Chapter 273: The visit

Chapter 273: The visit

"What I’m trying to say is, you didn’t possibly ’not do’ anything to me simply because moral says so, there was something else. What was it?"

When she posed her question, Remo remained still for a while, peering into her eyes with such intensity that she thought he’d bore holes through her head. She shifted her gaze from his intimidating ones and began to fumble with her bag.

"You called another man’s name while we were at it, no matter who it is, even if it’s a one-night stand, no one feels good when their sex partner calls another person’s name during sex—in our case, it was during foreplay."

After he had spoken, Stella felt a chill course through her bone marrows, rousing her moment of embarrassment once again. There was every possibility that the name she had mentioned was Matteo, in fact, there was no disputing the fact. She closed her palms over her face, attempting to hide her shame. Remo, on the other hand, was not finished.

"Personally, I would not care about whoever it was you were calling in your moment. However, the person’s name you called, Matteo, turns out to be my brother."

Remo’s chauffeur dropped her off safely at her home, and now, she was in her room, sitting at her dressing table and facing her mirror—still in a daze about the last-minute conversation that they had.

Somewhere inside me, I had hoped that I was wrong...but once again, my expectations were shattered. She thought to herself with remorse singing through her being. Moments later, her mind began to try out certain kinds of thoughts, causing her to shake her head vigorously in denial.

"No, no, no, no, no, what the actual fuck!" She yelled to herself, closing her hands over her ears and shutting her eyes.

"I can’t believe I was with Matteo’s brother." She said to herself once again, shock and disbelief still evident in her tone. However, when the thought came to her mind, the memory of the last moment she had sighted Matteo came flooding her mind once again, filling her with that unimaginable pain that had driven her to go and get a drink, which led to her discovering his brother. One interesting event onto the other.

Today was still a workday, which meant she was expected at the office. However, she was still not cut out to show up before him since she was still healing from the moment of truth that she was presented with last night. She sighed and got on her feet, looking around her room in search of her phone. When she finally spotted it, she placed a call to Matteo.

What excuse am I going to give to escape having to go to the office? Oh, yes, a sick leave.

"Good morning," came his sultry tone over the phone. In spite of him being guilty, there was this sense of justice that his voice still held, and it pissed her off. She summoned control over her emotions with a sigh before she spoke.

"Good morning, Mr. Quinn," she made her voice hoarse for effect. "Pardon me, sir, but I’d like to take a sick leave." She moaned the words as if she had a lot of difficulty speaking them. She held her breath, waiting anxiously for his reply. If he was one to see through an act, he’d know that she was lying and simply did not want to show up before him. Whatever the case was, there was no way that he’d be in any place to disregard her wish because of what he wanted.

For a long time, he had been getting what he wanted. This time around, this was what she wanted, and she would not get down without making sure he gave it to her.

"Alright, that’s not a problem. However, I’d like to know what’s wrong." He mumbled cautiously, worry evident in his tone.

What?! That was easier than I thought. I guess his guilt was much more than what I’d expected. She noted to herself, sighing in relief as she continued. "I might’ve come down with a fever I’m yet to identify. I’ll visit the hospital for a check-up today."

"Make sure you do that, get well soon." With that, he ended the call.

"I guess that’s it," She whispered to herself, pain singed through her chest, hinting at the existence of the heartbreak she felt not only from her discovery last night, but also from his unwillingness to continue in the relationship. From the way he had just spoken to her, it was clear that he did not have any intentions of continuing what they once had.

So much for keeping his body and winning his mind later. She thought to herself, tears welling up in her eyes. She threw herself onto the bed and let them flow onto her pillow. She longed to release the pain, but she still wasn’t sure how to make the effect non-existent. It was a disturbing feeling, and it made living ten times unbearable. Just when she was about to prepare herself for a moment of moping, a knock vibrated through the confines of her room, rousing her to alert.

She stared hard at the barricade between herself and the person at the other side, wondering who on earth it could be. It was most definitely not Matteo, because she had just finished speaking to him, and from the sounds of it, he was still most definitely at the office. Not Beatrix, because she was still on her trip, so, who could it be?

Without saying a word, she got off the bed and began to make her way toward the door. Luckily, she had no shoes on, so, there was no way of the person, whoever it was, knowing that someone was around—unless they knew she was in.

Could it be...

With a swift jerk of the door, she revealed Remo, hovering at the door post, his arm bracing his weight while he towered over her.
