Chapter 88: Freaking out
Chapter 88: Freaking out
Beatrix furrowed her brows at Rhys’ words. What did he mean that he couldn’t understand emotions?
She felt Damien hold on her tightened. It was like both brothers were trying to decipher what she had just said.
"Do you mean what you just said?" Damien asked.
Beatrix turned her head to look at him, fiddling with her fingers she blushed and nodded.
"Y-yeah...I-I do." She stuttered
"So you’re saying that you’re in love with both Rhys and I?" He asked slowly and she sucked in a deep breath as her heart beat faster in her chest.
She was afraid of how they were going to react. What if they didn’t feel the same way? It would be so awkward and she knew her heart would break into pieces.
But she decided to take the risk.
"Yes.." Beatrix replied.
Damien’s face paled. Seconds seemed like hours as he lowered his gaze on the floor, looking everywhere but her face.
"Say something...both of you....please." She practically begged.
A sharp exhale escaped Rhys’ lips as he stood up from his stool.
"Sorry Beatrix, I can’t do this."
Beatrix thought her heart was literally breaking . Like her aorta had twisted and her valves had clamped shut. She couldn’t breath, she couldn’t think.
"W-what do you mean by you can’t do this?"
"You can’t love me Beatrix, trust me, the only reason why you think you love me is because you have romanticized me in your head."
He said bitterly and looked away when he saw the tears slip down her cheeks and clenched
his jaw.
"That’s my choice to make, not yours" she urged him,
He ran his hands over his face roughly, looking like he wanted to explode from the emotions going through him, and as much as she wanted to go over and make it better for him, she couldn’t, not when he was making her hurt.
Her heart was shattering into pieces. She knew why he was behaving like this but still it hurt.
"You don’t have to say anything, it’s okay."
She tried to reason, but her voice couldn’t stop it’s wavering from the heavy disappointment and pain eating her alive.
Rhys grimaced, and her chest caved in a little more from the blank look on his face.
"I-I’m not worthy of love, little mouse. I just can’t give you that. Anything but that please..."
Her lip trembled as she pressed them together, blinking at the moisture in my eyes.
"I just want you to know, I’m not asking for much" Beatrix sucked in a sharp breath, wishing he would hug her instead of looking so broken the way he was
"That’s the problem. "
She pleaded with him with her eyes, trying to show him that she was okay with whatever that he could give her.
"I don’t want anything from you, I just want
you"
She closed the gap between them and took his face in her hands.
Rhys wouldn’t even look at her, and he winced as her words hit him, looking at the ground.
He squeezed his eyes closed, tensing his face like he was trying to push away whatever was clawing through his mind.
"That’s the one thing you shouldn’t want," he said slowly, more to himself than to her, before removing her hands from his face.
It hurt but she reached for him again. He stopped her by taking her wrists in his hands.
Hot tears of shame slid down her rose-colored cheeks.
"You shouldn’t love me, Beatrix."
She searched his eyes. She could see how broken he looked. He was a beautiful mess and despite what he said she knew it was already too late.
Without sparing her another glance he began to walk out of the room leaving her alone with Damien.
"Sorry little mouse..." He said and paused at the entrance, but still refused to look at her as his shoulders slump, his own voice coming out hoarse like he was fighting back his own emotions
"Beatrix..." Damien called her softly and she turned around to look at him.
"W-why—I—"
Damien pulled her into his arms and rubbed her back gently.
"Shss.....trust me he is just scared and confused. Give him time okay? He is going to come around."
Beatrix nodded and held on his shirt as sobs racked through her.
"Rhys—he has been through a lot. He doesn’t know how to express his emotions and—"
Damien trailed off. Clearly he wanted to say more but he restrained himself.
Beatrix frowned when she heard Damien. She knew he had nightmares and something had happened to cause that aggressive nightmares but what?
She pulled away from Damien, "W-what happened? Why does he have nightmares?"
Damien sighed, "It’s not my story to tell but don’t take this to heart okay?"
Beatrix bit her lips to stop the tears and nodded.
"I-I don’t know what to even say! Fuck. Sorry darling, unfortunately we are a bunch of men who don’t know how to process emotions. We don’t mean to hurt you."
Damien said as he wiped the tears from her eyes.
"You’re so special to us. I hope that you know that. You’re the best thing in our lives right now and I hope that you’re patient with us.
