Chapter 97

"Calicia Wymers." Melisca mumbled the name. It felt strange in her tongue. And it irked her how familiar she was in it. "Who’s this Calicia Wymers?" She didn’t mean to sound aggressive, but she wasn’t comfortable just hearing it. Even Ezekiel knew her, and everyone was looking for her.

"Calicia Wymers is a hybrid human and wolf." Vera answered. "Josh, please pass the file to me."

Josh, who was sitting at the end of the table beside the other committee member, slid the folder on the table and pushed it in the doctor’s direction. It stopped by her hand.

There’s another hybrid like me? This Calicia? She blinked at that new information. So, they weren’t just focused on her but on this other person too. That’s a great distraction, then. And all this time, she thought that they were all just after her. Or maybe they had given up on her finally and decided to just focus on this other one? It’s too early to celebrate, though.

"What’s so important about this hybrid?" This could be the perfect opportunity for her long-time questions to be answered. And they would be from the direct source.

"She’s different from all." Joana answered. She was sitting on the other side of Tyla.

"Different?" Wallace snorted. "She’s entirely a new undiscovered species."

Specie? This Calicia and me weren’t just species. It’s degrading to hear that they thought of them like that.

"You don’t have to know the reason for this mission." Vera stated.

"Then count me out." She bravely said as she stood up. "Why would I do a mission that I don’t even know the reason for?" Her gaze was directed to Vera.

Everyone on the table looked at her with surprise and with different reactions. Some with incredulous expressions and insults of how she talked back with the committee. Tyla was amused though.

"When you were back in your hunting job, Liz, is that how you also did your mission? To know the reason for hunting the criminals?" Vera asked with a grim expression on her face.

"Yes." Not exactly. It was up to her if she wanted to know. But this time, she does. Before, she didn’t care as long as the pay was huge. Now, she doesn’t care about any payment. She wanted reasons. Valid reasons.

Vera was about to answer her again, but Giordano gestured for her to stop talking, and he slightly tilted his head up to Melisca. "Please sit down, Ms. Lorwey."

The general calmly said. Melisca really wanted to take off his mask to see what he was hiding behind it. And most of all, to read his expressions. Her fists clenched in trying to stop herself from doing so.

"Why are you called general?" She asked in squinting eyes.

"Now, Melisca, that’s rude to ask him that dire—" Vera was cut off again by another hand gesture from him.

"It’s fine, Vera."

"Please, Ms. Lorwey. I don’t like to repeat myself." He sounded calm, but he was losing patience in his restrained voice.

"Me too." Melisca seconded and took her seat again.

"I’m a retired general." He answered after a few seconds. "And for your other question about the hybrid. We were looking for her just as they said earlier. She’s a rare half supernatural and half human."

"Was she the only one? And what’s so special about being a hybrid?"

"As far as we know, yes." General Giordano confirmed.

Melisca’s forehead knotted, but she kept on listening. "She’s a rare occurrence because supernatural beings couldn’t procreate with humans. But she was an exception, which made her extra special and untouched. We would like to know her more closely."

"You want to experiment on her? Not kill her?"

"Yes, Ms. Lorwey. And trust me, we could all benefit from it."

"What benefit?"

"We don’t know for sure yet, but we’ll find out once we capture her." Another committee member answered.

Melisca was left with a lot of questions again. She withdrew her gaze from the general and looked at the table in front of her, blinking in a daze from all the information she heard so far.

"Is your decision final, grandpa?"

She heard Vera’s voice. Her mind was still processing everything.

"Yes. I’d put her on the HC team." Giordano announced. "Give her the file now."

Vera was hesitant in his decision, but he was the head, and he had the final say. She slid the file in her hand across the table. Melisca reached for it, and she was about to open the file.

A hand closed the folder. She looked up, and it was Tyla. "Read it later." The woman said with a small smile. She complied then and put her hands on top of the document.

"That’s confidential information, Liz. Even Loriena doesn’t know it. And the HC team was an exclusive group. They’re like special forces. So don’t go around and tell anyone that you are part of them. One of their members is here." She looked at the end of the table. "It’s Josh over there."

Josh nodded at Melisca and grinned at her. "Welcome to the team, Lorwey." He stated.

She doesn’t know what to say to that. She just nodded since she couldn’t trust her mouth to say anything respectful.

"You’ll meet the rest of the team later or tomorrow. Josh will call for you when everyone is here already." Vera informed her. "So, now—"

"—Now, can I take her for the tour?" Tyla interrupted her. "It’s part of her privilege as a member of the special team. And after that, I’ll do her tattoo."

Vera was glaring at the white-haired woman.

"Go ahead, Tyla." Giordano agreed for her. "Vera still had her batch to do the truth drug test."

The doctor wanted to oppose but the general already made his words. Tyla smiled at her sweetly which Vera wanted to wipe off her face.

"Now, the meeting’s adjourned." General Giordano tapped his cane on the floor twice and everyone nodded.

Tyla instantly stood up and patted Melisca’s shoulder. "Come on, Melisca. I’m excited to show you around." She was trying not to be too excited for the girl but she is, after all, everything was working quite well.

Melisca pulled herself from the table and grabbed the folder. Some of the committee wanted to talk to her some more but Tyla dragged her out the door hurriedly and she was thankful for that.

When they were out already, Melisca was still in a daze. Her mind was bombarded with anger, confusion, and worry.

Anger after knowing that her great grandfather was behind all this. Confusion about Calicia Wymers. And last but never the less, worry about the tattoo that Tyla mentioned. She was sure that it was the same tattoo that Lorna had, also her mother. Tattoo ink never stays in her skin. It would be gone in just a few minutes. How would she be able to work it out then?
