The Supreme Soldier in the City -
Chapter 19 - 19 19 Fireworks Scare
19: Chapter 19: Fireworks Scare 19: Chapter 19: Fireworks Scare Emily Lopez and Gina Lopez, the two sisters, were used to bickering with each other.
It had become second nature to them, and as soon as they parted ways, it would seem like nothing had happened.
Once the dumplings were wrapped, the five of them sat down together to watch the Spring Festival Gala.
James Brown hadn’t watched the Spring Gala in years.
He found the programs quite entertaining.
Plus, the atmosphere of sitting together with everyone, chatting and eating and drinking, made him utterly intoxicated with the feeling of home.
Over the past few years, he had taken part in one mission after another.
Whenever there was a break, he had to train hard to improve his skills, so he wouldn’t lose his life during a mission.
Therefore, watching the Spring Festival Gala, not to mention watching television, was considered quite a luxury.
Compared to those times, life now was much more relaxed and comfortable.
Even though his girlfriend was fake, and the aunt was fake, they were both great beauties.
Just being able to watch TV and chat with them was in itself a blissful thing.
Time flew by, and before they knew it, it was past ten o’clock in the evening.
During this time, James had also helped Gina’s parents wrap dumplings.
The twins, however, hadn’t lifted a finger.
Outside, the sound of firecrackers had begun and was becoming denser.
The television inside was so loud that the noise was barely discernible.
Gina frowned at the sound, but Emily ran to the window, watching the festivities outside and excitedly exclaiming in awe every now and then.
Although the sisters were twins, their personalities were quite different.
If one didn’t look at their faces, most people would assume Gina was several years older than Emily because Gina exhibited a maturity that seemed beyond her years, while Emily exuded more innocence.
“Brother-in-law, let’s go downstairs and set off fireworks,” Emily called out, without summoning anyone else, directly addressing James.
James readily agreed, and after changing their clothes, they headed to the doorway.
“Be careful and pay attention to safety,” Gina also came to the doorway, instructing them with concern.
Emily, unconcerned, replied, “I never had anyone to accompany me before, and now that I have a brother-in-law, what’s there to worry about?”
“It’s precisely because he’s as crazy as you that I’m worried,” Gina said.
By this time, Emily had already dragged James out of the house, leaving Gina with no choice but to shake her head in resignation.
Bringing James back as her pretend boyfriend seemed more like finding a playmate for Emily.
Gina hardly spent any time with James, whereas her sister had more interaction with him.
The two took the elevator to the underground parking garage and took some fireworks from the car before heading to the courtyard of their residential complex.
The property management was excellent and quite strict, so setting off firecrackers haphazardly wasn’t allowed; it was only permitted in the central plaza.
James carried two boxes of large fireworks, with Emily grasping other assorted small items, and they cheerfully made their way to the plaza.
Many people were already gathered around the plaza, and some men were setting off fireworks and crackers in the middle, while children played with smaller sparklers around them, creating a strong festive atmosphere.
Emily didn’t hurry to set off the large fireworks.
She instructed James to put them aside while she began lighting the smaller ones.
Emily’s laughter rang out joyously; she was a carefree, happy girl whose smile, illuminated by the fireworks, seemed even brighter than the sparkling lights.
With Emily, James let go completely and even felt as if he had returned to his carefree and youthful days of the past, playfully competing with Emily to set off the little fireworks.
Fireworks were being fired off in batches in the plaza, and it soon was their turn.
They placed the large fireworks in the middle of the plaza, lit them, and quickly ran off to watch the colorful display unfold in the sky together.
A dark shadow fell from the sky at high speed, trailing a faint trail of sparks.
Everyone on the plaza was engrossed in the fireworks exploding overhead, and no one noticed the shadow plummeting towards them.
The shadow was headed straight for James and Emily.
While others hadn’t noticed, James saw it immediately and realized it was an unexploded firework.
For some reason, the firework had failed to detonate in the air and was now falling, and the sparks it was still emitting suggested it might explode at any moment.
“Scatter!” James yelled, but no one nearby realized the danger descending from above; nobody reacted.
James was in a rush.
The firework grenade was spectacular as it burst open in the sky, but its explosive force was by no means small.
If it detonated near someone’s body, it could even be life-threatening.
At this moment, he couldn’t afford a moment’s hesitation.
With strength in his arms, he swiftly pushed away several people around him, then leapt forward, tackling Emily to the ground.
For others, he could only do so much, but for Emily, he had to ensure her absolute safety.
It was a judgment he had to make as a special forces soldier.
“Damn it, why are you pushing me?”
“Are you crazy?!”
“Wow!”
Those shoved aside by James cursed in dissatisfaction, and some children even fell and started to cry, but these sounds were instantly drowned out by a deafening blast.
The firework grenade exploded just above the ground, and luckily, the people who had been in that spot had been pushed away by James.
Emily was startled when James pushed her down.
She didn’t understand what he was up to, but at the very least, she knew he wouldn’t be taking advantage of her in this situation.
However, when she heard the explosion, Emily was so shaken that she nearly went deaf but quickly realized that James was protecting her.
After the explosion, everyone anxiously gathered around.
Fortunately, no one there was injured, just a bit stunned, which made everyone feel extremely lucky.
But for those who had been pushed down, they now knew someone had saved them.
Yet when they wanted to thank their savior, they couldn’t find James at all.
By this time, James had already pulled Emily back inside the building.
They didn’t take the elevator but stood in the passageway on the first floor.
Emily looked at James with gratitude and said, “Brother-in-law, thank you for saving me just now.”
James grinned and replied, “Why be so formal with me?
We’re family, aren’t we?”
Emily immediately smiled radiantly and said, “That’s right, no need for formalities then.
But brother-in-law, you were amazing.
If not for you, I would have been in a terrible state today.
I might have lost my life, along with those people around us.
Why did you drag me away so quickly?
You saved them; they should at least have been able to thank you.”
“It’s such a hassle with all that thanking.
By the way, we should probably keep the incident downstairs to ourselves when we go back.
Otherwise, uncle and auntie will worry, and your sister will definitely scold us.”
Emily immediately nodded vigorously and said, “Exactly, she would definitely say, ‘I told you, setting off fireworks is dangerous, but you wouldn’t listen.
Now see what’s happened.'” Emily imitated Gina’s tone so well that it was almost indistinguishable.
James laughed heartily and said, “That’s for sure.”
“I don’t want her to have the chance to say that.
But…
it seems like you have saved someone, you’ve been so heroic, maybe you should let my sister know; wouldn’t she treat you even better?”
Emily narrowed her eyes at James, and before he could reply, she giggled, “You two are just faking it, aren’t you?
You really don’t care about what she thinks, do you?”
James chuckled and said, “Actually, the most important thing for two people being together is the feeling.
These heroic acts and such could actually prevent us from truly seeing a person.
When I’m with your sister, I don’t want those things to affect us.”
“Is that so?” Emily looked at him skeptically, then leaned in closer, “Brother-in-law, I have a feeling you’re a man with a story, and it must be a fascinating one too.
You don’t want my sister to be affected by these influences, right?”
James was surprised.
Emily’s powers of observation were indeed very strong.
From his mere words, she had managed to infer so much.
No wonder she always sensed something off about him and Gina.
Convincing this sister of hers was indeed not going to be an easy task.
