Chapter 40: Greed’s Game

[The capacity of this scenario has been fulfilled, with this, the scenario may begin.]

I looked around at the sea of people. Some were shaking to their core, while others comfortably stood their ground, their pride unhinged. ’Looks like Dusk and I weren’t the only stupid ones to challenge The Core with their pride.’ I laughed to myself.

[The rules are simple. You will group into teams of two and compete in many games against each other, and after every game, you will have to vote someone out. The last fifty people remaining will get the reward of this scenario.]

I heard many cheers fill the air in excitement. On the outside, this seemed like an easy game, you could argue the psychology inside it, but nothing that would make it hard. But truly, the system wasn’t done telling the rules. After all, every scenario has to have a minimum of one beast, and nothing was said about that fact, so it was clear that this wasn’t all.

[But as every good TV show... there is a twist! One of you here is a beast. And don’t panic, it isn’t able to harm you. Now to the good part, if, the beast is one of the fifty people at the end... you all die.]

If before people cheered at the words of the system, now they had remained speechless. Did they really believe this was going to be that easy? Also, you probably noticed that the system says something about a TV show, well, that is because every scenario is streamed and available to anyone.

Why? Im not sure myself, but since we’re talking about The Core, one possibility is that it’s trying to put fear inside the ones watching or, for some, motivating them to come to hell.

An evil tactic, but one that could definitely work.

[Now you may wonder why there are fifty winners. Well, there aren’t! Meanwhile, the last fifty complete the scenario, those who place higher will get an additional reward.]

A sword appeared out of nowhere as the system spoke. A pure black hilt that continued unstained to the scabbard, which was painted in the same symbols as before. The blade itself was made out of metal that held a blue reflection. It had a slight curve to it, making it more like a katana than a normal sword.

The guard was painted in a bright neon green, the same as the color on the letter from before.

[The person who is named the ruler of this scenario will be awarded this sword. However, keep in mind getting first place and being the ruler are not the same thing. More on this will be explained through the games.]

I get it now. How cruel but savage. Greed that’s the name of this scenario, and it fits perfectly. Let’s think about it this way, if there wasn’t any reward for those who placed higher on the ladder, would that change anything?

It does change, and a lot. If there wasn’t a difference between placements, people would be more focused on figuring out the beast and then voting its team out. But with a reward on the line, their greed would take over, making them try harder than win, competing with each other and voting competitors out, essentially falling into the system traps by not paying attention to the real threat.

[Now, if the beast teammate figures out that the beast is his comrade, he could try to keep it a secret or snitch. But keep in mind that you can’t intentionally lose. Oh, and yeah, I forgot to say, if the beast is in the last fifty, its companion will not die.]

To the naked eye, this was a simple rule to not make the game boring by the beast team ratting the beast out. But in reality, it was fuel for the greed of the people to burn.

If your teammate is the beast, your best option is to help them. After all, if they win, you’re the only one left standing, making you the ruler by default. Meaning you win by doing nothing. No one would pass on this, making the beast safer than ever.

I scoffed ’No one would lose intentionally either way, that rule is useless.’ I said while looking at the rules of the game again.

As I said before, there is a low chance for the beast to be betrayed and even more by intentionally losing a game since snitching is obviously the better option.

[Now, you may form teams of two. Good luck... you’ll need it.]

Chaos broke out, I fell to the ground due to the mass of people running to find a partner. Some chose their best friend while the strongest paired up, leaving the weak all alone. I also tried looking around for someone to call my partner. But no one wanted to come with me.

I cursed, as almost everyone had already found a teammate, leaving me and some others the only ones alone. But as I was trying to eye my perfect companion, I felt someone tap my shoulder.

It was a small girl.

"W-Would you like to p-paiw up with me?"

I looked at her with a surprised look, trying to figure out her true intentions, but I couldn’t sense anything. However, I’m sure that there was no way a small girl with pink hair like the gum in those old bubblegum commercials and blue eyes like a flying comet would be able to find a partner.

Were her powers so useless that she would be thrown out of the street? I’m sure there is someone here who would try being a hero and take her on his team, expecting her love in exchange. There are many delusional idiots in this world, so it was weird that she was alone. Too weird.

But at the same time, beggars can’t be choosers, right? I put my hand in my pocket, trying to act cool, and gave her my decision.

’Sure, but don’t drag me down.’ Was she really someone I could trust, well it wouldn’t be long until she could show me whether she could be trusted, or not.