I wasn’t taught how to love when I was a kid. I had a monster for a father and I have never felt loved before. But with you I want to experience all of it. I’m trying to be better but I’m not, so go easy on me, okay?
I’m going to learn how to love you. I’m going to make you the happiest and I know it’s just not only me. Rhys too, I have seen how his eyes light up when he is looking at you.
He doesn’t even see it himself, stupid kid.
His words were so simple yet so heavy. She knew this wasn’t a love confession from him but it was the most beautiful words someone has said to her.
She was sobbing now. She brought her forehead to his chest and clutched his shirt and cried.
"Oh my God!" He panicked seeing her crying like a baby.
"What? Did I say something wrong? Tell me Beatrix. I just can’t see you cry like this."
Beatrix chuckled between sobs and pulled away from him.
She wiped her tears from her eyes and shook her head.
"I-I it just—"
He raised his eyebrows at her waiting for her to speak.
"I’m just—I wasn’t expecting to hear those words from you."
Damien raked his fingers through his hair, frustration bubbled on his face.
"Oh, was it bad? I’m so sorry—I just—"
Beatrix shook her head, "No no Damien it was beautiful. Those words are so beautiful I don’t even know what to say ."
Relief washed over his face and he pressed a kiss on her wet cheeks.
"We will figure this out okay?"
Beatrix nodded, "Okay."
**********
Rhys rubbed his chest as he walked inside the gym.
Fuck! He needed to let out the steam inside him. He could still see Beatrix’s face. He had hurt her.
She looked so heartbroken and it was eating him alive, ripping him apart like he couldn’t breathe.
How could she even be in love with someone as worthless as him? She was so full of sunshine and he was full of darkness.
He couldn’t help it, she didn’t know how much it terrified him.
He didn’t want to hurt her, she was too gentle and pure for the fucked up world he was in, not to mention what was in his head.
He knew she didn’t love her. Once she saw how fucked up he was she was going to leave. They all leave at the end of the day.
She had seen him at his worst but that wasn’t all. He was so full of trauma, anger and pain that he didn’t think there was another room for him to accommodate her love.
Maybe he should show her the other part of him? His intrusive thoughts whispered back at him.
’What if you show her and she leaves?’
He knew he was being selfish, he couldn’t love her as she deserved to be loved but that didn’t mean he was going to let her go.
Being with her was some of the best moments in his life.
Fuck! He screamed and slammed his fist in the punching bag.
Only if he wasn’t fucked up.
He didn’t know how long he slammed the fist into the bag.
He only stopped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and saw Damien standing behind him.
Damien glanced at his knuckles which were bleeding. He had been lost in his little lonely world that he didn’t see that his hand was bleeding.
Without saying a word he sighed and walked towards the table in the gym room.
He picked the first aid box and beckoned at him to come.
Rhys hesitated for a moment before he walked towards Damien who was now sitting on the floor in the gym room waiting for him.
Rhys sat down beside him and without a word, Damien started dressing his wounds.
None of them said anything at least not until Damien was done.
"How are you?" Damien asked, looking at his brother.
Rhys shrugged and ignored his question. He knew what his brother was doing.
He always spent time with him anytime he freaked out.
He laid down on the floor staring at the ceiling and Damien laid beside him.
"How is she?" Rhys spoke, finally breaking the silence. He hoped she was okay. He hated himself for how he had reacted to her but he had freaked out hearing those words out of nowhere.
"She’s okay. She is in her room right now."
Damien replied, giving him a reassuring mile.
Rhys sighed, "I fucked up didn’t I?" He mumbled.
"No. She understands you. I told her to give you space to process all of this."
"So she doesn’t hate me?" He asked, almost afraid of Damien’s answer.
"Of course not. I don’t think our princess is capable of hate. Yes she is hurt and that’s far from hate, brother."
"What should I do?" Rhys asked.
"I think you should tell her what happened, Rhys. She had seen you have nightmares. She deserves to know what happened. If not all, at least share some with her."
Rhys’ furrowed his brow and sighed, "I don’t think she would be able to handle that. I’m afraid I will lose her."
Damien turned to look at him, "You won’t. But keeping your demons away from her might make you lose her."
Rhys frowned and nodded, "Okay. Do you think she would want to see me now?"
"Yes. Go to her." Damien said.
