Side Chapter Hood 1: Good Without the G

Everything had gone wrong, Oval thought.

Her short-range teleportation skill wasn’t well suited for combat. Teleporting near an explosion or energy attack disrupted the teleportation, injuring her–the only upside about the skill was that it was hard to track and cheap.

In this case, she directly took a portion of the attack before teleporting. Adding to the damage.

Oval was a proud member of Dominous Hood, and one of the few with the highest level of analysis skill. She recently reached level 210 after fifteen years of service, and finally reached her drop-off–the point where an individual finds it hard to level anymore.

This job was simple. Difficult, but simple.

But everything went to shit. Before even the biggest undefinable variable she had ever faced–Ceella appeared.

Ceella's soul page already looked different from the average one. An additional source of energy, a couple of skills she hadn’t heard but it was mostly in the realm of possibilities. Besides one skill [Primal Guardian Lord], it stood out like a saw thumb and didn’t seem like it belonged.

Then Ceella's status and appearance changed. And Oval felt as if she was facing a monster from an abandoned dungeon.

For a moment that cost her greatly–Oval was confused and afraid. Which caused her to end up in this state.

“Ah, fuck that hurts.” She grabbed her left burnt side. Dominous Hood armour, while good, wasn’t the best when dealing with heat.

Oval was one of the main officers currently stationed on Metous. Skilled at espionage, she kept up to date with all members on the planet, and those interacted with the Hood.

Based on the last name, she did wonder if Tyell leak the mission to her. But her lie detection skill didn’t pick anything up, and Ceella didn’t have a skill that could hide intentions and lies like Oval.

Injured and worried about the success of the mission. In her mind, they should’ve abandoned both missions once the first seal broke.

“It’s going wild!” These were the last words spoken before flame began spouting out of the mall’s floor. The only upside–which was that they planned for the possibility–and the damage happened in the area of the assassination target.

Multiple members of Dominous Hood started talking over each other.

“Argh, the PR team are going to have a nightmare.”

“All recording equipment has now been shut down.”

“Area C8 barrier successfully hijacked. Increasing its strength and locking out the access points.”

“Approximately thirty minutes before city forces break through.”

A commanding voice spoke over all of them, “Get this under control, fast!”

“Trying to!” There was a camera setup on the recovery crew showing a large disc with a handle attached to it. Fire was escaping through the holes in the disc before the feed was then shut down as part of the area-wide effect to prevent any recording equipment from working.

“Chaos is already happening on the surface,”

“Make sure no information gets to the hunters off planet!”

“Proceeding with objective A1 now.”

For a couple of moments, every one was silent trying to complete their objectives.

“Should be completed soon, he seems weaker than the reports suggested.”

Oval replied, “Of course, H-KV loves to overestimate in his reports.”

An old man replied, “Better than under.”

A message appeared to her, “I’m getting a signal. One of our men is down. I’ll be back.”

“Max Speed, Oval.” said the old man.

Her radio literally fried along with a section of her hood. So she needed to regroup fast once she recovered. Breathing in and out she stood up, planning to retreat to the rendezvous point.

Then a ball of fire dropped in front of her.

“Oh no.”

CRASHH!!

Eradicated within the flames she never got the chance to report her findings.

Later on, Tyell Stella returned to the bar where he worked. To collect his phone, find a quiet corner to breathe, and once he was comfortable, return home.

Luckily or unluckily enough, he made it through the terminals before the barrier closed over them.

Elly asked, “Job complete Ty?” Mikey was out for the moment, which made Tyell glad. Because he didn’t want to deal with him.

“Yeah…”

“Not seeming so hot.”

“Not sure if that was a joke or not, a bloody building is on fire.”

“I wasn’t, you don’t look good.”

“I know. Need a couple moments to rest, just getting my phone first.”

“Okay, just don’t look at the news then. It will make you feel worse if you feel responsible.”

“You think it's not my fault?”

“Correct. Accidents happen, you weren’t even the only one with the task of putting down the devices.”

Tyell didn’t question why she knew that, and just trusted her. It made him feel better.

“Okay, well I’m going to sit in the back room for five.”

“Good. Let me know if you need anything.”

He grabbed and opened up his phone. There were messages from a few people. Tella’s was the most recent but he had a few from Mella dating back some hours ago.

“Argh, hopefully, I didn’t worry them by not responding.”

He opened Tella’s first. His body shaking, quickly he swiped to his sisters. Reading each message. One. At. A. Time.

Tears uncontrollably escaped from his eyes, and he keeled over. Vomiting.

Every worthless justification he tried using to keep his mind together collapsed.

Drowned in his own sorrow, his own fuck-up–It’s my fault!!–his sister could be dead! And he just left the scene! The familiar echoing pain of losing a family member sang throughout his mind, but this time louder, harsher, blaming him.

“ARGH!”

“Tyell!” Elly ran into the room, “What’s wrong!”

“IT’S MY FAULT, MY FAULT.” He continued to scream.
