Chapter 113: Operation- Dinner Date
Chapter 113: Operation- Dinner Date
"What would you do," Logan asked quietly, "if someone told you that our marriage is a sham?"
Jean froze.
The book slipped slightly in her lap. "Why? Did someone say something?"
He didn’t answer that. Just stared at her.
"I’d prove them wrong," she said eventually, her voice even. But inside, her mind raced.
Logan took a step closer. "How?"
Silence.
She looked away. Her fingers clutched the edge of the book too tightly.
"That’s what I thought," Logan said with a dry chuckle. He crossed his arms. "If we want to survive this... whatever this is... we need to convince them we’re real."
Jean’s gaze snapped back to his. "So what are you saying?"
He didn’t blink. "I’m saying... maybe we should give them what they want to see. No more awkward distance. No more cold glares. We act like a real couple. In love."
Jean’s pulse picked up, fluttering in her throat.
Loving each other?
She already knew what that would involve. Touching. Kissing. Maybe more.
She wasn’t ready.
Yet somehow, with Logan... her body no longer recoiled like it used to. He has never forced. He never crossed a line she didn’t permit.
But acting like they were in love? That meant pretending to want the very thing that once broke her.
Still, her lips parted, almost involuntarily.
"And what if they believe it?" she whispered.
Logan’s voice was soft, but firm. "Then we’re safe."
Her heart pounded as she nodded slowly, her eyes wary but accepting.
"Okay," she said. "Then let’s act."
But inside, neither of them realized just how blurry the line between pretending and feeling had already become.

The aroma of fresh coffee filled the air when Logan entered the dining area, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt. But what truly stopped him in his tracks wasn’t the breakfast spread... it was Jean, already seated at the table.
He blinked. "Good morning."
Jean looked up, her expression calm. "Good morning."
Logan almost did a double take. Was he still dreaming?
He took his seat across from her, and soon the staff began placing their usual breakfast items in front of them. He glanced at Jean again, quietly surprised to see her taking proper bites instead of just picking at her food like usual.
"Didn’t expect to see you up before me," Logan said, pouring himself some coffee. "And eating."
"I figured we should talk," she replied, meeting his eyes. "About what you said last night."
Logan raised a brow, intrigued. "I’m listening."
Jean lowered her fork. "Have you thought about how we can make our marriage look more real?"
A slow smirk tugged at Logan’s lips. "Actually, I have a plan."
Jean narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "What kind of plan?"
He leaned slightly forward, eyes glinting. "Public appearances. Like regular couples. Dinner dates. Movie nights. Maybe a charity gala or two. People need to see us... together."
Jean rolled her eyes. "That doesn’t sound very convincing. Anyone can pose for a few pictures."
Logan chuckled, gaze fixed on her, slowly intense. "True. But that’s where our acting comes in."
Jean’s breath hitched as he added, voice a shade deeper, "I’m confident in showing the world how I treat my woman. But maybe it’s time they see how Jean Adams treats her man."
She stared at him, caught off guard by his piercing look. For a second, she forgot to breathe.
He leaned back, relaxed, satisfied with her stunned silence. "It’s all on you now, Mrs. Kingsley."
Jean’s fork paused mid-air. "When do you plan to start this... public display?"
Logan didn’t miss the edge in her voice. He leaned back in his chair, sipping his coffee with a deliberately smug look. "Tonight."
"Tonight?" she echoed, blinking.
He nodded. "Be ready by seven. I’m taking you out for a wine and dine night. Something... elegant."
Jean narrowed her eyes. "Where?"
Logan’s lips curled into a slow, confident smirk. "A place where the walls have ears... and those ears belong to the elite. By tomorrow morning, we’ll be the center of every gossip circle in the city."
She set her fork down, watching him carefully. "You sound way too excited about this."
"I am," he said without hesitation. "You’ll look stunning, I’ll look charming, and together? We’ll set the place on fire... figuratively, of course."
Jean leaned back, crossing her arms. "You really think all it takes is one fancy dinner?"
Logan met her gaze, voice dropping just enough to make her heart skip. "No. But it’s the start of a very convincing love story, isn’t it?"

Jean stood in front of her open wardrobe, arms crossed as she stared at the endless rows of elegant dresses. Her fingers brushed over silky fabrics, laces, and muted tones... yet none of them felt right. She wasn’t dressing for a date. Not really. This was just an act... wasn’t it?
Just then Emma called and Jean picked up. "What are you up to? I was thinking maybe we should go for drinks..."
Jean sighed. "Logan’s taking me out tonight. For show."
Emma curiously asked. "You mean that ’public couple’ thing?"
Jean nodded slowly. "He thinks we’ll make headlines if we’re seen together at one of those high... profile restaurants."
"He’s not wrong. But... are you okay with that?"
Jean didn’t answer right away. Her hands were frozen over a burgundy satin dress. Her chest was tight, not from anxiety... but from anticipation she refused to name.
"I’ll manage," she said finally.
Emma gave her a light chuckle. "Want help picking something killer?"
Jean hesitated, then nodded.
An hour later, Jean stood in front of the mirror, dressed in a form fitting, off shoulder black dress that kissed her curves and revealed just enough. Her hair was styled in soft waves, her makeup elegant but not loud. She barely recognized the woman in the mirror.
She took a breath. Her heart was racing.
Maybe it was the heels.
Maybe it was Logan.
The moment she walked downstairs, Logan... already waiting in a dark tailored suit... froze mid scroll on his phone. His eyes swept over her, slow and deliberate. And for the first time in a while, she saw no teasing in his gaze... only quiet awe.
Jean cleared her throat. "Ready?"
"You took my breath away. That should be illegal."
She rolled her eyes at him.
And just like that, the act began.
Or at least, that’s what she kept telling herself.
