The Sweetest Temptation -
Chapter 37: Sick
Chapter 37: Sick
Damien woke up briefly with the sunrise but with sweat dripping all over his body and extremely thirsty.
His skin was burning up with a throbbing headache developing beneath his temples.
He got up from his bed but he felt so weak. His whole body was aching and it felt like someone had pierced his chest with an arrow.
He nearly made it to the door until he was throwing up all over the floors of his bedroom.
Before he knew what was happening, he was confined to his bed; the heavy blanket that laid on top of him, did a feeble job of keeping his body from trembling.
Damien must have drifted to sleep, for the soft
whisper around him pulled him out of his slumber.
"Damien, it’s me." The voice said. He arched his brows. The voice was so familiar but he couldn’t remember who it was.
She came close then, vanilla immediately filled his nostrils. A small smile settled on his lips at the realization of who it was; Beatrix . Something cold
touched his skin, causing him to recoil.
He cracked his watery, bleary eyes open and saw her face then, leaning over him with distress clouding her features.
Damien opened his mouth and mumbled her name but even he could barely make it out from the rasped sounds that came out of him instead.
"My God,Damien," she said in a strained voice, her fingers gently sweeping the hair off his eyes and face.
Her cool touch against his burning skin made him shiver.
"I waited for you to come downstairs so that we can have breakfast and when you didn’t show, I kept pacing outside your door, calling to you but you weren’t answering. And then I walk in and find vomit near you door and you look so sick. What is wrong?"
"I think I have a bad fever. Sorry," he smiled, reaching forward to brush her cheek. When his fingers touched her cheek, he felt that odd feeling again, only this time, he knew what it was; a longing.
"R-really?"
He nodded weakly, "H-hmm...water please."
Instantly, she rushed out of the room and came back some minutes later with a glass of water. She guided it to his lips, her small hand cradling his head as he struggled to elevate himself a little.
Damien moaned at the relief of the water on his dry mouth and throat and he blinked his eyes close as he settled back on the pillow.
"You’re burning up so much and you are sweating profusely. We need to go to the hospital. I don’t know anywhere and I don’t even know how to drive."
She sighed. He could see the disappointment all over her face. She probably was blaming herself for not being able to help him right now.
"My phone, the passcode is 1030. Search for Xavier and tell him I’m sick he would know what to do." He managed in one breath.
Beatrix was in shock. She didn’t expect him to trust her that much to give her access to his phone.
Beatrix took his phone on the bed stand and after removing the passcode she dialed Xavier’s number. On the first ring he picked up.
"Hey man, I thought you wanted to spend the day with your fiancé. Why are you calling me?"
Beatrix flushed and cleared her throat.
"Erm-Hi. This is Beatrix, Damien’s fiancé." She felt weird saying the word.
"He is currently very sick. I-he—"
"Damien is sick?!" Xavier asked, shocked on the other end of the phone.
"Y- yes. I think he has gotten an infection from the wound from last night. Can you call him a doctor please? He looks very weak and sick."
"Sure. I will be there in 10 minutes with a doctor."
Beatrix breathed a sigh of relief, "Alright. Thank you."
Damien didn’t know when he had drifted off to sleep he woke up when he heard whispers around him.
He opened his eyes and saw the doctor handing a sheet of paper to Beatrix.
"He got an infection from the wound, that’s the reason for his fever."
The doctor declared.
"I’ve given him an injection for the vomiting and written him an oral antibiotic but it should clear up on its own in three days or so but continue taking it for a week. Who dressed the wound?"
Beatrix flushed, "I-I did." The doctor nodded.
"You did an amazing job, since you know how to do it, change the dressing everyday to prevent further infection of the wound. I will come back tomorrow to check up on him. "
Beatrix stared at the sheet before looking up at the doctor. "Just an antibiotic? He looks like he is dying. It must be something else. We should take him to the hospital-
"He is a little dehydrated but as long as you keep a steady supply of fluids--water, juice, soup-on hand, he’ll recover faster," the doctor interrupted
"Let me know immediately if the vomiting doesn’t resolve or if he vomits the medicine or the food he eats out."
"If he vomits again, you’ll hear from me," Beatrix said with a grim nod, glancing at him as her eyes briefly
flashed with anxiety.
"Thank you for your time, doctor."
"Don’t worry too much. Damien rarely gets sick. I’m sure the knife was contaminated, that’s why. He would bounce back quickly .," the doctor acquiesced as he stood to gather his things. "
Beatrix nodded, "Okay, thank you."
The doctor bowed slightly at Damien, "Boss, I will take my leave."
The doctor left leaving Beatrix alone with Damien.
"You look like shit."
Damien turned at the voice and saw Xavier leaning against the wall.
"Hmm..don’t you have somewhere to be?"
Xavier smirked and nodded. They have spent literally almost their whole life together so they understood each other better.
"Y-yeah. I should go to look at that stuff we were talking about yesterday. Don’t die, I’m still waiting for the wedding."
Damien’s lips curled up when he saw a flush of shyness on Beatrix’s cheeks.
His mind couldn’t wander thinking about how she would look in a wedding gown. Definitely breathtaking.
"Okay."
