Chapter 87: No one can stop me from Marrying him!

"Morning, bride and groom," Emma said sweetly as soon as she entered without looking at the guests ahead. "Hope we’re not late for the wedding to get started ..."

Logan sat up straighter in tense. "Emma?"

Henry gave Jean a subtle nod briefly before his eyes landed on the two Kingsley women. "We’ve got everything ready..."

Emma beamed, her eyes locking on Jean. "The documents are with the lawyer. The board will be present by noon. All that’s left..." She lifted the garment bag. "Is for the bride to get dressed..." Her eyes finally met with Martha and Hannah Kingsley. "What the fuck..."

Silence fell.

Jean slowly stood up, still slightly groggy. Hannah looked from Emma to Henry to Jean, completely lost. "Wait... bride?"

Martha’s face paled. "Jean... what are they saying?"

Jean inhaled deeply. Then looked them in the eyes.

"I’m marrying Logan. Today."

The room went completely still after Jean’s announcement.

Martha and Hannah looked as if they’d just been hit by a train. Their expressions morphed from confusion to disbelief as they looked at Jean... who, despite her hangover, stood tall with resolve in her eyes.

Then Martha asked, her voice sharp with disbelief, "Jean, why are you demanding to marry so suddenly like this?"

Before Jean could say a word, Logan abruptly stepped in, his voice calm but deliberate. "Because we’re in love."

The silence exploded with a gasp... one loud, collective intake of air.

Hannah’s mouth fell open. "I knew it! I told you, Mom! I told you Logan was just putting up an act to hate her! You were so blind!"

Martha blinked slowly, her composure shaken. "Son... are you sure about this? Getting married so soon... weddings don’t just happen like this. They’re supposed to be a celebration of two families coming together."

Jean, sensing Martha’s disapproval might sway Logan, immediately stepped in. "No families will be involved. But... if you want to be a part of it, you’re welcome. We would need witnesses anyway..."

Logan turned to Jean sharply, reaching down and pulling her gently back to her seat. He squeezed her wrist and leaned in close. "Jean. We need to talk." He feared she would reveal everything to his mother.

Jean gave him a sharp look back... one that clearly said, What now?

Martha frowned, still processing. "I’m sorry, but you can’t just marry like that. Shouldn’t we at least prepare a proper wedding?"

That pushed Jean past her limit. She stood again, jaw tight. "I will marry him. No one can stop me from marrying him today."

Everyone sucked in a breath at that, the words carrying more power than even she intended. For a second, even Logan looked stunned.

Martha stared at her. Then, to everyone’s surprise... she broke into laughter. Warm, hearty laughter that echoed through the room.

"Oh, dear..." she said between giggles, wiping her eyes. "No one’s taking Logan away from you, Jean. And honestly? I’m glad it’s you over anyone else."

Jean blinked, completely caught off guard. "Wait... you’re not against it?"

Martha walked over and held her hands. "I was just surprised, that’s all. If you really want to marry him today, I won’t stop you. But later... later, I’m going to throw the grandest reception this city has seen. I have dreams, Jean. Dreams of showing off my daughter... in... law. I like bragging when it comes to my son’s choices."

Logan pinched the bridge of his nose and muttered, "Mom..." Instead I didn’t choose her, she chose me!

Martha waved him off. "Don’t ’mom’ me. I’ve waited too long for this day."

Hannah squealed and launched herself at Jean, hugging her tight. "Oh my God! I’m so happy for you two. Where’s the venue? I have to go live at the wedding!"

Jean stared in disbelief, still processing the rapid shift. Logan leaned close to her and whispered, "This is going to spiral... fast."

She smirked at him. "Well, it’s on... Mr fiance."

As soon as the door clicked shut behind Martha and Hannah, silence returned to the penthouse... though this time, it wasn’t comfortable.

Jean exhaled slowly and rubbed her temples. "God, my head is splitting."

Logan leaned against the kitchen counter, arms folded, watching her. "That’s what I said hours ago when you insisted on more beer."

Jean ignored the jab and walked to the fridge, opening it aimlessly. "Your mom... surprised me."

"She surprised me," Logan said, his voice more serious now. "She’s unpredictable, but not unreasonable."

Jean turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "You told them we’re in love."

Logan nodded slowly. "You wanted this marriage to happen today. My mother wouldn’t accept anything else."

She walked closer, arms crossed. "So you lied."

He met her gaze. "Yes. To protect the plan... and to protect you."

That made her pause.

"Jean, I know you’re doing this for your own reasons. Revenge. Power. Control. And I respect that," Logan said, stepping forward. "But from now on, we need to be a team... especially when everyone’s eyes are on us."

Jean narrowed her eyes slightly. "Are you asking me to pretend better?"

"I’m asking you not to act like you hate me in front of my family," he said plainly. "We’re supposed to be in love, remember? And they’re showing up at the registry office."

Jean sighed and dropped down onto the couch, legs crossed. "This is already more complicated than I imagined."

Logan approached slowly. "Then tell me... do you regret this?"

She looked up at him, really looked. Her lips parted, but no words came out right away. Then, in a softer voice than he expected, she said, "I don’t regret choosing you."

Logan froze. For the first time in a long while, he didn’t know what to say.

Jean quickly added, "But don’t read into it. You’re still annoying... and a manwhore."

He smirked, relaxing just a bit. "Good. Because if you got all sentimental, I’d have to check if you were still drunk."

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the faint smile that tugged at her lips.

Then he asked, more seriously this time, "Are you ready for this, Jean?"

Jean nodded, firm now. "Let’s get married."

Steam clouded the bathroom mirror as the sound of rushing water echoed off the marble tiles. Jean stood under the shower for a long time, letting the warmth cascade over her skin, trying to chase the numbness from her bones.

But nothing worked.

She had expected anxiety. Dread. Even guilt. But all she felt was silence... internal, deafening, and unmoving.

When she finally stepped out, Emma was waiting in the bedroom, gently laying a delicate ivory dress across the bed. The soft satin shimmered under the morning light, simple yet elegant, stitched to perfection.

"It’s beautiful," Emma said brightly. "The designer had it in one of his special collections . You’re going to look amazing."

Jean approached the dress and ran her fingers across the fabric. She could see how lovely it was, but it didn’t stir anything inside her.

No butterflies.

No excitement.

Not even fear.

Just... nothing.
