Chapter 87
Calixta’s eyes widen when those words go past Ezekiel’s lips. The room instantly went fiery hot in an instant. Her seductive gaze earlier turned into a searing stare.
Zek wondered if he wasn’t immune to her. He might already have fire ignited on his head out of the blue.
"How did you freaking know about my lost sister?"
"I had my resources, Calixta. Magic can’t do everything." He knew he got her. "Would you take the deal? I don’t have much time. I might as well start searching for your sister." He raised a brow at her.
"You better succeed in what you offer, Ezekiel Rawson."
He knew she did it on purpose. Mentioning her lineage to the Blood Court. But he won’t react to that. It’s the least of his concerns.
"The same as your confidence to make it, Calixta." He stood up and snatched one of the syringes and put it on the extra box inside the briefcase. It’s better to keep one in case everything gets wasted.
He closed the case and looked at her face again. She got on her feet as well so that she wouldn’t have to tilt her head that high to look at his face.
"I’ll be in touch. Tell me whatever you need in the process." He tugged on his necktie and turned around to head straight to the door.
"Wait." Calixta called when he was already gripping the doorknob. "Give me his number."
"No." In a blink, Ezekiel was gone in her view.
"Well, at least I tried." She mumbled on herself and turned back around to get the case on the table.
***********
Few days had passed. Melisca finished her lectures about the supernatural beings and stuff. She had even shown her archery skills and marksmanship more to the others as they had simulation battles in a group. And at some point in the day, she taught Lorna fighting and guns. But the girl still had a long way to even fire a gun without hesitating and closing her eyes to make sure she aimed at the target.
She was still on the wild card for fighting in the cage. And for today. She would learn about the successful creations of the hunter’s scientists. They were at a chemistry lab. She was with the other senior students. Some guys wanted to hook up with her, but she outright rejected them and anyone who would dare to.
They were in the context of discussing Anti-superno and how to use them in different ways.
"You learn guns and archery, for we have customized them into making the bullets instead of gunpowder and arrows that would be tainted with poison." The teacher stated.
Melisca was tapping her pen in on the paper. They were given it to them to take extra notes. She had already known about the Anti-superno and ABD, which they don’t know that she had known of before she entered the camp.
Another hour passed, and a new one was to them. "This other chemical substance here is a Booster." Teacher Hanna raised the syringe and projected it in the front for everybody to see. It had a reddish color in it. "This one can boost your strength to be able to fight supernatural beings in their natural state. You could be on par with them. But it would only work in a few hours. The effects would be gone, and your system would deflate for an hour or so. And the biggest but of this is that not everyone can use them. It was only compatible with some soldiers and hunters. Though the study of why is that was still on going."
One of the seniors raised his hand. "Are you building super soldiers with that?"
That made Melisca glance in his direction. That was a smart question, honestly. With the booster, humans can be stronger. And if it was used in military combat, it would be a great help to conquer a country. It had a lot of potential. Diabolical potential. If humans haven’t turned into the worst yet.
The instructor was silent for almost a minute. Obviously, contemplating how to answer that. Or maybe how to hide the fact that the trainee might have hit the pot by his question.
"Super hunters, Quinn. Not super soldiers. Our targets are the supernatural races, not humans like us." She finally answered.
Melisca wanted to laugh at that, but she snorted quietly instead. She was part human, and especially her mother was a pure human, and yet they came at them. Such hypocrisy.
She can only shake her head in its audacity."Is something funny, Ms. Lorwey?" Hanna asked as he fixed the glasses to her face.
Everyone glanced at her. She was in the back row, and why do they always call her out in her every reaction? They were obviously paying extra attention to her.
"Nothing, Ms. Hanna." She coldly answered, giving her a bored look.
The woman huffed and proceeded with the lecture.
Hours passed. They tackled more about the cons and pros of using the chemicals that were introduced.
In the late afternoon. The lecture finally ended, and she met with Lorna in the hallway. They were both still in their training uniforms.
"How’s the class?" Lorna asked first.
"Interesting." She answered as she walked by the vending machine to get herself a drink. Lorna followed her. "Yours?"
Lorna grunted and touched her shoulders as she stretched her neck. "It’s torture."
She bought two drinks and handed Lorna a lime juice. The sour flavor is the same as hers. The girl was hesitant but took it anyway. She knew that Lorna liked the strawberry one. But she doesn’t want to add more sugar to the girl’s system. Does it look like she cares? Well, at least Lorna wouldn’t know.
"Thanks." She mumbled and they cracked open the lid. Lorna’s face instantly contorted.
"You’re overacting. It’s not that sour." Melisca commented and sipped hers. There was a sweet aftertaste left her in tongue.
"I’m just not used to this." Lorna mumbled.
She just grunted as a reply and walked to the reception desk to get a handful of candies from the jar. Unlike Lorna, she doesn’t have to worry about getting diabetes. Lucky her.
"What are your plans tomorrow?" Lorna asked when she get back to her side.
"Nothing. There wasn’t much to do in here, anyway." She shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe I’ll just hit the gym."
Lorna scowled at the mention of another muscle activity. "Don’t you get tired?"
"I’m used to it. It’s better than staying at the dorm and daydream." She doesn’t want to stare into space that could make her reminisce things from the past. And there was no other entertainment underground.
"Don’t you want to join the games in the arena?" The girl’s face contorted slightly after sipping her drink. It looked like the test was getting tolerable for her.
"What games?" She gulped half of her drink. They were sitting at one of the lounge seats near the wall.
"Just anything that anyone would like to play. Or you can just watch them. It’s what some does during Sundays. If not staying in their rooms."
"I see." She thought about it for a moment. "No. I’d rather hit the gym." She thought that there could only be few people doing extra practices in the gym since it had been a muscle training all week. But her body was different. She craves for activities rather than staying still. Though, there are times that she stays with her bed, and that happens rarely.
She just wanted to stay active mostly to distract herself from the vengeful memories somehow.
"How about you?"
Lorna had a wicked smile on her lips and Melisca got an inkling of what Lorna was thinking.
She moved closer to her and whispered. "You can escape with me and have fun above ground."
And Melisca got it right. The idea wasn’t bad at all. She wanted to get fresh air for how many days already. She felt like getting sick by continuing to breathe in the closed walls underground. It was kind of suffocating. "What fun?" She casually asked.
Lorna grinned. She knew Liz wouldn’t resist her mischievousness but her smile faded gradually as she can only thought of limited things they can do in the mansion’s vicinity.
"I can’t promise that we can get out of the mansion’s gate. But maybe we can just chill above."
Melisca emptied her drink. "It’s fine. As long as I can get out of here for a short while." She knew that Lorna had been restricted by her parents. The girl told her after their first day of training that she got her phone confiscated. And she had to make an effort in her training of her private sleeping quarters would be taken from her.
It would have been fine if she can get into the same dorm with Liz but there was no other vacant bed so she better stay in her room.
"That’s great then. There’s beautiful garden behind the mansion and maybe we can have a swim." She was already excited of having a Sunday activity with Liz.
Melisca thought of other things. Maybe she can find something in the mansion. It’s a great opportunity.
