The Skeleton Magician’s Play Diary -
Vol. 1 - Ch. 6 - First Time Out
I was ready to go. Once I returned to the base, I logged out, had lunch, and quickly logged back in. I passed the time by reading research materials until the night came. And now, finally, I've arrived at the place that leads to the outside world beyond these sewers.
"Yip, hoo, hoo!"
I climbed upward, weaving my way through the rubble. Somehow I managed to climb up, struggling with the athletic movements. Then I sneakily checked the situation on the outside.
"Am I outside the city?"
I had expected the exit to be at the edge of Firth, the city of beginnings, but I was wrong. According to the map, it seemed to be a forest on the city's outskirts and there were rocky mountains in the middle of it. I guess there were no strange players who tried to enter through the gap in the rocky mountain. If there had been, I would have seen them in the sewers.
The sewers are a moderately good hunting ground as long as I can stand the smell and look out for the enemies in the dark. Although I don't have a nose, I can smell my surroundings.
But it's odd. This would mean that the sewers are connected to the outside of the city. It's hard to imagine that the sewers and the aboveground part of the city are not aligned in the first place, so there may be some shady secrets in the sewers. I think the south side of the city, where Ratmen camped, is suspicious, but I'll leave it at that for now.
'Oh, it smells like grass and trees...'
I had only smelled the sewer for about four days inside since I started this game. It made me sad to think about it... if it wasn't for the moving skeleton, I would have had a better environment.
It was the nighttime. The night sky was also beautiful outside. The full moon was large and pale, and there were countless stars scattered about, making me want to gaze up at it forever. But I can't say that because I have some explorations to do.
"Hoho, thanks to [night vision], I have no trouble seeing at all."
Even though there is moonlight, it would normally be pitch black, but I have night vision, which I acquired when I selected my race, so there is no problem. It's better than the sewers just because there is moonlight. Let's move forward slowly.
'I wonder if there's any prey..or predator.'
I kept on walking in search of a hunt.
'oh, there it is. Is that... a wolf?'
There were three of them in a pack. They don't seem to have noticed me. Let's take this opportunity to [appraise] them.
Race: Wolf Lv3
Occupation: None
Ability skill: [Fang].
[Claws]
[Smell sensitivity]
"You're weak."
It's much weaker than my first battle opponent, Lesser Ratman.
Oh, there's a reason the wolves don't notice the sewer smell on me when their ability skill is [Smell Sensitivity]. In the early days of immersive VR, a project implemented the smell of the character's body and the environment, and some players protested the specification fiercely.
The details of the protesters are unclear, but it seems that the protesters were mainly those people with body odour complexes. Human rights groups and others who took advantage of the protest made things bigger. There were also calls for the exclusion of VR devices becoming popular in society, but nonetheless, it was resolved when the project was cancelled.
Since then, body odour in VR has become something that can only be described as 'fragrant,' 'environmental odour,'. This is from a news site.
That's why I don't smell like a sewer, according to the game's specifications. If there was a smell from me, it would be that of dried-up bones. The wolves may have noticed my smell, but they decided that I was just a dead skeleton.
"Magic circle deployment. Darkwave"
"Gah! Gah! Gah!" The wolves roared.
I attacked from behind with Magic. The difference in level was huge, and I could take out the three wolf wolves at once.
Let's strip them down immediately.
Wolf's fur Quality: acceptable
Rarity: C Normal class
The skin of a wolf can be processed to make good clothing and winter gear.
Wolf's Fang Quality: Acceptable
Rarity: C Normal class
The fangs of a wolf. They are sharp enough to tear flesh but not strong enough to be used as weapons. Mostly popular as a material for accessories.
Experience-wise it's not very good, but the drop items seem useful. Would it be better for beginners to use skins for armour and fangs for weapons?
It seems that they have everything a beginner could want. Then they must have the medicinal herbs that I was looking for. Let's go a little further.
Yalu grass Quality: Acceptable
Rarity: C Normal class
Common medicinal herb. The least effective, therefore the cheapest.
It is ineffective and will only be of real value if it is formulated or alchemized.
Dollar Grass Quality: Acceptable
Rarity: C Normal Class
A poisonous plant that grows everywhere. The toxicity is low, but the fertility is high.
One of the ingredients for hunting poisons.
Mapi Grass Quality: Acceptable
Rarity: C Normal Class
A poisonous plant that grows everywhere. The toxicity is low, but the fertility is high.
One of the ingredients for hunting poisons.
It took about 20 minutes to proceed while appraising. This is the result of my efforts to collect while avoiding fighting the wolf wolves, which is just too much trouble. Now I can finally get my hands on some [Alchemy].
Yalu grass is an ingredient in so-called potions. I don't need it, but it can be used to gain experience in [Alchemy].
The other two are practically no use when used alone. But when these two poisonous plants are combined through [Alchemy], they become a moderately powerful paralyzing poison. I know this from "Alchemy Basics." The processing method was also well written, so I will try to make it later.
But still, I don't see any players. As for me, I'm hoping for the best. I wonder if they still avoid hunting at night. I'm sure it's dangerous without night vision for most players, even if they are skilled.
Hmm? I see something glowing. Is there someone there? Let's appraise it.
Race: Demon Fire Wisp Lv5
Occupation: None
Ability skill: [Physical Resistance].
[State Abnormalities Disabled]
I thought there might be people out there who chose to be a villain, and now finally, there is a demon. And it looks like some type of immortal undead. It looks completely like a human soul.
