Chapter 134: Hannah’s Shock

Chapter 134: Hannah’s Shock

The machines beeped steadily beside her, a cruel lullaby that measured every second Jean stayed lost to him.

Logan hadn’t moved. Not even once.

He sat like a man carved from stone, one hand still holding hers, his thumb brushing softly over the tips of her fingers... again and again.

A ritual.

A silent prayer.

The only motion that kept him sane.

Doctors had reassured him she was stable. The burns weren’t life threatening. She would recover.

And now, all he could do was watch.

The girl who had once stood like fire itself, unshaken even in front of the world’s cruelest storms... now lay as still as the silence between two heartbeats.

And then... A twitch.

His breath hitched.

Her eyelashes fluttered. A delicate flicker. Then again. And slowly... those eyes he had memorized a hundred times... opened.

His heart nearly stopped.

"Jean..." he choked, rising halfway out of the chair. "Jean... can you hear me?"

Her eyes... still hazy and heavy... struggled to focus. She blinked slowly, the hospital lights too sharp. Her lips parted, dry and faintly chapped, as a weak sound escaped her throat.

"...Logan?"

His name, said like a whisper through cracked porcelain, sent a tremor straight through his heart.

"Yes. Yes, I’m here, I’m right here," he said, kneeling at her side, gently bringing her hand to his cheek. His other hand hovered close, afraid to touch the parts of her wrapped in gauze. "I’ve got you now. You’re safe."

Jean blinked again, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye. "He... he tried to... Hannah..."

"Shh," Logan hushed her quickly, voice soft but shaking. "Hannah’s okay. Emma’s okay. You’re the one who needs to rest."

But Jean’s eyes filled with more tears, a storm of emotion crashing behind them... pain, anger, shame.

"I couldn’t... I..." Her voice broke.

Logan cupped her cheek gently. "You don’t have to explain anything. Not now. Just breathe. You’re safe now, Jean. I promise you."

She closed her eyes again, this time not from unconsciousness... but from exhaustion, surrendering to his voice like it was the only thing anchoring her to this world.

And Logan...

He kissed her forehead gently, breathing her in like she was air after drowning.

In that moment, the fire in his chest was no longer just fury... it was a promise.

He would protect her.

From her family.

From the past.

From anyone who dared hurt her again.

She wasn’t alone anymore.

Not as long as he was alive.

He stayed at her side even as her breathing evened out, his hand still cradling hers. That small rise and fall of her chest was the only thing grounding him.

His body was in the room, but his mind was still trapped in that firelit chaos, the sound of Hannah’s scream echoing inside his skull like a nightmare on loop.

The door creaked open softly.

"Logan..." Emma’s voice was quiet, hesitant, but it pulled him from his thoughts.

He turned his head.

Emma stepped closer, her expression calm but her eyes betraying the storm inside. "I’ll stay with her now," she offered gently, "You should go check on Hannah."

He blinked at her, confused for a moment... until Emma’s next words hit him square in the chest.

"She hasn’t said a word since we got here. She’s just... have been staring. I think she’s in shock."

Logan straightened slowly, glancing down at Jean one last time. Her fingers were still wrapped in his... barely... but he pried them loose carefully, unwilling to let go but knowing someone else needed him too.

"Hannah..." he muttered, his voice low with guilt and worry.

Emma nodded, brushing Jean’s hair tenderly as she sat beside the bed. "She needs her brother right now."

Logan gave a final glance at Jean, brushing his thumb along her bandaged hand. "Stay with her," he said to Emma. "I’ll be back."

And then he stepped out of the room, the hospital lights colder now that he wasn’t beside Jean.

He walked down the corridor slowly, scanning each hallway.

Then he saw her.

At the far end of the east wing. Alone. Silent.

Hannah stood with her back to him, framed by the large glass window. The city beyond was bathed in dusk, its lights beginning to glow... but she didn’t seem to notice any of it.

She just stood there.

Still. Small. Sad.

His heart cracked.

His little sister... who once ran into his arms after every school recital, who filled their home with laughter and curiosity... now stood like a ghost. Her shoulders hunched, her arms wrapped around herself like a shield. She didn’t even flinch when he approached.

"Hannah..." his voice was low, careful.

She didn’t turn around.

He came beside her, keeping a gentle distance. "You okay?" he asked, already knowing the answer.

"I should’ve stopped him," she whispered, eyes glassy, fixed on something far beyond the window. "I froze, Logan... I saw him... I saw him push her. And I just stood there."

Logan closed his eyes, chest tightening.

He reached out, wrapping one strong arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. She let him. Her arms tightened around his waist, and her head dropped to his chest, just like she used to when they were kids.

"I’m sorry," she said, voice breaking.

"No," he whispered, stroking her hair. "Don’t you dare blame yourself. None of this was your fault."

"But if I had done something... if I had shouted earlier or pulled Jean away..."

"He would’ve still done it. That bastard didn’t care who was watching." Logan’s voice cracked on the last word, his jaw clenched so tight it hurt. "You’re safe. That’s what matters. And Jean... she’ll be okay."

Hannah sniffled, silent tears finally falling. "She asked me if I was okay. Even when she was the one who was hurt."

"She’s always been like that..." Logan murmured, holding her tighter. "Always thinking of others. Always carrying everything alone."

A long silence followed.

The sky outside darkened, but inside that quiet hallway, the siblings stood... relearning the comfort of each other’s presence.

"I’m sorry you had to see that," Logan whispered. "You didn’t deserve to go through something like this."

"Neither did she," Hannah whispered back.

Logan didn’t reply.

Because they both knew it was true.

And yet it happened anyway.
