The Scheming Ex-Husband's Courtship -
Chapter 191 - 181 Just One
Chapter 191: Chapter 181 Just One
Aus City’s skies rain all year round; a moment ago it was clear, but now it’s become overcast in an instant, and a downpour is imminent.
Gu Qili glanced at the oppressive sky, packed up the rejected can of food, and patted the pug’s head with a cautionary note: "Wait for me a little longer, I’m going to grab an umbrella, it’s about to rain."
The pug stared at her, its eyes unmoving.
Soon, the bustling woman had disappeared again.
Before long, she hurried back, carrying a black umbrella that Mu Shuoqian often used, with a custom-made LOGO on the handle.
The sky had just darkened when the raindrops started to pelt down, the bushes beside her hissed under the rain, and the parched ground soon became moist.
Gu Qili sat on the flower bed, propping up the umbrella with one hand, while the pug obediently squatted beside her, both gazing blankly at the rain curtain before them.
They waited for a very long time, until it was completely dark, yet still no one came to look for them.
"Could it be that your owner doesn’t want you anymore?" Gu Qili felt increasingly sorry for it; being ugly wasn’t a big deal, but being rejected for being ugly was.
The pug gave her a lazy glance and continued to stare blankly.
When it started to rain, Mu Shuoqian got up to close the study’s windows and noticed someone with a black umbrella walking briskly outside.
While running, she was holding something with her clothing, looking very anxious.
Gu Qili entered the door and cautiously glanced in the direction of the study, trying her best not to make a noise. She hadn’t even taken off her shoes when Mu Shuoqian already opened the door, his gaze burning upon her.
Gu Qili positioned the open umbrella in front of her, hiding her hands that were holding the pug, and tried to put on a casual smile: "Hungry? I’ll start cooking right away."
"What are you holding in your hands?" Mu Shuoqian spoke and had already leisurely walked over.
Gu Qili instinctively stepped back, and rainwater dripping from the umbrella quickly formed a small puddle on the floor.
"Nothing." She hid her hands behind her back under the cover of the umbrella.
"Woof woof~"
An untimely bark rang out, as if it was displeased with being hidden and was eager to assert its presence.
Gu Qili was so shocked she almost threw the dog out.
She knew Mu Shuoqian despised animals, and he also had severe mysophobia, so he would never allow her to keep a dog in the house.
As expected, Mu Shuoqian’s expression darkened, "A dog?"
Gu Qili could no longer hide it. She moved the umbrella aside, and as the pug faced Mu Shuoqian, challenging him, the man’s eyes changed unpredictably at the sight of it, but disgust dominated his expression.
"Throw it out."
"But it’s really pitiful, if I don’t bring it back, it would be drenched in the heavy rain."
"Are you close?" He lifted his perfectly shaped chin, "Did it save your life?"
"Mu Shuoqian, can’t you please be kind, just let it stay here for one night, tomorrow I’ll post a notice to help it find its owner." Facing his sarcasm, Gu Qili pleaded pitifully, holding up a finger firmly, "Really, just one night."
"No." His refined lips were tightly drawn, slightly inhuman, "Return it to wherever you found it."
Gu Qili knew that this stance meant there was absolutely no room for negotiation.
Disappointed, she lowered her head, holding the pug as she walked to the door; the rain outside continued to fall, and she raised her umbrella.
What to do? Should I really put it back outside? But with the rain pouring down so heavily, getting drenched all night could give it a cold. And without an owner to care for it, if it gets sick, it’s left to fend for itself, or worse, be taken by some unscrupulous person to a dog meat restaurant. Oh dear, it’s just too pitiable.
Gu Qili pondered pessimistically while she dragged her feet, her focus so lacking that she let the rain soak one side of her shirt through.
She had not yet left the yard when, suddenly, Mu Shuoqian’s voice came like redemption through the curtain of rain: "Just one night."
After speaking, he turned and went back to the study.
The surprise came so unexpected that Gu Qili almost jumped for joy, holding
The pug was naturally a very clean dog, practically odorless, and it carried itself with an aristocratic air, as if it came from nobility, its gaze upon people exceedingly haughty.
Gu Qili placed it on the bed and teased it for a while, but it just lazily stared at her, giving no response whatsoever, occasionally looking at her as if to say "Are you an idiot?"
"With your reserved swagger, you’ll never find a mate," Gu Qili tugged on its ears, "and with your looks, you’re no match in the beauty department, so you’ve got to compete with charm instead."
The pug was disdainful; mates who fancy pugs are a dime a dozen, after all, charm is something they’d feed to dogs.
"Woof." The previously lazy pug suddenly stood up, looking alertly towards the door.
Following its gaze, Gu Qili saw Mu Shuoqian standing at the door, hesitating to come in.
After a moment of staring between the man and the dog, he spoke coolly: "Come here."
Gu Qili immediately scampered over: "What’s up?"
He wasn’t particularly interested, but since she was so engrossed in her game and ignoring him, naturally, he felt snubbed; peering over for a while, he couldn’t help but curl his lips disdainfully: "Child’s play."
"It’s not easy, okay? I’m doing pretty well though, ranked top ten among my friends, but I’m way behind the first place. I suspect the top three are using cheats," Gu Qili huffed, "Their scores are just too far apart, it’s not scientific."
"Give it here," Mu Shuoqian suddenly extended his palm in front of her.
Since Gu Qili’s current game was over, she handed over her phone, eager to see what he would do: "Are you going to play for me?"
Without a word, Mu Shuoqian fiddled with it briefly, played a trial round, then inquired, "How many points does the first place have?"
"Over thirty million, and I’ve only got six hundred thousand."
"Got it." He started a new game, concentrating intensely as he played.
Gu Qili lay on top of him to watch, and though it was his first time playing, his fingers moved with the deftness of long practice. Most importantly, his reaction time was astounding. As the enemy fired a net-like barrage of bullets, he could spot the evasion path at a glance, whereas she always charged headlong, body against bullets – no wonder she kept losing health at an alarming rate.
Gu Qili had watched for so long, yet he hadn’t been hit by a single bullet, leading her to wonder if those bullets were blind.
Half an hour passed, then an hour...
Gu Qili had fallen asleep on top of him.
Mu Shuoqian lowered his head to look at the girl sleeping on his thighs, her skin still fair and clear despite having tanned a bit these days, translucent and possessing the natural radiance of a young girl.
.....The phone screen was filled with messages from WeChat friends.
"Qili, what cheat did you use to score over eighty million?"
"Qili, share the name of the cheat; is it free, or do you have to pay for it?"
"Using cheats isn’t fair play, we’re all about real finger skills."
The last message was from Mickey: Qiqi, it’s a matter of life and death, urgently need your help! **
