Chapter 209: Second chance

Chapter 209: Second chance

"You used me!" She yelled before he could continue.

Her watery eyes spilled over and she groaned, wiping at her tears. She sat back down and shook her head.

"You could forgive Rhys, but not me?" Damien asked.

"How I handled things with Rhys isn’t your business and it doesn’t have a place in our conversation right now. You are two different men. Maybe it was a mistake to get involved with both of you at all. At least I know that when we were together, I was willing to ignore the stares, the concerns, the everything because I was sure what I felt was worth it. My heart ... my heart drove me forward, not some plot, not reason ... not ..."

"If revenge had been my only goal, why would I have been with you in private, Beatrix? Why would I have shared myself with you like I did? There was no reason for it, but I did it, I was with you in all ways. It started on the worst premise, but I’m not sorry for that."

Beatrix froze and gaped at Damien. He didn’t shy away from her. Instead, he walked towards her and leaned into her bubble, putting his hands on her so she couldn’t run. She’d have to stay right there – in the chair – so he could speak and be heard properly.

She didn’t need to be thinking about Rhys, about anything but him right now. Beatrix shuddered and stared at him, her eyelashes fluttering ever so slightly.

"I care about you and I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to know you like this if I hadn’t wanted revenge on your father at the time," Damien said clearly.

"So you’re not sorry for hurting me?"

"That’s the only thing I’m sorry for," he argued.

They stared at one another silently until Beatrix shivered.

"I never want to be the reason you cry, and yet here I am, apologizing for every tear that’s rolled down your gorgeous face," Damien whispered, lifting a hand to wipe away a tear.

She sniffed. "Do you have any idea how terrible it felt? Hearing that you only wanted me for revenge?"

"That’s a lie."

"Damien, that was what started it all. How can I separate they two?"

"Easily – the same way people separate how they met their partner and the relationship that happened after the first date," he said.

She shook her head, but wiped her nose. "Why are you even here? What do you get out of our relationship? I felt like I just too up a bunch of your time, like I was an inconvenience unless you were kissing me or touching me or ..."

He kept watching her. "I would put everything to the side for you. I should still be at the ..." He closed his eyes and shook his head. "The point is I care about you and if things need to change, I will change."

They kept watching one another as Beatrix’s heart thundered against her ribs. She wanted to believe him, desperately. She didn’t want the revenge to matter compared to all they’d shared and the way Damien and Rhys made her feel.

She wasn’t ready to give all that up.

But she refused to be a pawn in a game. She knew what happened to pawns in every chess game and in the mafia world: they were sacrificed.

"Tell me you don’t feel what I feel and I’ll leave," Damien insisted.

"I don’t know what you feel," she lied.

"You know you make logic pointless. You ruin every attempt I make at not caring and not having ties. I feel overwhelmed just being this close to you, Beatrix. I want to kiss you, I want to hold you in my arms. I want the opportunity to make this better."

She sucked her bottom lip.

"Tell me that your heart doesn’t beat faster when I’m around. Tell me that you can’t get past how we met. Tell me that you can move on and you can find someone who cares for you as much as I do and makes you feel like I do and I will walk out that door."

She remained quiet, trying to drink it all in, trying to evaluate how she really felt.

Of course, being around Damien and Rhys made her light up. She’d never felt so supported, heard, understood. She’d never met anyone who seemed to bring out the best in her while appreciating the worst.

She’d thought they were in love. Sniffing, she looked away. "How I feel isn’t important."

"It’s the only thing that’s important right now," Damien argued.

She scoffed.

"I know that you rattle every thought in my head. You make my heart come to life. You have destroyed every plan for my future because none of them matter without you and I will spend the rest of my life making up for hurting you," he swore.

"Why?"

"Because you are the realest thing in my life, Beatrix. I never thought I could feel this way. I never thought I’d beg, but ..." he dropped down to his knees. "I will never be the reason you cry again. It breaks my heart seeing you like this because of me."

She sucked in a breath and tried to draw back, but she couldn’t. Even if is face was different, how could she not feel the same around him as she always had.

"You said second chances were always mistakes," she reminded him.

"With anyone but you and me it would be. We’re the exception." His fingers brushed her caves and her whole body jolted as if she’d been electrocuted.

How could she walk away from a man who made her feel so much so easily, with the simplest touches, softest looks, even a few words. Was trying again worth the possibility of being hurt again? Could Rhys and Damien hurt her more by being in her life or by disappearing from her entirely.

"You think this is a good idea?"

"It doesn’t matter. What do you think, what do you feel right now? That’s all you should be considering in this conversation. I could gravel for years, I could sob, I could make promises, but time is the only way I can prove what I mean and if you can’t do that, I will find a way to survive," Damien said seriously.