I was thrilled to see a creature like a human spirit floating in the pitch dark. It's a different kind of sthrill than the slug mass.
What's more, [Physical Resistance]? The vanguard will be in tears if they ever face it. It's also more lavish than Wolf. Maybe that's one of the reasons why it's so unpopular. So I came here. I'm going to try out some magic that I haven't used before.
"Magic circle activation, magic sword... phew!"
It's a magic sword. When activated, a transparent blade made of magic energy appears from the staff's tip, making it difficult for everyone except the magician to see.
I swung my Magic sword at the demon fire wisp, which was much slower than the Ratman. The blade of magic power cut through the demon fire wisp without any resistance and made it disappear just like that.
You have won the battle.
The [wand] level has been increased.
The [Magic Control] level has been increased.
The [No Magic] level has been increased.
The [Magic Circle] level has been increased.
You have learned the new twin Magic circle and remote deploy technique.
Oh, the ability skill level has been increased. And I'll have to check out the new skills in the [Magic circle] soon.
Twin Magic is a skill that allows me to deploy two magic spells simultaneously. The magical power will be consumed accordingly, but it is impressive that the instant power is purely doubled. It would be even better if [surprise attack] was there.
Remote deploy is a skill that allows me to deploy a magic circle anywhere within my line of sight. Until now, there was a limit to the range in which it could be deployed, but it seems that this has been removed. However, it is conditional. As the distance between the two increases, the magic power consumption increases at an accelerated rate. It is said that it can even fail.
The only way to balance the disadvantage is to increase the level of the ability skill. That's fine. I'm using it regularly to increase my power anyway, so it will naturally increase.
Also, the drop item for the demon fire wisp was a magic stone. It's not something I desperately need, so I'll just hunt for it a little bit.
"GRAAAAAAA!"
"What?"
Just when I was in a good mood, I heard the roar of a beast coming from deep in the forest. I braced myself, but it seemed that I had not been taken by surprise.
'What do I do? Should I go? Maybe I can make a good win as I did with the Rat Man vs. Big Slug. No, no, no, Let's not get greedy. I'll ruin yourself.'
'But I'm going to be here for a while. If there's such a horrible beast, I need to see what I am up against. If I can defeat it, I surely will. If it looks impossible, then I will simply run away. In case of emergency, I'll use my servant as a shield.'
Okay, let's see this beast.
I went to the place where the roar was coming from, there was a bear. No, let me correct that. That's a brown bear.
Race: Bear Brown Lv9
Occupation: None
Ability skill: [Fang].
[Claws]
[Monstrous force]
[Tracking]
The first impression I got from that beast was that it was huge. It's just like the ones I saw at the zoo when I was a kid.
He's now single-handedly devouring a beast that he thinks is a deer. Oh, why do I think that? Because he doesn't have a head, he can't judge!
'Was the yell I heard earlier a joy at the success of the hunt? Or was it the cry of the deer?'
What should I do now? My opponent is superior in terms of level. One physical attack, and I'll probably ascend to heaven and end up in the sewers.
But now that he is in the middle of his lunch, I can certainly take him by surprise. There is less chance I am going to miss it.
"Set traps, deploy twin magic circles... Dark Lance!"
"GAAA?"
The surprise attack succeeded! The two dark lances released by the twin magic circles that I immediately used pierced it simultaneously. It's huge damage that removes 80% of body strength.
"GRAAAAAAA!" The bear roared in pain.
The enraged bear brown bear charged straight at me. I was just standing there when I got hit by its paws and was thrown a distance away. It's only a beast, just as I expected. It does not have any consciousness.
Thankfully I did not die.
"GA...!"
"Stone Wall Stone Wall."
The Fire Lance, activated by stepping on the trap I had set, struck it directly below. The unexpected attack from below weakened the Brown Bear's momentum. It crashed into the Stone Wall with its weakened momentum.
The stone wall has also collapsed, but his movement has completely stopped, and he is unconscious from the impact of getting hit in his head.
"Water lance, wind lance, then magic shield!"
It looks like it had a magic shield over his head to ensure that he didn't fall. It must be restraining Magic.
But eventually, it fell weak.
"Dark Spear Dark Lance."
"Gaa..."
Finally, I hit him with one more Dark Lance, and the bear brown bear's strength bar was finally empty. It was my victory.
You have won the battle.

The [Trap Magic] level has been increased.
Okay, that's good. The Magic went up except for the [Granting Magic] and [Spell magic] that I didn't use.
' So, what's a martial art?'
Well, according to the manual... each weapon has its own set of techniques to use at best.
'And what's meditation?'
If you hold your wand and don't move, your Magic recovery rate will increase.
It seems useful both in and out of battle, isn't it great? Let's use it actively and strip it down.
Bear Fur Quality: Good
Rarity: R Rare
Raw bearskin. If processed, it would make a good winter coat or armour.
Bear Gallbladder Quality: Good
Rarity: R Rare
One of the internal organs of a bear. It has medicinal properties and is used to blend and alchemy.
Are there two drop items? Was it because he was bigger? Or was it a reward for beating a higher-ranked opponent? Whatever it is.
I have a use for the gallbladder. I found a recipe in the book that uses it, so I'll try it out as soon as I level up.
I was worried about what would happen at first. However, it turned out to be a delicious exploration, both items, and experience. Now, let's go home.
