The Sweetest Temptation
Chapter 103: Dead

Chapter 103: Dead

The heart was the strongest muscle in the human body. Yet why did it hurt the most?

The sight of Damien convulsing will forever haunt Rhys.

Watching Damien sleep in the hospital bed, with tubes attached to his body, was a sight he had been seeing for two months now , yet nothing could have prepared him for the immense amount of pain he felt seeing him convulsing today.

All his life Damien had been the one protecting him and now while his brother was hurting he couldn’t do anything to help him.

He couldn’t help but feel guilty.

Why?

Why was he the one who had to suffer?

He didn’t deserve it. He didn’t deserve the pain.

His brother might be evil to others but for him he was one of the lights in his life along with Beatrix.

All his life Damien had wanted nothing but to escape the harsh reality of his life.

His father had ruined his life just so he could take over his legacy. He had used him as a pawn in his life and never viewed Damien as a son.

No one hated the mafia life as much as Damien. He had planned to burn down everything once his father died and he took over.

But because of that night he had changed his mind. In order to protect him, Damien had trained harder every night and worked hard to take over the syndicate.

He had told them once he got rid of every threat to their lives and took revenge for him they would fake their death and run away to live a carefree life.

The only reason why he hadn’t done that yet was because the mastermind of all that happened that night was roaming free.

He was too powerful and his death would raise eyebrows, so Damien had been waiting for the perfect opportunity.

Every sacrifice he had made was for him, Rhys . Never once as he chosen himself. Now he was going through this.

Rhys had no idea how to ran a mafia syndicate. If not Xavier he wouldn’t even know what to do.

He just wanted revenge and he wouldn’t rest until he had gotten one.

His uncles and cousins have started asking questions and demanding to know where Damien was and why their business were suffering from attacks. Rumors of Damien’s death had started spreading too.

Xavier had cooked out some shitty story for them and even though they didn’t believe it, the questions had stopped.

All of them were snakes and was waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

There was no information about Damien in the hospital data base and they had ensured that no news will get out.

Rhys sat in the waiting room of the hospital, his leg bouncing up and down nervously as he waited for the doctor to come and brief them on Damien’s condition.

When Damien finally woke up, Rhys was overjoyed. But his joy was short-lived, as Damien began convulsing shortly after waking up.

Rhys was terrified, not knowing what was happening to his brother. He had begged the nurses to fetch the doctor, and now he waited anxiously for an explanation.

His mind raced with worst-case scenarios, and he couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the doctors arrived.

The doctors sat across from Beatrix and Rhys, their faces grave as they explained Damien’s condition.

"As you know, Damien was involved in a bomb blast attack," began the lead doctor, a middle-aged man with graying hair he was part of the special team brought by Ace.

The explosion caused significant trauma to his body, including a severe head injury that left him in a coma for several months. When he woke up, he began experiencing seizures."

Beatrix gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. "Why is he having seizures?" she asked, her voice shaking.

"The lack of oxygen to the brain during the coma caused significant damage," the doctor explained.

"Seizures are a common symptom of this type of brain injury. We’re doing our best to control them with medication, but unfortunately the damage is extensive and it’s difficult to predict the long-term effects."

Rhys’s face fell, his eyes filling with tears. "Is there anything we can do?" he asked, desperation creeping into his voice.

The doctor gave a sympathetic shake of his head. "I’m afraid the damage is too extensive to fully repair. We can try to manage the seizures with medication and therapy, but it’s important to prepare for the possibility that Damien may never fully recover."

Beatrix’s eyes filled with tears as she reached for Rhys’s hand, offering him comfort. "We’ll do everything we can for Damien," she said, her voice laced with determination. "Thank you, doctors, for everything you’re doing."

The doctors nodded in understanding. "We’ll continue to do everything we can for Damien," the lead doctor said.

"In the meantime, it’s important for you both to take care of yourselves as well. It’s a difficult and emotional time, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you need it."

Rhys nodded, still grappling with the weight of guilt on his shoulders. "I just wish I could have done more to prevent this," he said, his voice heavy with emotion.

The doctors exchanged a sympathetic look. "Accidents happen, Rhys," said the lead doctor. "It’s important to focus on the present and do everything we can to support Damien and help him recover."

Beatrix nodded, wiping away her tears. "We’ll do whatever it takes," she said, her voice firm.

The doctors stood to leave, promising to check in on Damien and keep them updated on his condition.

As they left the room, Beatrix and Rhys were left to face the reality of Damien’s situation.

It seemed that even if he recovered he might never be the same again.

*********

Matteo looked up at the pile of papers in front of him as his father entered his office

He could see he had lost a significant amount of weight ever since Beatrix left.

His eyes seemed dull as if the light in them as been extinguished.

He knew that he missed Beatrix more than anyone in the house.

She was his entire universe and now she was gone.

His father had resorted to busying himself with the mafia affairs even though he had retired.

"Beatrix will beat me when she sees you papa. She will say I’m not taking good care of you."

Matteo sighed and leaned back in his chair.

His father who suddenly look 10 years older sat across him.

"I know. I just miss her. Have you heard from her? It’s been over a month since we last spoken and even though she was trying to hide the sadness in her voice I heard it. Something is wrong with my baby girl."

Matteo frowned. "Yeah you’re right. She used to call at least every week and now it’s been almost two months since we last heard from her.

Also I have been receiving reports that the Russians had been attacking the Americans. It stopped though but it can’t just be a coincidence right?"

"Hmmm, I can’t reach her li-"

He began right as Remo showed up in the doorway, blood splattered all over the front of him.

His dad stopped and raised an eyebrow when he saw Remo’s state.

Everyone knew he was a psychopath and this was just a normal thing for him.

"Have something fun in the basement?" his father asked Remo, his attention temporarily diverted.

Remo lips curled into an evil smirk, "You bet papa. A very interesting thing. Wanna see? He brought us some good news."

"What good news?" Seeing how happy Remo looked Matteo was curious.

"Well it concern our brother-in-law. The bastard might have died.

Matteo exchanged a look with his father.

"What?"

Remo shrugged, "If you don’t believe me come and ask our guest."

The three of them walked over to the private elevator in the house and took it forty floors down to where their basement was set up for these kinds of things.

It was hidden from Beatrix and she had no idea that something like this was in the house.

They walked into the room where a man was bound and gagged. The room stunk of piss and burnt flesh, and they noted that the man was missing a hand.

Remo had cauterized the stump to keep it from bleeding out.

He walked over to the man and removed his gagged.

The man tried to speak but they realized that Remo had cut out his tongue.

He made incoherent noises but no words came out. His eyes bulging with fear.

"Oops my bad. I forgot he can’t speak now."

Matteo sighed, "Who is he?"

"That brother,is someone I kidnapped. He works for the Americans. Well I was worried for my baby sister and I couldn’t reach her so I had to take matters into my own hands."

Matteo nodded, "So what did you find?"

"There are rumors flying around that Damien Niarchos is dead."

"And you think that is a good news? Aren’t you worried about your sister too?" His father scolded.

Remo furrowed his brows. His hate for Damien had blinded him to ask the big question.

If Damien was really dead, what had happened to his baby sister.

"I think it’s time we pay the Americans a visit. Get in contact with Xavier. I want to speak to him."

Matteo nodded, "Alright."
