shimmer of desire in them.
"Would you care to dance with me?" he murmured, his eyes trailing down to my lips.
And I did a double take.
Did he just..ask me? That didn’t sound like an order.
Thorne-fucking-Whistle-down just asked, if I’d care to dance with him...
"You look stunning, by the way." More surprises.
He said it so casually, his lips curled up slightly in the hint of a smile. A genuine smile.
Strange, but it made my heart flutter.
My breath caught in my throat as he splayed his hands firmly around my waist and pulled me closer, swaying me gently to the soft music.
Swirling a tongue across my lower lip nervously, I moved with the slow rhythm, letting his arms guide me.
Our gazes were locked in an electric stare, his warmth wrapping around me.
"Aww, look at them," people whispered around us, but I barely caught these words.
I was somewhere in a world that was unfamiliar to me.
Suddenly, he broke away, his warmth dissipating for a moment, but his eyes never leaving mine.
"Come with me."
