The Ruthless CEO's Revenge Wife
Chapter 135: Because You Matter

Chapter 135: Because You Matter

The hospital room was filled with an uneasy quiet silence, broken only by the beeping monitors and the soft shuffles of movement.

Logan stood near the foot of the bed, arms crossed over his chest, jaw clenched so tightly it could snap. Emma and Hannah sat close to Jean’s side, the silence weighing heavily on all three of them.

Logan’s voice broke through the stillness, rough and controlled, but barely.

"Tell me everything, Emma."

Emma’s brows pulled together, her voice cautious. "Everything...?"

"What happened today," he said, looking straight at her. "And before. Has her family always been like this? Were they always so... violent?"

He didn’t hide the tremor in his voice, didn’t bother to mask the raw fury simmering just beneath his calm. It wasn’t just about today anymore. It was about every bruise, every scar, every look in Jean’s eyes that spoke of quiet suffering.

Emma looked down at her lap, fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve. "I... I always knew something was off. Her family never treated her the way she deserved. But I was too young, too naive... and Alex... he always scared me. Today... it felt like he had no humanity left. Like something inside him snapped."

Logan’s fists tightened at his sides. I should’ve just broken that jaw of his.

"And her parents?" he asked sharply. "Are they the same? Or is it just the bastard brother?"

Emma hesitated.

"That’s not for me to say," she finally whispered. "That’s Jean’s story... not mine. You should hear it from her. When she’s ready."

Logan cursed under his breath and turned away from them, running a hand through his hair in frustration. He looked like a storm barely restrained... rage coiled so tightly in his chest, it was a wonder he hadn’t shattered something yet.

"She never tells me anything," he muttered. "She just... pushes me away. All the damn time."

His voice cracked slightly at the end.

Emma dropped her gaze, guilt swimming in her eyes.

Hannah, who had been sitting quietly beside her, reached out and gently clasped Emma’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"I’m going to the police," Logan said after a moment, voice low but resolute. "Her family... those monsters... won’t get away with this. Not anymore. She’s a Kingsley now. And I swear, I’ll ruin every last one of them if they ever try to touch her again."

But before he could pull out his phone, a voice cut through the room.

Weak. Raspy. Yet laced with pain so deep it silenced all of them in an instant.

"It’s useless... against them."

Logan’s head whipped around.

Jean.

She was awake. Lying in the hospital bed, her face pale and bruised, yet her eyes... those tired, guarded eyes... stared at him with haunting clarity.

Emma and Hannah rushed to her side, eyes wide with relief and concern.

"Oh my God, Jean!" Emma breathed out.

"You’re awake!" Hannah’s voice trembled.

But Logan didn’t move.

He stood there, frozen at the foot of the bed, his heart thudding so loud he could barely hear himself think. His eyes locked onto hers, unreadable.

Jean didn’t smile. Didn’t cry. She simply stared back at him, as if looking through him... into the fury and helplessness burning beneath his skin.

Her voice came again, barely above a whisper. "You don’t know what they’re capable of."

Logan didn’t say a word.

Didn’t storm forward.

Didn’t erupt the way he wanted to.

He just stood there... looking at the woman who had still managed to return with a voice steady enough to warn him. He had never hated anyone more than he hated the people who called themselves her family.

And he had never felt so powerless.

Jean’s gaze didn’t waver, not even as Emma gently cupped her face and whispered softly, "You’re safe now."

"I’ll get the nurse," Hannah said, blinking back tears. But before she turned, Jean caught her hand.

"Thank you," Jean murmured, her voice barely above a breath. "For calling him..."

Hannah gave her a shaky smile and nodded.

Emma looked between Jean and Logan... who still stood frozen, unreadable... as though sensing the quiet pull stretching between them.

"Come on," she said softly to Hannah. "Let’s give them a moment."

"But..."

Emma touched Hannah’s shoulder. "She needs this."

Without another word, the girls quietly exited the room, leaving only the beeping monitor and the unspoken silence between Jean and Logan.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Logan’s eyes were still locked on her, and Jean... though weak, aching, and barely stitched back together... held his gaze like she had nothing left to lose.

Finally, Logan moved.

He walked slowly toward her bedside, every step weighted with things unsaid. When he sat down, it wasn’t with the calculated grace of Logan Kingsley, CEO and public enigma.

It was as a man broken by helplessness.

"I thought I lost you," he whispered.

Jean’s lip trembled, but she looked away, staring at the ceiling. "But you didn’t."

"I know," he murmured. "And I don’t know if it’s the universe or just pure luck that you didn’t fall into the fire, but Jean... God, when Hannah called me... I’ve never felt fear like that."

His voice cracked.

She turned to him slowly, her expression unreadable, but her eyes glossed with unspilled emotion.

"You shouldn’t have to feel fear because of me," she whispered.

"I do," he said softly. "Because you matter."

Jean blinked, and the wall around her heart tightened, begging to hold just a little longer. "You don’t know what you’re saying."

"I know exactly what I’m saying," he said, leaning forward slightly, his eyes never leaving hers. "And I need you to stop acting like your pain is some inconvenience I should walk around."

Her throat bobbed.

"You don’t understand, Logan," she said hoarsely. "My family... they don’t just hurt. They destroy. They ruin everything they touch. I’ve tried to survive them my whole life. It’s not your burden."

He clenched his jaw. "Too bad. I already chose to carry it."

Her eyes flickered at that.

"I don’t need you to fight for me," she whispered. "I just... I need you to understand why I never let you in."

"I do understand," he said. "You’ve been fighting your whole damn life, and no one ever showed up. Not your father. Not your mother. Not your so-called brother. But I’m here now, Jean. And I’m not going anywhere."
